Tools exist to help struggling youth. Let's fund them
I f the General Assembly and Gov. Glenn Youngkin want to address increased crime rates in Virginia, it is imperative that they provide funding for the Delinquency Prevention and Youth Development Act, which is currently included in the budget approved by the state Senate, but not the House's budget. The DPYDA is a law originally passed by the Virginia state legislature in 1979 on the recommendation of a task force created to study delinquency prevention.
Make Your R Package Easier to Cite
Scientists rarely cite research software they use as part of a research project. As a consequence, the software and the time spent developing and maintaining it becomes an invisible scholarly contribution. Furthermore, this lack of visibility means that incentives to produce high quality, sustainable software are missing. Among many reasons why software is not cited, one is the lack of a clear citation information from package developers.
HTTP testing in R
⚠️ We are currently working on improvements of this book. Watch the GitHub repository or wait for a release announcement on rOpenSci blog. Once you get here you will have read about basic HTTP (testing) concepts in R, discovered four great packages in demos (vcr&webmockr, httptest, webfakes), and dived into more advanced topics like security. What’s next? Applying those tools in your package(s), of course! Pick one or several HTTP testing package(s) for your package.

Nicolas Fouquet and Château Vaux-le-Vicomte: The Danger of Eclipsing the Sun King
“In Xanadu did Kubla Khan A stately pleasure dome decree: Where Alph, the sacred river, ran Through caverns measureless to man Down to a sunless sea.” ~Samuel Taylor Coleridge “Vaux is the estate that I considered my primary seat, and it is there where I wanted to leave a mark of the status I had.” ~Nicolas Fouquet There are, of course, many great attractions to see in and around Paris, and many great country homes that stand tribute to France’s rich history.

On the Concept of a “Nonprofit”
Curious. Once again, we’re hearing complaints that an arts organization—today, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO)—is not supporting itself strictly on ticket sales, and therefore needs to come up with a new business plan. I hate to revisit this again… but I must. Let’s be clear: the BSO is not a commercial enterprise. It is not a for-profit business. The BSO is a 501 (c) (3) not-for profit organization, as recognized by the IRS.

The Minnesota State Fair’s Fine Arts Exhibition celebrates the art of the state
Each year, the Minnesota State Fair invites artists from around the state to submit work for consideration for the fair’s annual Fine Arts Exhibition. Participation is open to “all living residents of Minnesota,” so nix on sending work by talented dead relatives. Each artist may submit only one work.
Rose Ensemble's last season; 'Tapestry Violin: Musical dialogues' at Mia
Tickets are on sale now to the Rose Ensemble’s last season. If you’ve never seen them, if you haven’t seen them in a while or (obviously) if you’re a fan, now would be a good time to act. The closer we get to the final concert in June 2019, the scarcer the tickets will become.Founded in 1996 by Artistic Director Jordan Sramek, the Rose Ensemble is a remarkable group with a history of musical excellence and deep scholarship.
The Minnesota Orchestra's extraordinary experience in Soweto
Scott Chamberlain, a member of the Minnesota Chorale, just returned from the Minnesota Orchestra's tour of South Africa. The Minnesota Orchestra’s South Africa tour, in partnership with the Minnesota Chorale, boasted a rich and varied banquet of events that took place in a number of cities across the country.
SPCO hires principal clarinet; MnSpin expands
Fans of the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra are already familiar with Sang Yoon Kim. He performed with the orchestra as a guest musician for seven weeks in 2017-18. The South Korea native had his first taste of Minnesota even earlier, in 2013, as Young Artist in Residence with Classical MPR.Starting in September, we’ll see him more often.
Street photographer Wing Young Huie on his life, his work, and his new McKnight Distinguished Artist Award
Of all the Minnesotans chosen as McKnight Distinguished Artists since 1998, when the program began, Wing Young Huie is the first photographer. And he’s not who some people might think of when they consider photographers worthy of the state’s biggest arts prize since the Bush Artist Fellowships ended in 2010.
'Tour' is inadequate to explain what's happening between the Minnesota Orchestra and South African musicians
Scott Chamberlain, a member of the Minnesota Chorale, writes from South Africa while on tour with the Minnesota Orchestra. In all the marketing, press coverage, and local discussions, the Minnesota Orchestra’s and Minnesota Chorale’s excursion to South Africa has been called a “tour.” On the one hand, this is both logical and understandable — yes of course, the musicians are traveling to South Africa and performing concerts in South African cities. But in watching this grand event unfold, it is...
Preparing for South Africa: This is why we sing
It was one of those Moments … the kind of moments you are lucky to have every once in a rare while as a performing musician. Funny enough, it came not at a performance, but at a rehearsal. And really, it didn’t involve me at all; I was just there to witness someone else’s Musical Moment.

