Why “neighborism” is having a moment
Vox Members got to read this story first. Support independent journalism and get exclusive access to stories like this by becoming a Vox Member today. For years, the internet sold us the idea that connection doesn't have to be local to be meaningful. Your people could live anywhere: in a Discord server, a group chat of far-flung friends, or a TikTok comment section. Geography was optional.
Tailoring a fresh start
For decades, Philadelphia’s historic Fabric Row was defined by bolts of fabric stacked floor to ceiling inside family-run textile shops. The stretch of South Fourth Street between Bainbridge and Catherine Streets, long associated with Jewish immigrant merchants and garment-making, built its identity on utility: a place people went to sew, mend, and make things themselves. But today, a different kind of fabric is stitching the neighborhood together. Vintage boutiques sit beside upholstery suppliers.

For years, the internet sold us the idea that connection doesn’t have to be local to be meaningful. Your people could live anywhere: in a Discord server, a group chat of far-flung friends, or a TikTok comment section. Geography was optional. Now, more people are turning toward the ones physically closest to them: the neighbor down the block, the parent from the playground, the person whose wifi shows up in your network list. It’s not just about wanting connection; folks are looking for support.
Pre-wedding weight loss now includes GLP-1s and bigger beauty pressure
For generations, wedding preparation has come with an unofficial beauty regimen: crash diets, intense workout plans, teeth whitening, spray tans, a last-minute facial. The months leading up to a wedding have long been framed as a period of transformation—a chance to look and feel like the “best version” of yourself before walking down the aisle. But today, that transformation is increasingly medicalised.

Hot Girl Wrestling is Philly’s new ‘Fight Club.’
Last December, a group of women and femmes filed quietly into a Kensington basement through a side door. Inside: a cleared-out basement, a few wrestling mats, folding chairs, and the unspoken understanding that something unusual was about to happen. This was Hot Girl Wrestling, Philadelphia’s unregulated, community-run fight club sustained by commitment and word-of-mouth. There are no referees and no waivers.
Why the Coolest Cologne You Can Wear Is One You Can Barely Smell At All
For decades, men’s fragrance has been synonymous with excess. A single spray of something nuclear—Dior Sauvage, Le Male, whatever was locked behind the glass at Sephora—was expected to project across rooms, linger in elevators, and announce its wearer before he even arrived. The joke that men wear too much cologne has become so culturally entrenched it’s practically shorthand: frat house clouds, oversprayed dates, the guy who smells like “cologne” instead of a person.
A homegrown and scrappy beauty boom is taking shape right here in Philadelphia
On a recent wintry evening at Queen Village’s Moon and Arrow, a group of 10 women poured essential oils into beakers, mixing them with carrier oils. They’d gathered for a workshop led by Tasha Gear, founder of local brand Linear Beauty, who instructed as they created a formula for body oils. The 10 women took a whiff of each other’s potions, commented on their notes, and took in the smells.

Why Wedding Camcorders Are Suddenly Everywhere
If wedding videography once meant cinematic drone shots, slow-motion vows, and swelling soundtracks, a growing number of couples are opting for something far more intimate: camcorders passed hand-to-hand among guests. Lo-fi, nostalgic, and intentionally imperfect, the format is fast becoming one of the most emotional—and unexpected—wedding trends right now.

Are You Worried About Having a Long Midface?
Video: evecatherine, jungkookstoastytoast, lindsiann Ren Yeung already knew she had a longer face — it was the realization that she had a long midface that surprised her. “I didn’t realize the section of your face matters, whether you have a long chin, long forehead, or long midface,” she says. That is, until TikToks about “facial harmony” crossed her feed. At first, the 28-year-old figured the trend was harmless, just another filter fad.
Why the "Keep Your Lower Bleph" Trend Is a Quiet Rebellion Against Perfection
A collage of five women all with under-eye bags and dark circles on their faces. A now-viral TikTok recently declared, “Ladies, keep your lower bleph.” The creator, speaking straight to camera, insists that puffy under-eyes—the kind that betray a night of bad sleep, crying, or existential dread—are the ultimate French-girl flex. The video, both cheeky and oddly profound, is quickly racking up views in the hundreds of thousands.
Is crafting in groups Philly's newest and most loved social activity?
Growing up in Berks County, Maddie Seidel spent her childhood crafting with her mom and siblings — finger painting one day, making friendship bracelets the next. After moving to South Philadelphia last year, she started scrapbooking and junk journaling with friends — and soon, an idea sparked. “I’d seen social clubs in other cities and thought, why not start one here?” said Seidel, 25.

