BLOG: Starting a relationship with your AI assistant
Key takeaways: Build confidence in AI by using it in your everyday life. The goal is not to develop trust in AI but to develop confidence in your ability to use it for trustworthy results. The use of AI large language models in health care is expanding rapidly. Healio recently conducted a survey of health care providers across a wide range of specialties and found that more than 70% are using AI professionally.
The View From Here
The View From Here Scott A. Edmonds, OD, FAAO, applies his 44 years of patient care in hospitals and private practice and 35+ years as a health care consultant to topics relevant to optometrists today. BLOG: Start using AI for evidence-based optometry
Key takeaways: Large language models can help ensure you are providing evidence-based care. Getting the right answer out of LLMs takes practice. The use of artificial intelligence for patient care is no longer a novelty. According to the 2024-2025 survey of the American Medical Association, 66% of physicians report using some AI in clinical practice, up from 38% in 2023. That number for optometry is not as clear, but the estimates based on indirect surveys show similar results.
BLOG: Clinical AI tools help save time, improve care
Key takeaways: Clinical AI tools can save providers a significant amount of time and help grow their personal knowledge base. Their output is subject to “hallucination” and sometimes needs to be challenged. The time that has elapsed since I first learned about the large language models of artificial intelligence and today, where I use them all day, every day in clinical optometry, has been quite short.

BLOG: What every optometrist should know about GLP-1 receptor agonists
Thank you for another insightful and forward-looking commentary on the evolving role of optometry within the health care ecosystem. Your article on GLP-1 receptor agonists does more than educate us on a class of medications with growing relevance — it challenges us to reflect on how we define and live up to our identity as primary care providers.
BLOG: Beware of the triple whammy to avoid kidney problems
Key takeaways: Patients should be counseled about ARBs, ACE inhibitors, NSAIDs and proton pump inhibitors. Optometrists need to know about overall changes in medical care as well as new medicines and treatment options. Many optometrists liberally prescribe NSAIDs. When treating uveitis, we often boost the topical steroid with over-the-counter ibuprofen. This reduces pain and adds an extra measure of treatment for the inflammation.
BLOG: Embrace AI to excel in your field
I have a new best friend. But first, a little background. I have an impressive library of health care books that I have collected over the years. My optometry collection includes Clinical Refraction by Irving Borish, Sir Stewart Duke-Elder’s System of Ophthalmology and, of course, all of Lou Catania’s Primary Care of the Anterior Segment editions. These books were my best friends in optometry school and my early career. With the advent of the internet, I found a new friend in Dr. Google.
BLOG: Do we need the US Department of Education?
The U.S. Department of Education took shape in the mid-19th century, when President Andrew Johnson signed legislation in 1867 for its creation. The following year it became an office within the Department of the Interior to collect information on schools and establish an effective school system. It languished there for many years overseeing the development of the U.S. public school system.
BLOG: The value of WHO
I had the unique opportunity to serve as an adjunct faculty member, as a lecturer in the public health track, at the Pennsylvania College of Optometry for more than 30 years. I worked under the leadership of my friend and mentor, Anthony Di Stefano, OD, MPH, who asked me do at least two lectures each year. To keep these presentations fresh and timely, I needed to research health trends and data on an annual basis.

Tips to Help Block Blue Light in an Increasingly Remote World
During a surge in remote working from the pandemic, a need to focus on physical health has also increased, especially from exposure to blue light during frequent screen time. With persistent spread of the virus that causes COVID-19 in Colorado and nationwide, some traditionally in-person activities — work, school and social interactions — will likely remain remote more often than usual for the foreseeable future.

Children should have their vision examined early in life
The fall school season is in full swing and it’s an ideal time to get your child’s eyes checked. Good eye health is important, in part because 80 percent of what children learn is through their eyes. The American Optometric Association recommends that a child’s first comprehensive eye exam should occur between 6 months and 12 months, again at age 3, and before entering school at age 5 or 6.

BLOG: Another perspective on the role for optometry in a pandemic
April 14, 2020 As the days drag on for many of us sheltering at home, there is plenty of time for us to consider our personal role in this pandemic as well as that of our profession. I posted a recent blog of my opinion that most optometrists should stand down, close their offices and play only a supporting role with telehealth solutions.
