Sixers seek to rekindle the magic in Orlando
Dreams of the Sixers ending another regular season with a double-digit winning streak were dashed Saturday night, as Philadelphia lost for the first time in seven games at the hands of Trae Young and the Atlanta Hawks. Fortunately, though the performance was frustrating, that setback is but a small speed bump on the team’s road to the postseason.

Philadelphia 76ers Check-In: Seventh 10 Games
Every ten games, we’ll be checking in with how the team has been playing recently, looking at trends in style of play, shifts in the rotation, etc. You can look back at past analyses: first ten games, second ten games, third ten games, fourth ten games, fifth ten games, sixth ten games. While there has curiously been as much hand-wringing as bell-ringing during this Sixers season, the team looks to be inarguably rounding into form at the right time.

Prairie View comes up short in regional playoffs
Prairie View played hard but failed to qualify for state during the regional qualifying tournament Oct. 13 at the Barnes Sports Complex in Loveland. The Thunderhawks were pitted against teams from Loveland, Legend and Pine Creek high schools in their region and played three games, winning one but losing two. The Thunderhawks fell to eventual tournament champion Legend 6-1 in the first game.
Frederick fires town manager in 3-2 vote
FREDERICK– Frederick's board of trustees voted 3-2 Tuesday night to terminate the contract of Town Manager Matt LeCerf. The motion was made by trustee Rocky Figurilli and was seconded by trustee Sam DeSantis. Trustees Figurilli, DeSantis and Rusty O'Neal voted in favor of termination. Mayor pro-tem Laura Brown and trustee Tracie Crites voted against termination. Trustee Dan March was absent from the meeting due to illness and Mayor Tony Carey only votes in the event of a tie.
Embiid injury gives Simmons chance to cement Rookie of Year
Not since Devon Sawa’s demonically possessed right hand have we seen a body part as cursed as Markelle Fultz’s right shoulder. After sidelining the rookie point guard for 68 games this season, the shoulder-in-question collided with Joel Embiid’s face Wednesday night, resulting in a concussion and fractured orbital bone for Philadelphia’s star center. Now, Embiid will undergo surgery and miss at least the rest of the regular season.
Home court would be historic achievement for 76ers
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — With Allen Iverson watching from a suite, Joel Embiid produced yet another dominant game in a season where the 76ers’ All-Star has barely practiced. Yes, Embiid is another Philly star who sits out practice. Unlike Iverson, whose complaints about practice are part of his legend, the suddenly sturdy 76ers big man takes extra rest with the full support of coach Brett Brown.
New expectations bring 76ers new benchmarks for success
After a much publicized rebuilding effort, the Philadelphia 76ers will return to the playoffs this season. They currently sit in the sixth spot in the Eastern Conference and have the easiest schedule left in the league. Home-court advantage in the first round is within their grasp. This success has come a little sooner than expected. While the stars seem ready to battle in the postseason, the supporting cast clearly wasn’t.

Ilyasova and Belinelli signings already paying off for 76ers

Ben Simmons is already scary-good at defense
Brett Brown’s young, developing Philadelphia 76ers catapulted into the playoff mix this season, thanks in large part to their defensive mastery. The Sixers currently have the fifth-best defensive rating in the league at 103.3 points per 100 possessions, and rookie sensation Ben Simmons is a crucial catalyst for their success. The 6-10 Australian newcomer often generates highlights with creative passing vision and explosive drives. He is unquestionably a must-see player on offense.
Covington and hot-shooting 76ers rout Hornets 128-114
Private citizens in Philadelphia made news this week by renting out billboards in Cleveland, trying to persuade LeBron James to play for the Philadelphia 76ers next season. You can hardly blame them; James has been the best player on the planet for roughly a dozen years. There’s enough talent on the team that adding James could mean a giant leap forward into legitimate title-contention status.

Talk of LeBron James clouding 76ers current ascent

Is LeBron James the best option for 76ers?

