What was your first job as a journalist?
I wrote an article about my grandpa for my elementary paper when I was 6.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes. I learned to type on a real typewriter! It was still a class when I was in high school.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
This is a broad term in 2018. I'd like to think it still encompasses earnest story tellers who are driven by facts.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
Give me highlights right away, preferably by email - deadline, rate, specs, expected tone if it's not obvious, contact info where available.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
Word, social media, the Google, experts in their fields...
Why did you become a journalist?
I am compelled to tell stories, especially centered on people I feel the world should know. I'm energized by serving as a conduit for this.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
No (we didn't have one), but I was the editor-in-chief of my college paper, The Echo, at Eastern Michigan University.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
This industry is constantly changing. Be adaptable and accessible, but content is king. Don't undervalue what you can offer.
What's your favorite drink?
A real margarita (one that involves lots of hand squeezing and running back to the store for a forgotten citrus fruit).
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
Ferrying my children around the Cincinnati metro area in pursuit of extracurriculars, running my Cub Scout pack, generally being non-glam.
