Predators acquire Shane Wright from Kraken for Matthew Wood
The trade comes after Wright finding himself in trade rumours for a significant amount of time, as he has yet to live up to the pedigree of a fourth-overall pick with the Kraken. The Predators swing a deal looking to take a gamble on him in hopes that they finally can find a long-term solution to their center depth. Wright has started the season on a slower note, as he has just three goals and one assist for four points in 14 games before the trade.

Capitals place Dylan McIlrath on waivers Original
The Washington Capitals have placed defenseman Dylan McIlrath on waivers for the purpose of re-assigning him to their AHL affiliate, the Hershey Bears. McIlrath finds himself on waivers in the wake of the trade the Capitals made earlier on Sunday to acquire goaltender Remi Poirier from the New Jersey Devils. With the addition of Poirier, Washington was over their 23-man roster limit, so a player needed to be sent down to accommodate the trade, with McIlrath being the eventual choice.
Canadiens’ Mike Matheson out two weeks with lower-body injury
Matheson had already missed Thursday’s 5-2 win over the Dallas Stars, as the team had announced prior to the game that he was would not be playing and would be reevaluated when they returned to Montreal. As they start a three-game homestand, the update is that Matheson will miss the next two weeks with his injury. It’s unclear what the cause of the injury was, as Matheson played the entirety of his last game, Tuesday’s 2-0 win over the St. Louis Blues, including the last shift of the game.
Hockey Canada, others react to overturning of ban against Russia
“Hockey Canada shares the International Ice Hockey Federation’s (HF) disappointment with the Court of Arbitration for Sport’s (CAS) decision today,” Hockey Canada said in a statement regarding the announcement. “While the implications of the ruling are not immediately clear, our organization is in contact with the IIHF to learn more and we await further understanding of the potential impact the decision will have on the IH’s Member National Associations and future competitions.
Ducks’ early season struggles no surprise after disaster offseason
The Anaheim Ducks were one of the league’s exciting young teams last season, as their rebuild finally came to fruition and they not only made the playoffs, but they even won a series against the Edmonton Oilers before losing to the Vegas Golden Knights in the second round.
Avalanche’s Josh Manson out eight weeks with ankle injury
The injury occurred late in the first period of Wednesday’s 5-2 win over the New Jersey Devils after taking a weird hit. He struggled to get off the ice and had to be helped down the tunnel, and did not return to the game after that. The Avalanche confirmed his departure at the start of the third period. Manson’s current timeline for return has him set to return after the holiday break, which will mean the Avalanche will be without him for at least 20 games barring a quicker recovery than expected.

Maxwell: Evolution, climate change, slavery. Let’s strip it all from Florida textbooks!
In recent weeks, scientists and educators have expressed concern that evolution is being stripped from Florida's teaching standards. Yeah, I know that debating evolution feels more 1926 than 2026. But frankly, I'm tired of debating things altogether. That's why I've decided to go all-in on Florida's goal of prioritizing political narratives where we censor, whitewash and erase every scientific fact and historical truth that gets in the way.
Red Wings suspend Dylan Larkin without pay Original
The Detroit Red Wings announced on Thursday that they have suspended center Dylan Larkin without pay. The decision comes in the wake of Larkin not attending team practice on Wednesday. He had initially been announced as out for Thursday’s game against the Chicago Blackhawks, but then Larkin announced he’d be sitting out until he was traded through his agent, Pat Brisson. In response, the Red Wings will suspend him without pay for the time being.
Will Quinn Hughes re-sign with the Wild?
The Minnesota Wild have started the season on a strong footing, as they sit atop the Central Division with a 9-3-2 record, have the second-best record in the Western Conference and the third-best record in the league. A driving force in that success has been Quinn Hughes play on the blueline, as he’s been excellent at both ends of the ice for Minnesota.
Report: Wild’s Faber clears return to play protocol, Spurgeon out week to week
Faber has missed the entirety of the regular season for the Wild after sustaining a skull fracture when a shot struck him on the left side of his face during their September 25th 2-1 loss to the Dallas Stars in the preseason. He underwent surgery to repair the fracture on September 27th, and has since been recovering for his return to the lineup. At this point in time, the update on Faber does not come with an idea for when he can return.

Penguins place Elmer Soderblom on injured reserve, activate Justin Brazeau
Soderblom’s status was in doubt after the team announced on Tuesday that he wasn’t participating in practice and was day-to-day with an upper-body injury. This latest announcement confirms that he will miss at least the next week with the injury, as he can’t be activated from IR for at least seven days. Soderblom has been in and out of the lineup this season as a healthy scratch, only playing in six of the Penguins’ 12 games so far this season. He has one assist in those six games.
Are any front offices feeling the heat early in the season?
While the season is still early, it’s not so early for teams to start reacting, especially the ones who are struggling more than expected. Often times, the head coach is an easy move to make to shake things up, especially with how they impact the on-ice product. But sometimes, it’s the general manager who takes the blame.

Canucks fans’ response to Hughes’ return was (rightfully) tamer than Tkachuk’s:
Despite the fact that the trade happened almost a year ago, Quinn Hughes finally played his first game against the Vancouver Canucks in Vancouver after he was dealt to the Minnesota Wild. There were some expectations that it would carry similar weight to Brady Tkachuk’s return to Ottawa earlier in the week, but at the same time, it was a much less volatile situation.
Alexander Nikishin extension is an underwhelming ending to contract saga
The Carolina Hurricanes and defenseman Alexander Nikishin have finally come to an agreement on a new contract, and for how long and drawn out the negotiations went, the ending was a bit anticlimactic. The defenseman wanted a bigger pay day and to be moved elsewhere, but instead settled for $3 million this season, and just to play in Carolina for now. It makes sense, but with how the situation was going, it feels weird for it to end like this.