Joel Embiid belongs in the MVP conversation
At this point, even the most casual NBA fan knows Joel Embiid. The Philadelphia 76ers center is one of the largest players, both in terms of sheer size and personality, in the game today. He is a marketer’s dream with the social media troll game to appeal to the younger generation and the on-court game to back it up.
Can 76ers make noise in playoffs?
The Philadelphia 76ers have been playing almost as well as anyone in the NBA for nearly two months. Since Dec. 30, they’re 16-6 with a plus-8.2 net rating — both fourth-best in the league. They’re now 31-25, sitting on the No. 7 seed just two games behind the Washington Wizards for the No. 4 seed. Can the Sixers, who have been so beleaguered for so long, actually make some noise in the playoffs?
76ers Mirroring NBA's Trend Toward Globalization
Dating back to the days of David Stern and continuing under the commissionership of Adam Silver, the NBA has been committed to promoting and expanding basketball around the globe. In the modern age, the league plays regular season games in London and Mexico City, preseason games in China, and an exhibition game in Africa during the summer. This weekend’s All-Star Game will reach fans in 215 countries.
Simmons Leads Short-Handed 76ers To Come-Back Win Over Heat
Ben Simmons had a triple-double, J.J. Redick hit a crucial 19-foot, off-balanced jumper from the baseline with 19.4 seconds left and short-handed Philadelphia came back from a 24-point second-half deficit to defeat the Miami Heat 104-102 on Wednesday night. Dario Saric added 19 points and Marco Belinelli scored 17 in his first game with the 76ers, who won their fifth straight and 11th in a row on their home court.
Bryan Colangelo Continues To Mishandle Markelle Fultz
Similar to how the universe needs more Joel Embiid, the Philadelphia 76ers could use a heavier dose of their superstar center as well. Entering this season, it was nearly impossible to have confidence in Embiid’s health, and more importantly, the 76ers’ medical staff. Embiid suffered a torn meniscus in his left knee midway through the 2016-17 season, and it was unclear how long he had been playing injured.
Young Stars Give 76ers Bright Future But Poor Bench Play Clouds Present
Following Friday night’s win over Miami, the Philadelphia 76ers are back to one game over .500. They currently hold the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, and sport the eighth-best net rating in the NBA. Joel Embiid will be starting in the All-Star Game two weekends from now. Ben Simmons and Dario Saric are joining him in the Rising Stars Game two nights earlier. By most objective measures, this season has been a successful one.
76ers Surging Behind Elite Defense
Take a guess who has been the most dominant NBA team in 2018. I’m sure your mind might run through the usual list of suspects like Golden State, Houston and Toronto before you even consider the correct answer: the Philadelphia 76ers. Since you had to run to the dollar store for a new calendar to hang in the cubicle, the Sixers have the league’s best net rating.
Ben Simmons Will Be A Star -- But He Shouldn't Be An All-Star
Ben Simmons is having an outstanding rookie season for the Philadelphia 76ers and it has been a joy to watch him play basketball. I wanted to say that before the pitchfork-carrying mob marches down Broad Street and surrounds me for my next statement: I do not think he should be an All-Star this season. Before examining why, let’s address the main reason Simmons will not be an All-Star: namely, a player has to earn his stripes in the NBA before receiving that type of recognition.
Isaiah Thomas Has Struggled Mightily In Return For Cavaliers
The Cleveland Cavaliers have lost three straight games, but more importantly, are firmly behind both Boston and Toronto in the Eastern Conference standings, with even the red-hot Heat coming up quickly. Many people have remained nonplussed, confident in the fact that LeBron James will be the magical cure-all to overcome any problems the Cavaliers may have when it matters most.
Dario Saric Carving Himself Into Future 76ers Plans
The Philadelphia 76ers are riding a four-game winning streak and have settled back in at .500 on the season. Having shrugged off a recent 2-10 stretch, some attention can be refocused on how the roster should be shaped for the future. Even under the gaze of the most unbiased eyes, it’s clear the 76ers have found two foundational pieces to build their franchise around.
76ers Taking The Lead In Blowing Leads
The bandwagon for the Philadelphia 76ers appears to have broken down on the shoulder of I-95, overburdened by the weight of expectations from casual sports fans in Philadelphia and a national media eager to latch onto the new hot team. The Sixers have lost 10 of their last 12 games and are now sitting three games back of the eighth seed in a season in which the playoffs were set as a clear goal.
The First Joel Has Philadelphia Abuzz
The famous Christmas carol, “The First Noel,” is unknown in its direct origins but assumed to have originated in England sometime in the 16th century. It was first published within multiple different books of carols and hymns in the early 1800s. Now, the song is performed so frequently around the holiday season that it feels like an entirely ubiquitous and unassuming part of everyday life. However, as with many things in this world, there is more to this carol than originally meets the eye.
Joel Embiid's Workload Is Under New Management
