Being an idiot and writing your newsletter - an interview I did for Creator Spotlight
Hey you lil pancakes and waffles how are you? Your boy (me) got interviewed for Creator Spotlight, a “guide to the newsletter world” that I actually enjoy reading! Francis Zierer did his homework and read basically everything I’d ever written. Going back through it all was a strange and illuminating ride! As someone who lives in a perpetual state of present-day dissatisfaction, I’d forgotten about so many of the great times we’ve had along the way.

PGA TOUR Champions One & Done presented by SERVPRO offers more fun and bragging rights in 2018. Competitors will be able to pick one player for each of the 24 events during the Regular Season and attempt to accumulate the highest total of Charles Schwab Cup money over the course of the season. In the One & Done format, once a player is picked, he cannot be selected again. So choose wisely. For more on the game and One & Done strategy, check out Rob Bolton’s primer.
One & Done: Rapiscan Systems Classic
Fantasy columnist Miguel Angel Jimenez Tom Pernice Jr. So many juicy choices but Stricker is the smartest while hot. Now that he's no longer a non-winner on PGA TOUR Champions, the floodgates can open. The Mechanic seems obvious, but he's been inconsistent just enough in 2018 to wait him out. EXPERT ROB BOLTON, Fantasy columnist WHO WILL WIN Steve Stricker So many juicy choices but Stricker is the smartest while hot.
One & Done: Toshiba Classic
Fantasy columnist Fred Couples Kevin Sutherland Couples is the no-brainer as a two-time champ and local resident, but we always need to be cautious about his back in inclement weather. Cool, damp conditions are forecast this weekend and he couldn't defend at the Chubb three weeks ago because of his recurring discomfort.

Jungfrau Valley, Switzerland - A "Must Do" For Trail Runners
(The Jungfrau Mountains) There are mountains we know, there are mountains we seek, and then there are the mountains that inspire us right to the core of our being. When you find the great ones, you know it instantly. No picture, no poem, no blog story can possibly capture the majesty and beauty absorbed in their presence. You don't just miss them when you leave, you yearn for them, deeply, and only another visit can suffice.
6 Ways to Get a Fanatical Customer Base
Entrepreneurs long to see the telltale signs of a passionate customer base: lines around the block on product launch day, pushing and shoving as the doors open and celebrations at the checkout counter. But gaining a legion of loyal followers doesn’t happen by accident. Companies such as Apple and Tesla Motors that owe their success to passionate fans gained these followers with a formula for product lust.
Running the 2015 Comrades Marathon - An Experience Like No Other
90th annual Comrades Marathon in Durban, South Africa, known as the oldest and largest ultramarathon in the world. This was a "bucket list" race for sure, if anything just to see what it's like when this many people go 87km (55 miles), and visit a country on the other side of the globe known for its hospitality to runners. The experience did not disappoint! "The Comrades", as it is called here, has a deep history with the growth of South Africa.
Sunny Smiles At The 2015 Marin Ultra Challenge 25k
It was a postcard-worthy sunny morning in Sausalito, CA, as I lined up with 350+ runners for Inside Trail Racing's Marin Ultra Challenge 25k last Saturday. We have had many of these perfect California weekends lately (sorry Bostonians), but I still feel like each one should be cherished. My lingering chest cold forced a kick-down from the planned 50k here (I missed my alarm too), but a casual 25k sounded like a great way to honor the day.
The Na Pali Coast in Kaua'i, Hawaii
I stole away for an afternoon on Kaua'i, Hawaii, to run/hike the 11-mile Kalalau Trail along the Na Pali Coast this last week. Although the trail was quite technical (often too technical or overgrown to run), it was a worthy adventure! The Kalalau Trail is at the northern point of Kaua'i, about an hours drive from Lihue Airport, literally at the end of the highway. It's a popular tourist destination, so best to hit it as soon as the sun comes up.
New 100-Mile PR at the 2015 Rocky Raccoon 100m/USATF Championships
2015 Rocky Raccoon 100-Mile Run (RR100) last Saturday morning. Thirty seconds to start…it’s the last time your brain allows you to absorb the entirety of the next 30 hours, and the sheer insanity of a sport and race that annually draws 500+ runners here to Hunstville, TX. We are all fidgeting – the fast runners bouncing like hungry greyhounds, the vets finding solace and strength in the moment – but the newbies have it the worst.
The 2015 Ultra Lottery Season - Which Race Will Choose You?
It's lottery season again in the world of ultrarunning! As our sport continues to grow (up 345% in the last 10 years), the clash of limited space/permits and high demand has put more races than ever in the lottery game. There's even the semi-disappointing trend of non-refundable "lottery fees" popping up a few races this year.

Is Exercising Addictive? (Slate)
interesting article about exercise and addiction. I found it fascinating how he looks at both human and animal studies over time to determine if exercise lessens the cravings for drugs because it is a distraction, a stress reliever, or perhaps due to the fact that exercise is a replacement since it stimulates the brain in similar ways. Some highlights: Rats who were allowed to exercise before given access to drugs ended up taking less drugs.
