緬甸司法機制初現曙光

A legal path to justice emerges for Myanmar
Last week a partial but significant foundation was laid to provide accountability for gross human rights violations in Myanmar, and hopefully to deter repetition. After receiving a 444-page UN report extensively detailing human rights violations in Myanmar and making recommendations to address them, the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva passed a resolution that includes the establishment of an evidence-gathering mechanism to enable future trials.
Rohingya Crisis Demands Australian Leadership on Human Rights
Australia now sits as a member of the UN Human Rights Council for the first time, sharing an enhanced responsibility to promote and protect human rights globally. This commitment must be robustly pursued in neighboring Southeast Asia, where human rights are under assault and states are reluctant to call each other out on international law violations.

Filling the gaps at Kyaukphyu
IN ITS interim report released in March, the Advisory Commission on Rakhine State chaired by former United Nations secretary-general Kofi Annan, called for a comprehensive assessment of the special economic zone in Kyaukphyu Township. The aim would be to “explore how the SEZ may affect local communities and map how other economic sectors in the state may benefit (or possibly suffer) from the SEZ”.
Kyaukphyu shows need for SEZ law reform
ABOUT 20,000 residents of Kyaukphyu Township in Rakhine State are at risk of losing their land and livelihoods because of land acquisition for developing a Special Economic Zone. The land acquisition, initiated by the previous Union Solidarity and Development Party government, involves more than 1,800 acres (about 728 hectares) covering nine village tracts. Research by the International Commission of Jurists shows this land acquisition does not comply with Myanmar’s land laws.
Time for transparency on Kyaukphyu SEZ
ALTHOUGH Myanmar’s new civilian-led government has said little about the future of controversial, large-scale foreign investments, some projects are gaining ground without adequate public consultation and oversight. Among them is the Kyaukphyu Special Economic Zone, a China-backed project in Rakhine State. Communities affected by the development of the Kyaukphyu SEZ are concerned about speculators improperly buying-up land and are worried they will be displaced without due compensation.
