Interview

How is social media changing news?

For the first time in history, mobile computing has been adopted by the majority of society. Three powerful systems converged evolve us from passively viewing news to actively engaging in society. First was the consolidation of social media into a few universal platforms that connect us and allow us to push word-of-mouth messages faster than ever before. The second element was the adoption of smartphone technology to have these social networks accessible to mass society 24-hours a day. Our connectivity to news and information is now far more constant than the generation before's early morning newspaper, listening to the radio in the car, or watching the evening news for a simple hour. The final piece of this equation is the advances in mobile payment systems to make it more safe and comfortable for users to move funds faster than at any point in history. Now, when a crisis happens, actions can follow, Messages can be spread, calls can be made, response and action can quickly occur.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

To seek out and report the unbiased truth by asking the hard questions, researching credible sources, and uncover the facts in a timely manner.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

I have written several stories to push Congress into taking action on making social media and mobile communications safer places. Everything from cleaning up text messaging spam to closing loopholes in Section 230 of 1996 Communications Decency Act to end shield laws and force social media companies to take responsibility for their platforms. I am most proud of a piece I wrote in the NY Times encouraging Democrats and progressives to continue to evolve their social media strategies and use these platforms in new ways 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

I enjoy reading well-researched thought-pieces in places like The Atlantic, The Baffler, TheNation, and the Sunday NY Times.
