Antarctica's Doomsday Glacier is melting twice as fast as we previously thought Original
The collapse of Antarctica's Thwaites Glacier is already a major concern as the world continues to warm, but new research has revealed that ocean water is eating away at the underside of the glacier far faster than we previously thought. Along Antarctica's west coast, there are a number of glaciers that extend as ice shelves out over the Southern Ocean. Due to its size, one of the most important is Thwaites.
Auroras may shine across Canada Wednesday night due to blustery solar wind
Check your weather forecast for clear skies Wednesday night through Thursday morning, as a blustery stream of the solar wind could spark aurora displays across parts of Canada. Over the past week, observers have been watching two large gaps in the solar corona, the Sun's magnetically-infused atmosphere.
Today marks the first day of fall. Here’s the science behind the equinox Original
Tuesday, September 22 is the Autumnal Equinox for the northern hemisphere in 2026, marking the first day of astronomical fall for the year, and this year it is the latest fall equinox since 2023. Standing here on Earth's surface, everything may seem perfectly normal with the universe. However, looking at our world from afar, the entire planet is slightly off-kilter.
NASA satellite spots a new once-in-a-century crater on the Moon Original
NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter has found at least 1,000 newly formed craters on the Moon over the past 17 years, but McGetchin sets a new record as the largest discovered so far. Now, NASA scientists working on the mission are reporting the discovery of a new crater that formed between April 11 and May 22, 2024. A map of the Moon's near-side highlights and zooms in on the region where this new crater formed (inset, upper right), and shows an oblique view of McGetchin taken as LRO flew past.

Asteroid impact with Moon would produce visible flash, followed by meteor storms
Asteroid impact with Moon would produce visible flash, followed by meteor storms On December 22, 2032, a sixty-metre-wide asteroid may strike the Moon. If this happens, it will not only produce a visible flash, easily spotted from Earth, but will likely be followed by periodic meteor storms streaking across our night skies. Known as 2024 YR4, this space rock was discovered in late 2024 and initially caused some alarm, as it had a small chance of hitting Earth.
Mark your calendars! The Blood Worm Moon will soon shine across Canada
Mark your calendars! The Blood Worm Moon will soon shine across Canada Early in the morning on March 3, 2026, the Full Moon will align perfectly with the Sun and Earth, to pass directly through the deepest part of Earth's shadow. For up to an hour or more (depending on where you are watching from), all of Earth's sunrises and sunsets will turn the Full Moon from grey to dusky red as we witness a total lunar eclipse.
NASA rover hears tiny crackles of thunder and lightning on Mars
A microphone on the 'head' of NASA's Perseverance rover has recorded the sounds of dust devils whirling by, but it also picked up a surprise — distinct snaps and pops indicating that tiny sparks of lightning were discharging from the dusty vortices as they passed. Here on Earth, there is an average of 100 lightning discharges every second around the world.
The Northern Lights may shine above Canada in the nights ahead
A volatile region of the Sun, crackling with flares and blasting solar storms into space, is setting us up for some intense space weather in the nights ahead! Over the past few weeks, solar astronomers and space weather enthusiasts, alike, have witnessed an amazing sequence of eruptions from the Sun. These coronal mass ejections, aka solar storms, occurred either on the opposite side of the Sun from us, or were aimed well away from Earth.
Superintendent of schools’ message to the community - Johnston Sun Rise
The first day of school is always a special moment. Across Johnston this week, I saw smiling faces, eager teachers and proud families as we began the 2025–26 school year together. For me, it was not only the start of a new academic year but also the beginning of my tenure as Superintendent of Johnston Public Schools. I am honored and humbled to join this community at such an exciting time. Johnston has always been a community with strong values: family, pride, and resilience.
Where to start investing in Austin Texas
@Edwin L. the short answer is no. Long term rentals in town are closer to .7% of purchase price per month. You mentioned ARV which would account for some sweat equity improvement and also perhaps an under-rented property. Those situations help but Austin is largely an appreciation play at this point. Most entry-level single family homes and duplexes are priced such that they will just cover the monthly payment, repairs, and property management with 25% down.

