What was your first job as a journalist?
I was a TV listings production journalist with The Press Association in the UK.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes, though not in my journalism career - in my misspent youth, writing my first book. It was awful (the book, not the machine).
What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?
I've seen too many to pin down just one.
What's your favorite social network?
Bluesky!
Who do you wish followed you?
Clive Barker.
Why did you become a journalist?
Because as much as I loved the creativity of decorating cakes, I always wanted to write. This was my shot.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
No, I fell into journalism after working for eight years in a fruit cake factory. I replied to an advert in the local paper.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
Shedding light on the incredible work of Food Behind Bars for Reader's Digest. It was so inspiring.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Do your research, especially when pitching features, but don't be afraid to ask editors for advice on what they're looking for.
What's your favorite drink?
Ooo, I love a nice cup of Earl Grey, or an IPA beer, but I'm developing a taste for very dry white wine.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
In the garden, not to kill the fruits and veggies in our tiny potager, walking our dogs, or curled up with a good book.
