The ongoing border crisis in America poses significant national security concerns, including the potential for domestic terrorism. Since fiscal year 2021, there have been 9.2 million encounters nationwide, with 7.6 million being at the Southwest border. In June, ISIS-affiliated smuggling networks successfully smuggled more than 400 migrants across the southern border. And while more than 150 of them have been arrested by ICE, the whereabouts of more than 50 remain unknown.
Since Oct. 17, Iranian proxies have targeted U.S. troops in Iraq, Syria, and Jordan over 160 times. On Jan. 28, three U.S. soldiers were killed, and more than 30 other service members were injured following a done attack conducted by an Iranian-backed militia. In response, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) forces launched a targeted airstrike in Baghdad, killing a senior leader of Iranian-backed Kataib Hezbollah.
As the Middle East is again consumed by wars of terrorist aggression, Africa, too, is experiencing a rise in violence. Despite the region receiving billions in U.S. foreign aid annually, groups affiliated with Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State have gained ground throughout the continent. As of 2023, the Sahel region—a broad sub-Saharan swathe of land stretching from the Atlantic to the Indian Oceans—represents 43% of all global deaths caused by terrorism.