Look up! What's going on in the November night sky?
No less than three separate meteor showers brighten our night skies throughout the month of November, and one — the Leonids — may put on a show unlike anything we've seen in years. The cycle of the Moon lines up quite well for this month as we slip into November. The New Moon takes place during the day on the 1st.
Look up! The Orionid meteor shower peaks tonight
If your weather is good tonight, take some time to look up. You might spot pieces of Halley's comet as they produce streaks of light across the night sky. Each year, throughout the month of October, Earth crosses a stream of icy debris left behind in space by Comet 1P/Halley. While immersed in this stream, tiny bits of the comet plunge into the upper atmosphere, resulting in meteors flashing overhead.

The Fall 'Season of Meteor Showers' may include rare astronomical treats
As the nights grow longer and the weather cools off, Fall is a great time of year to get out to stargaze, especially since this could rightly be called The Season of Meteor Showers. At 8:43 a.m. EDT on September 22, the Sun will pass over the celestial equator headed south. This will mark the 2024 autumnal equinox for the northern hemisphere, and the earliest one we’ve seen in 228 years. The last September equinox that was close was 1896, when it occurred at 8:03 a.m. EST on the 22nd.

Science Behind the Weather: What is a derecho?
The word invokes just as much trepidation as "hurricane" or "tornado" to those who know the power of a derecho, but what's behind this uncommon form of severe weather? A derecho is defined as a violent, prolonged wind event, produced along the leading edge of a widespread storm system known as a 'mesoscale convective system', or MCS. It forms a curved (or bowed) line of thunderstorms, frequently called a 'bow echo' due to its shape on radar.

Earth's days are getting longer due to melting polar ice
New research has confirmed that our days are getting longer due to global warming. Earth's rotation is anything but constant. It slows down and speeds up due to a number of different factors, and this has a direct impact on the length of our days. The strongest influence over time has been tidal friction with the Moon, which slows the planet's rotation enough to add an average of 2.4 milliseconds to our day every century.

Spectacular new "3D" Pillars of Creation merges Hubble and Webb views
Scott Sutherland June 28, 2024 at 2:30 PM·2 min read One of the most famous objects in space has been imaged by our most powerful telescopes, and now scientists have produced an amazing 3D visualization of The Pillars of Creation, revealing it in greater detail than ever before. Roughly 7,000 light years away from Earth is an immense cloud of dust and gas known as the Eagle Nebula. At the heart of this cloud is one of the most well-imaged objects in space — The Pillars of Creation.
Why Toronto's Don Valley Parkway floods so often
It's almost a "classic" Toronto experience these days. How many times have we seen this scenario play out? A particularly strong rainstorm washes over the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), with a concentrated heavy downpour drenching the east end of Toronto. Suddenly, commuting along the Don Valley Parkway goes from simply slow to downright hazardous as the Don River crests its banks and envelopes the traffic artery's south end.

Strongest solar flare since 2017 just blasted out from the Sun
The same sunspot complex that caused the bright auroras in our skies last week took a parting shot at us as it slipped around the edge of the Sun. The resulting solar flare was the strongest we've seen so far this cycle, and going all the way back to September 2017. The Sun's activity is definitely intensifying as we approach the peak of Solar Cycle 25.

Blackout-causing 'super' solar storms happen more often than we thought
Powerful solar storms pose a great danger to our technologies here on Earth, and space weather scientists just determined that we see these storms far more often than we thought, possibly up to once every 25 years. In September of 1859, while observing sunspots with his telescope, astronomer Richard Carrington witnessed what is still considered to be the most powerful solar flare ever seen.

Bizarre alien 'spiders' spotted in 'Inca City' formation on Mars
Flying over the Martian south pole, two European satellites have spotted hundreds of 'spiders' sprouting up across a mysterious formation known as Inca City. In the south polar region of Mars lies a complex series of roughly square and rectangular ridges and valleys whose origin still remains a mystery. Officially named Angustus Labyrinthus upon its discovery by NASA's Mariner 9 probe in the 1970s, its vague resemblance to ancient ruins on Earth prompted scientists give it the nickname Inca City.