Maxwell: Pop quiz on Orlando Magic, creepy decorations, even creepier new Florida driver’s license
We're covering a lot of topics today pop-quiz style. And since I think many of us are experiencing politics overload, I sprinkled in some lighter items along the way. The Orlando Magic opened their season at home Wednesday night with high hopes, only to see them dashed by the Atlanta Hawks who beat the Magic 132-125. On the plus side, Magic superstar Paolo Banchero led all scorers, netting how many points? Answer: C. Banchero scored 22 in the first half alone.

Maxwell: Amendment 3 mutiny. Lawmakers now oppose property-tax measure they put on Florida ballots
On Tuesday, Florida Senate President Ben Albritton came out against Amendment 3, saying that, while he's all for lowering taxes, this particular proposal is a rotten idea. Specifically, the veteran Republican legislator said the property-tax cut would gut funding for law enforcement and other needed services in Florida's rural counties. Many others reached the same conclusion long ago.

Maxwell: Florida GOP threatens TV stations to squelch talk of Hope Florida scandal
If you were trying to write a fictional tale about outlandish politics, you'd be hard-pressed to dream up anything more absurd than Florida's current reality. Here, the attorney general — the guy who's supposed to tackle wrongdoing — was not only exposed for being neck-deep in a $10 million scandal, he and his political allies are now threatening those who talk and ask questions about what he did.
Leafs’ John Tavares week-to-week with lower-body injury
Tavares sustained the injury during Thursday’s 5-4 overtime loss to the Buffalo Sabres. Nick Paul and Josh Norris were tangled with each other in the middle of the ice, and when Paul shoved Norris onto the ice, Norris fell into a passing Tavares, taking the 36 year old’s legs out from underneath him and causing him to fall awkwardly on the ice. He remained on the ice for a bit before requiring assistance to the dressing room, and did not return to the game.
Maxwell: Brodeur vs. Lowndes will show whether scandals matter in Florida Original
Getting your Trinity Audio player ready... The word “scandal” is sometimes thrown around pretty loosely. But boy, does it apply to Jason Brodeur’s 2020 campaign. Three different people were either convicted or took plea deals in an elaborate and illegal scheme meant to help the Sanford Republican get into the Florida Senate. This wasn’t a campaign as much as a criminal enterprise. My question: Will any of that matter to voters?
How Adam Pelech became one of the NHL’s best (and most underrated) defensive defensemen
The art of the defensive defenseman is often lost on hockey fans. To be fair to the casual follower, it’s sometimes difficult to properly enjoy a defensive masterclass. If you want to appreciate an elite goal scorer or intelligent playmaker, you just have to watch for when the puck is on their stick and witness them work their magic. Defensive players thrive when nothing is happening. Kind of hard to follow along with nothing, right?
What has fueled Jets’ hot start?
It looked like the 2026-27 season was going to be a disaster for the Winnipeg Jets. Fresh off a disappointing 2025-26 campaign, their Hart Trophy-winning goaltender Connor Hellebuyck requested a trade, and to this point he has yet to even report to the team. It had all the makings of another poor season in Winnipeg. But so far it’s been anything but.
Maxwell: RJ Mitte made helping kids in Orlando a mission
On Monday, the world woke to news that actor RJ Mitte, best known for playing Walter White's son on the "Breaking Bad" TV show, had died at the age of 34. His representatives said it was the result of suicide. Some might assume this was just another sad ending for yet another troubled celebrity. But Mitte wasn't like most celebrities. He lived his life to help others, particularly kids with disabilities.

Maxwell: Of 4 Florida judges who want voters to keep them on the bench, 1 should go
Every election cycle, Floridians are asked to vote on whether they believe judges on the state's highest courts deserve to stay on the bench. Yet many Floridians are clueless about how to cast an informed vote. Many don't even try. In fact, more than a million Floridians who fill out ballots usually leave these "merit retention" questions blank. That's understandable.

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready... One of the most important races in Florida this year is also one that’s being largely overlooked — for attorney general. The office is critically important. The 10 NHL players paid closest to their on-ice values in 2026-27
Perhaps one of the hardest things to pull off when signing players to contracts is locking them in at exactly their market values. Considering the peaks and valleys of NHL players’ careers, they often get signed during high or low points, so their contracts are disproportionate to their on-ice values. But sometimes, teams get it just right.
Maxwell: Ignore the polls in Florida. Focus on what matters. A voter guide Original
Getting your Trinity Audio player ready... For the past decade or so, the news coverage of campaigns in America has been exhaustingly predictable. Media obsess over polls rather than issues. Elections are then held, showing that the polls were way off. Media and pollsters then vow to do better next time … yet don’t. So now, as we endure another poll-dominated news cycle — this time offering euphorically optimistic predictions for Democrats in reliably red Florida — forgive me if I’m skeptical.
Islanders’ Semyon Varlamov to make first NHL start since 2024
Varlamov hasn’t played a professional game since November 24, 2024, as the netminder has missed the last 56 games of the 2024-25 season and all 82 of the 2025-26 season with a knee injury. He had undergone surgery for the injury in December 2024, and began skating in the 2025 offseason with the hope of returning during the 2025-26 season, but had setbacks to that return.

Maxwell: Faith-based voucher schools can reject students with disabilities in Florida
One of the dirty little secrets about school choice in Florida is that students with disabilities often don't actually have many choices. That's because, while public schools are required to serve all children, Florida allows private schools to refuse them. Most people already know that Florida allows discrimination against LGBTQ students. Many faith-based schools refuse to admit gay students or even kids who have same-sex parents.
