What was your first job as a journalist?
Working as a freelance online news producer for The Denver Post. I did several other things while freelancing, but finally got on full time.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
I have, in fact. My first typing class used IBM Selectrics, and before that I typed short stories on my dad's old Smith-Corona "portable."
How is social media changing news?
It's rewriting many of the rules. As time goes on it becomes more than part of your reporting and simply becomes your reporting. I like this.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Ford Prefect. 5 years working on a story revision and he managed to double its length... by adding one word.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
To find answers to the questions on everyone's mind, and questions that aren't on their mind but will be once they know there are answers.
What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?
may be cliche, but it sure is fun to watch. was funny once, but less common lately.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
I prefer not to be pitched, generally speaking. It's infrequent that I write stories myself. If you must, send me a tweet.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
Facebook, Twitter, G+, Tumblr, Wordpress, PHP, JavaScript, jQuery, iPhone 4, Canon digital camera, Nikon, Yashica and Graflex film cameras.
What's your favorite social network?
It's a tie between Twitter and Tumblr in my head; in real life, Twitter wins. I love Tumblr but don't spend the time on it that I do Twitter.
Who do you wish followed you?
Henri Cartie-Bresson or Alfred Stieglitz. Seriously, though, most of the people whose advice and opinions mean most to me already follow me.
Why did you become a journalist?
It combines things I'm good at with things I enjoy, and gives me a great sense of purpose. Basically... I love every minute of it.
What's your favorite drink?
Tie between coffee and beer...