Miu Miu Takes Back the Tradwife Apron at Paris Fashion Week
Fashion has always reflected the times, but Miuccia Prada has a particular gift for holding a mirror to the contradictions of womanhood. When she sent models down the runway in oversized aprons for her spring/summer 2026 Miu Miu collection, she captured something more complex than the ’50s housewife nostalgia currently enjoying a resurgence thanks to the internet’s “tradwives.” This collection wasn’t about homemaking; it was about the significance of constantly performing it.
Philly girls love horror and a film club is enabling their quest for the thrills and chills
When Christina Acevedo moved to Philadelphia from Los Angeles in 2022, she hoped to find community in horror movies and the city’s many cinemas. But whenever she went to a film screening, she found herself surrounded mostly by men. “It was actually a very isolating experience. But I knew there had to be other women who loved horror films as much as I did,” she said.
Belly's The Summer I Turned Pretty Makeup Is Going TikTok-Viral for Telling a Story on Its Own
By season 3, Belly is older, in college, and beginning to heal. The Summer I Turned Pretty's makeup artist Tara Sall told Popsugar, "We knew Belly was more mature now — this is a time jump — and we wanted to show her coming into her own style. She still has her little signature things she likes to do. She's not try-hard, but you can tell she's now putting in effort." Her look evolves into something sharper: defined brows, blush, and her now-viral soft cat-eye.
How ‘The Summer I Turned Pretty’ Made Chris Briney Into the Internet's “Black Cat Boyfriend”
Conrad Fisher isn’t just another YA love interest—he’s the emotional core of Jenny Han’s The Summer I Turned Pretty and the Amazon series it inspired. As the oldest Fisher sibling, he’s brooding, loyal, and weighed down by grief, trying to hold his family together while navigating first love and the looming loss of his mother. To fans, that mix of protectiveness and vulnerability makes him both infuriating and irresistible—a classic “black cat boyfriend” who’s impossible to forget.
Belly's Journey To Paris Is The Coming-Of-Age Trip Lauren Conrad Never Took
Paris has long lived in the American imagination as a place for reinvention, especially through love. The city has become a cultural shorthand for transformation in TV and pop culture. “This is, no doubt, true for Belly, who lives her life by the gospel of Audrey Hepburn films like Funny Face and Sabrina,” says The Summer I Turned Pretty fan and content creator Meghan Witthaus.
Why Every Woman You Know Is Obsessed With 'The Summer I Turned Pretty'
Courtney Gilberto, a 39-year-old mum who once played 'tie-dye girl' in the 1998 Parent Trap, watches The Summer I Turned Pretty with her 10-year-old daughter. 'It reminds me of young love — being wanted by multiple boys and feeling everything for the first time,' she says. It’s no wonder women like Gilberto are hooked to the series: Some read Jenny Han’s books as teens, while others found them later in life and never looked back. At 36, I’m also a proud TSITP fan.
How hair salons are adapting to the needs of people with trauma
When Rufus* settled into the salon chair for a recent haircut, he did something new. He told the stylist about the anxiety that usually shadows these moments. “I just said, ‘Hey, I’m kind of a weirdo when it comes to haircuts,’” he remembers. Instead of brushing it off, she leaned in, asking gently what exactly made him uneasy. Was it the cape around his neck? The feeling of being trapped in the chair? The loss of control? Simply naming these fears helped ground him.
Want an old mine cut ring like Taylor Swift’s? Philly’s your best bet
When Taylor Swift’s new engagement ring — a glittering old, mine cut diamond estimated at eight carats — was revealed last week, it reignited public fascination with a centuries-old style of diamond cutting. Long before modern technology brought flawless symmetry and machine precision to diamonds, old mine cuts were crafted by hand, shaped to catch light from a flickering flame.

"The Summer I Turned Pretty" Reminds Us That Young Womanhood Is Meant to Be Messy

The Summer I Turned Codependent: Belly, Jeremiah, And The Messy Truth About Their Love Story
If you spent this summer spiraling with The Summer I Turned Pretty, chances are you had strong feelings about Belly’s choice between Conrad and Jeremiah. While the fandom was busy fighting over ships, season three gave us something more complicated: a front-row seat to how Belly and Jeremiah’s love story quietly slipped into codependency.

Is the Morning Shed Trend Safe for Sensitive Skin?
Have you done the morning shed? The buzzy phrase refers to a viral TikTok trend in which people apply an array of skincare and self-care products—such as face serums, eye patches, mouth tape, and heatless curlers—before bed, then “shed” them off in the morning to reveal refreshed skin and styled hair, explains dermatologist Joshua Zeichner, M.D., an associate professor of dermatology and the director of cosmetic and clinical research in dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City.
Your Wallet Holds More Power Than You Think
A new wave of financial activism is taking on the banks, corporations, and institutions funding the climate crisis. On the last Friday in February, Americans didn’t just protest—they withheld their dollars. Organized by newly formed grassroots organization The People’s Union USA, the “economic blackout” urged United States citizens to buy nothing for 24 hours: no gas or fast food, no online or in-store purchases from retail giants, and no use of debit or credit cards.

Beauty Adhd Getty | Kinga KrzeminskaGetty | Kinga Krzeminska A fear of being alone triggered my new habit. It was almost the holidays, and another good friend — one of the few left unmarried — became engaged. Immediately, the fear I'd had since childhood of being alone (autophobia) washed over me all over again. Thought spirals took over, denying my ability to be fully happy for my friend who had, despite all odds (i.e., the sh*t hole that is dating apps), found her person.

When Skincare Advocates Hit Empty
In the world of skincare, nothing speaks louder than an empty bottle. The ‘empties’ trend—where skincare connoisseurs share the products they’ve used to the last drop—has taken over Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube (just search #empties to see for yourself). More than just a social media flex, empties are a powerful indicator of what truly works. When someone finishes a product, it usually means they loved it enough to use it consistently.

Dermorexia: Is our obsession with skincare becoming a disorder?
While interviewing young women for her book Pixel Flesh, author Ellen Atlanta began to notice that many of them were displaying signs of an obsessive fixation with their skincare. She met women who timed the application of their products to the millisecond, who wouldn’t go outside during sunlight hours, who taped up their parents’ car windows to avoid UV rays. These young women would become distressed by the idea of not having access to their skincare regimen.
