So what are we thinking here restoration cost wise? $2,000 per engine for a respray, new plugs and retune; $10,000 to redo the hull and top sides; An extra $5,000 for the custom drink holders and interior (yes maybe I allowed tooo much here, but they always sting you on the extra bits) $1,500 to shine up the shiny bits; Say $2,000 for electrics; Another $2000 for transport etc etc. so that's.... $24,500. And not a penny more.
The best thing any owner can do for a boat is to use it. Sitting in a garage somewhere is tantamount to operating a non profit museum. Why put a boat into a museum when you can enjoy the pride of the use and ownership? Every boat requires maintenance. Any investment you don't make this year into your brand new boat is simply depreciating deferred maintenance down the road. 54GT versus the ride of my 53c? Lmao. Go run a 54GT into 10-12 footers at 20 knots for several hours and then get back to me.
October 4, 2010 Dear SanJuan Owner, It has recently come to our attention that there may be a potential problem with the Yanmar engines in your SanJuan. There have been several failures in the 6LY2A-STP 440 hp engines apparently due to defective valves. Even with all regular maintenance having been performed, the engines can fail without any warning, generally requiring replacing the entire engine, a very costly job, to say nothing about losing precious boating time.
