Moving Beyond the Myths in Nutrition
On December 4, 2015, I delivered the Knorr Family Healthy Lifestyles Lecture at the 35th Annual Family Medicine Winter Symposium of the University of Kansas School of Medicine Wichita. Below is an approximate slide-by-slide transcript of the talk. Slides (with references) are available here.
Stop alcohol ads on subways & buses
It’s time to clean up the New York City transit system. No, I’m not a sanitation worker or a police officer — I’m a family physician who wants to help people live the longest, healthiest lives possible, and who realizes that exposures in our transit system are making people sick. I’m not talking about exposures to rats or grime or infectious diseases. I’m talking about exposures to something more subtle but just as sinister: alcohol ads.
Selling Sickness, One Subway Station at a Time
In a new study, several subway stations had more than 10 unhealthy food or beverage ads to view. (iStockphoto) Advertisements that entice us to eat junk foods are a daily threat to healthful eating. That threat may be greatest for the most vulnerable among us. How much advertising we encounter in our daily lives depends in no small part on where we live and who advertisers think we are. That ads on television and other screens target certain populations is well-established.
Will Your Laundromat Support Your Healthier Diet This Year?
If you shop in department stores this holiday season, you might expect displays of home goods, clothes and accessories. What you might not expect are aisles of candy, cookies, chips and soda. After all, food is not a traditional department in department stores. And yet, department stores often sell both food and drinks.

Memorial Day: Fire Up the Grill and Be Wary of Food Labels
Memorial Day. Time to pay tribute to our fallen heroes, celebrate summer's unofficial start and enjoy festivities and food. There will be barbeques and picnics, hot dogs and hamburgers, chips and pickles, popsicles and soft drinks. All of these packaged foods will have labels, and all of these labels will be getting an overhaul. Last week, the Food and Drug Administration announced the modernization of the Nutrition Facts for packaged food.
When School Food Policies Are Just Nuts
Over the winter holidays, my son ate sweets. Lots of sweets. Too many, if you asked me. But people didn't ask; holidays are times for family, and relatives seemed intent on supplying confections. Grandmas presented pies and cakes, trays of fudge and cookies and had ice-cream cake and soda at the ready. Uncles and aunts brought chocolates and candy canes, and cousins found additional sweets hidden in cabinets when no one was looking. But these were the holidays – special times.

Always Hungry? Avoidable Cravings, Distraction and Dysfunction in Ourselves and Our Kids
Have a New Year's resolution to lose weight, but feel like you don't have the willpower to eat less? Or maybe you've tried losing weight before, but wound up heavier than when you started? Are you struggling to cut calories, but feel constantly hungry and fatigued? Do you feel deprived and think about food to the point of distraction at home and at work? Are your kids distracted, too? Do they have trouble focusing at school? Do their teachers report inattention and poor concentration?
New Year’s Resolution: Forget About Weight, Let’s Eat for Better Health
Eat too much over the holiday? For many people, the New Year is a time for resolutions, particularly resolutions to lose weight. But there is a problem with weight-loss resolutions: Weight is not what matters. If we care about how we look, how we feel and how healthy we are, it is time to direct our focus away from our bathroom scales. Pounds gained or lost are poor measures of what actually counts – such as fatness, fitness and wellness.
Just in time for the holidays: Fat, sugar and grandma's cooking
Should you be worried about grandma’s cooking this holiday? After all, she cooks with butter, heavy cream and gobs of cheese. In fact, she uses all manner of fatty fair in her dishes. You see, grandma grew up in a time when people didn’t worry about fat, and particularly about the saturated fat in butter, cream and cheeses. But times have changed. Today, experts and guidelines tell us to beware of fat, and particularly saturated fat.

The wrong white crystals: not salt but sugar as aetiological in hypertension and cardiometabolic disease
Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of premature mortality in the developed world, and hypertension is its most important risk factor. Controlling hypertension is a major focus of public health initiatives, and dietary approaches have historically focused on sodium. While the potential benefits of sodium-reduction strategies are debatable, one fact about which there is little debate is that the predominant sources of sodium in the diet are industrially processed foods.
