DFL senators: Could stronger laws have prevented the Loring Park mass shooting?
DFL senators: Could stronger laws have prevented the Loring Park mass shooting? Earlier this year, the Minnesota Senate passed a comprehensive package to prevent gun violence. It was blocked by Lisa Demuth. A Minneapolis Police officer lays out a perimeter with police tape after a mass shooting in the Loring Park neighborhood in Minneapolis, Sept. 2.

Opinion editor's note: Strib Voices publishes a mix of guest commentaries online and in print each day. To contribute, click here. In the wake of the Aug. 27 tragedy at Annunciation Church and School - where two young Minnesotans were killed and many more were injured - our community came together in grief and in determination. Guest Commentary: Investing in the infrastructure needs of our communities Published 6:08 pm Tuesday, February 7, 2023 By Scott Dibble Senate Transportation Committee Chair The foundation of Minnesota’s economy is our infrastructure – the thousands of miles of roads, bridges, and transit that connect our communities, support our commerce, and connect Minnesotans to each other. It’s so important, in fact, that funding for transportation is actually mandated in our state’s constitution.

We’re living through as challenging a political time as most of us can remember.
It's time for holdouts in the Legislature to accept rail transit
A misguided theme has disappointingly persisted in some small circles at the Minnesota Legislature: attacking metro regional transportation and vilifying widely supported transit projects. Southwest Light Rail, the extension of the Green Line, has been the focus of this unfair derision — demonized by a select few legislators who have ignored the line’s excellent cost-benefit ratio and extensive public review and approval process.Sen.
Finding a path forward on police reform
It has been two weeks since Jamar Clark lost his life. A broad swath of people have seized this moment to call attention and demand an end to the ongoing problem of mistreatment at the hands of the police directed at poor and minority people, especially black people, in our city. And then a week ago, in only what can be considered a reprehensible hate crime, white supremacists tried to murder five of our citizens who were participating in the call to action.
