Mass Layoffs To Return With A Vengeance
Remember the mass layoffs of 2008-2009? The US economy shed millions of jobs quickly and relentlessly, as companies died and the rest fought for survival. Then the Fed and the US government flooded the banks and the corporate sector with bailouts and handouts.
Chinese Immigrant Turned Citizen Defies Obama Gun Grab: "I Will Never Be A Slave Again"
President Obama knows that the American people have not embraced his radical, leftist gun control agenda. That’s why he took to the stage at a town hall spectacle hosted by CNN’s Anderson Cooper in attempt to defend his unconstitutional executive actions for stealth gun control, and try to convince Americans once and for all that he is not enacting some kind of gun grabbing conspiracy.
Dear Mark Zandi... Please Explain This
If Mark Zandi and his "whatever it takes" seasonal-adjusters at ADP are to be believed, the US manufacturing sector added the most jobs in 11 months in December. Our question is simple - with ISM Manufacturing Employment at post-recession lows and US Manufacturing PMIs at post-recesssion lows, and inventories-to-sales ratios at post-recession highs, why are goods-producers hiring at such a frantic pace? Double-Seasonal-adjustment? Average: Your rating: None Average: 5 (2 votes)
Apple Tumbles To ETFlash Crash Levels, Saved (For Now) By Another Tim Cook Hail Mary Announcement
Apple's shares broke below $100 in pre-market trading as analyst downgrades and further component producer outlook reductions weighed heavily on the "no brainer." It appears increasingly likely that Tim Cook's "rescue" email to Cramer on August was perhaps not the entire truth.. and the market is trading back to levels it first crossed in August 2014 (i.e. unchanged in 16 months).
Another Bank Throws In The Towel: "After 6 Years Of Outperformance" Citi Cuts US Stocks To Underweight
Yesterday JPM, which despite calling for a 2,200 year end price target, paradoxically warned that the regime of "buying dips" is over, and that "we take the view that equities are unlikely to perform well on a 12-24 month horizon" adding that "the regime of buying the dips might be over and selling any rallies might be the new one." So don't buy dips yet somehow the S&P will rise 150 points? Fair enough.
The Fed Just Gave The Treasury A Record $19 Billion Holiday Bonus
Something surprising emerged in the latest Daily Treasury Statement report showing the sources and uses of operating cash of the US Treasury: the line item for Federal Reserve Earnings exploded to $19.3 billion on December 28, doubling the amount of cash the Fed had remitted to the Treasury for all of 2015.
Why Energy Investors Are Hoping Saudi Arabia And Iran's Oil Price Forecasts Are Dead Wrong
Yesterday, when Saudi Arabia revealed its "draconian" 2016 budget, boosting gasoline prices by 40%, while trimming welfare programs after forecasting a collapse in oil revenue (even while allocating the biggest part of government spending in next year’s budget to defense and security) Bloomberg reported that "the kingdom’s 2016 budget is probably based on crude prices of about $29 a barrel, according Riyadh-based Jadwa Investment Co." Shortly thereafter Iran's Petroleum Minister Bijan...
Buffett, Johnny Depp Snap Up "Cheap" Greek Islands
Update: And because any story that involves Greece (or originating from Newsweek) must be promptly denied in keeping with European headline hockey customs: On Monday, we brought you a day in the life of a Greek realtor. Courtesy of Bloomberg, we got a first-hand account of what it’s like in the Athens real estate market now that the Greek economy has collapsed. "For the last 15 days," the Athenian realtor featured in the video says, "the market has been really dead." That’s not surprising.
Are the Nazgûl Harmed by Water?
The Silmarillion states that all water is under the control of Ulmo, the second most powerful of the Valar: Ulmo is the Lord of Waters. He is alone. He dwells nowhere long, but moves as he will in all the deep waters about the Earth or under the Earth. He is next in might to Manwë, and before Valinor was made he was closest to him in friendship; ..
How far can a Hogwarts student persuade the Sorting Hat?
Several times, in the Harry Potter series, we are led to believe the sortee has some control over the House they are sorted into. Most famously, Harry Potter turns down his chance at being in Slytherin House, as suggested by the Sorting Hat to be in Gryffindor. Sorting Hat: Not Slytherin, eh? Are you sure? You could be great, you know. It's all here in your head. And Slytherin will help you on the way to greatness, there's no doubt about that. No? Harry: Please, please.
What happened to Winston Smith at the end of 1984?
While there's reference throughout "1984" that many people who confessed to supposed crimes and had become thorough believers in Big Brother were then literally executed, it's deliberately not made clear whether this was the fate of every one of them. Similarly, the ending of "1984" is far from making clear whether that's Winston's literal fate, at least during the last scene in the Chestnut Tree Cafe.
Why Can't R2-D2 Talk?
Anyone who has written software with any complexity knows the importance of logging clearly readable error messages to make debugging easier. Cryptic or short error messages like "Error #5" won't work. Part of an astromech's job is troubleshooting, which can often involve reporting errors or issues to a mechanic, which often could be a living being.
Are all myths superstitions, or are all superstitions myths?
"Superstition" is generally defined as -- to take thefreedictionary.com as a source here -- "An irrational belief that an object, action, or circumstance not logically related to a course of events influences its outcome." A superstition is a claim of some supposed fact or relationship, like "if you break a mirror you'll get seven years bad luck" or "if a robin flies in your window, death will follow". Definition 1 in most dictionaries is that it is a "story" about gods or heroes.
The Cold Equations - How could it happen?
For those who are unfamiliar with Godwin's 1954 short story (which is included in a number of anthologies, including the book The World Turned Upside Down found here in the 'Best of Jim Baen's Universe CD), I'll include the Wikipedia summary: The story takes place entirely aboard an Emergency Dispatch Ship (EDS) headed for the frontier planet Woden with a load of desperately needed medical supplies. The pilot, Barton, discovers a stowaway: an eighteen-year-old girl.
Do Timelords Need to Sleep?
The types of stories told in Doctor Who usually happen quickly, one event after another. For instance The Unicorn and the Wasp seems to happen in one afternoon running into the evening. These stories rarely show anything happening over days where the characters are asleep. Do Timelords sleep? Do they need to, or is it a choice? Is there anything that brings up whether they need sleep or how often they need to eat or just what their needs are to survive physically?
How Could a Bionic Man Lift Heavy Weights Without a Reinforced Back?
The Answer: He couldn't. Without a reinforced skeletal structure, his body should crumple or his limbs should be torn from their far less durable organic host. The televised series, The Six Million Dollar Man does not address this egregious error in both physical capabilities of a human body, nor in the capabilities of physical science considered possible in that era. The television series The Six Million Dollar Man was based on a book called Cyborg back in 1972.