How rOpenSci uses Code Review to Promote Reproducible Science
This is cross-posted from the NumFOCUS blog. NumFOCUS is a nonprofit that supports and promotes world-class, innovative, open source scientific computing, including rOpenSci. At rOpenSci, we create and curate software to help scientists with the data life cycle. These tools access, download, manage, and archive scientific data in open, reproducible ways. Early on, we realized this could only be a community effort.
Clichés Abound in WSJ’s Analysis of the Met Opera
And I have officially had it. Yesterday Terry Teachout published a story in the Wall Street Journal that casts a long glance at the problems the Metropolitan Opera is currently facing. And I’m fairly confident my scream of frustration could be heard all the way in Manhattan. I don’t want to bash Mr. Teachout, whom I’ve never met. I don’t wish to disparage his writing, his obvious experience, or even knowledge of the arts.
Great News for the Met (and a Few Questions for Peter Gelb)
There is some very good news today about the Metropolitan Opera—the Met announced Wednesday that it closed its most recent fiscal year in the black, with a $1 million surplus and a balanced budget. This is a fantastic development, and I congratulate everyone who made it possible.
How to identify terminated Windows process if I still have its PID?
By default there are no such logs. However you can enable Process Tracking Events in the Windows Security Event Log. In Windows 2003/XP you get these events by simply enabling the Process Tracking audit policy. In Windows 7/2008+ you need to enable the Audit Process Creation and, optionally, the Audit Process Termination subcategories which you’ll find under Advanced Audit Policy Configuration in group policy objects.
Generate two different strings with same hashcode
This may seem a useless project. but i want to do some test which requires some strings with same Hashcode but not same strings. I couldn't find the example so I decided to write a simple program to do it for me. What i have done was to generate two random strings over and over until they generate same Hashcode. This code seems working (Theoretically) but it may takes centuries to complete. So I was thinking to do vice versa and generate two strings from 1 HashCode.
Strange behavior of Enumerator.MoveNext()
returns a mutable value type ( ). You're storing that value in the anonymous type. Now, let's have a look at what this does: Now note what we're calling on - the copy of the value which is in the anonymous type. You can't actually change the value in the anonymous type - all you've got is a property you can call, which will give you a copy of the value. If you change the code to: ... then you'll end up getting a reference in the anonymous type. A reference to a box containing the mutable value.
Minnesota Orchestra in Cuba: Connections forged in Havana will have lasting effects
As hopeful as everyone was when the Minnesota Orchestra landed in Cuba last week, I don’t think anyone could have prepared for how profound the experience would be. I struggle to recall another situation where I’ve seen music so literally change people’s lives in such a short amount of time.
Steps to find the public IP address of a computer from scratch
That is pretty much it. The source IP of the request is part of the packet that contains the query. For example, here's a CGI script written in perl that prints back the IP, and as you can see, there's not much to it: #!/usr/bin/perl use strict; use warnings; use CGI qw(:standard); print header(); print '<html><head><title>IP echoer</title></head><body><h1>'; print $ENV{REMOTE_ADDR}; print '</h1></body></html>'; You can see it in action here.
Is it secure to derive multiple keys from one password?
6 Problem My application (which I will be writing in C#) uses a key derivation method (Rfc2898DeriveBytes, 4000 iterations) along with a salt to generate a "hash" of a password. This hash is then sent to a database so that the user can use that password in the future to authenticate to their account. So far that should be secure, but after that, I want to use Rfc2898DeriveBytes on the same password to generate a key which can then be used for encryption.