Not long ago, people were complaining Joel Embiid wasn’t playing enough. Just last month, the big man sat out a game against the Utah Jazz (which was not part of a back-to-back), due to the familiar “load management” restrictions. This past week, however, the Philadelphia 76ers’ staff has seemingly done a complete 180-degree turn on that conservative philosophy. Tuesday night, Embiid played a career-high 39 minutes in an overtime victory over Minnesota.
LeBron Rumored To Seek New Future Sidekick -- Nerlens Noel
Together they have combined to collect three NBA championships, four Most Valuable Player Awards and 13 All-Star appearances. One of them has appeared in the NBA Finals for a remarkable seven straight seasons and you can’t pass through a news cycle without hearing either player’s place in the history of the game dissected.
Amir Johnson Providing 76ers More Than A Locker Room Presence
The Philadelphia 76ers are 12-9, sitting in fifth place in the Eastern Conference at the quarter pole of the regular season. While budding superstars Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons are rightfully receiving the majority of the credit for the team’s turnaround, it remains that — like raising a child — playing winning basketball takes a village. One of those key villagers for the 76ers has been 30-year-old big man Amir Johnson.
Joel Embiid May Be Playing Too Well For Philadelphia's Own Good
Joel Embiid is playing more than anyone expected; the Philadelphia 76ers must be thrilled. Joel Embiid is playing more than anyone expected; the Philadelphia 76ers may have a problem. Heading into Saturday’s game against Orlando, Embiid is averaging 29.3 minutes per game, up from 25.4 in his rookie season.
East Vs West No Longer A One-Sided NBA Battle
On Thursday night, the Boston Celtics topped the Golden State Warriors 92-88, a result that not only snapped Golden State’s seven-game winning streak, but also extended Boston’s league-best winning streak to 14 games. After the win, there was a lot of (rightful) fawning about how well the Celtics are playing, especially in regard to their stifling defense that sits at an NBA-best 95.4 points allowed per 100 possessions.
Monstars Unit Squashing The Competition For 76ers
In a league trending toward downsized lineups, one of the presumed challenges for the Philadelphia 76ers was how to maximize a roster featuring three core pieces 6-foot-10 or taller: Joel Embiid, Ben Simmons and Dario Saric. However, as Sam Hinkie once aptly recognized, “a competitive league like the NBA necessitates a zig while our competitors comfortably zag.” Rather than view an abundance of size as a problem, the 76ers have made it a feature, not a bug.
76ers Have Become A Must-See Show
Entering play Friday night, the Philadelphia 76ers were riding a three-game winning streak and sat at .500 for the first time since November 2013. The seeds planted in Sam Hinkie’s orchard have grown into strong, young saplings. Ben Simmons has emerged as the clear Rookie of the Year frontrunner, putting up early-career stats comparable to a young Oscar Robertson or LeBron James.
Joel Embiid Takes Care Of Himself But Needs To Take Care Of The Ball
Following an offseason of wild anticipation, things haven’t unfolded as the Philadelphia 76ers hoped in the first week and a half of the season. The Sixers have started 1-4, and Markelle Fultz is the latest subject in the ever-growing string of injury-related public relations fiascos from upper management. Still, the team has experienced some bright spots amid the bum shoulders and last-minute defeats.
Ben Simmons A Bright Spot In Slow Start For 76ers
After an offseason brimming with anticipation, the Philadelphia 76ers are 0-2 and bandwagon fans in the city are wondering where to find the playoff team they were promised if they started paying attention to basketball again. Instead, Markelle Fultz seems afraid to shoot a jumper and Joel Embiid seems incapable of making one at the moment (0-10 from 3 on the season).
Simmons And Fultz Can't Be Just Supporting Characters In Embiid's World
Understandably, any talk regarding the Philadelphia 76ers lately has centered around Joel Embiid. His last week alone has provided a season’s worth of storylines for the typical NBA player. Monday, he signed a designated rookie max extension for five years, $148 million, with a prior injury clause considered to be part of the most complicated deal in NBA history.
JJ Redick Poised To Make A Huge Impact In Philadelphia
Even the most ardent supporters of The Process would admit that watching Philadelphia 76ers basketball in recent years was often an arduous slog. In a league where outside shooting has become increasingly vital to both success on the scoreboard and the aesthetic of the game, the Sixers were decidedly ill-equipped to compete. Over the previous four seasons, the highest Philadelphia finished in 3-point percentage was 24th, never shooting better than 34 percent.
Ben Simmons Confident In Second Crack At Rookie Season
One of the great reasons to follow the NBA is the number of subplot-based undercurrents that run through the season. Russell Westbrook making sure to sign the largest contract in NBA history on Kevin Durant’s birthday cements his place as first-team All-Petty (this is a compliment, by the way).
Why You Should Watch The 76ers In 2017-18
Much like “Always Sunny in Philadelphia”‘s Charlie Kelly, the NBA team in the City of Brotherly Love is the ultimate wild card heading into the 2017-18 season. Mirroring franchise centerpiece Joel Embiid, season-long outcomes for the Philadelphia 76ers arguably have as wide a gap as any team in the league. Outside of a handful of superteams, few rivals can match the Sixers for the sheer talent they’re capable of presenting on a given night.
Time Running Out For Jahlil Okafor In Philadelphia
For those unfamiliar with the Netflix original series “BoJack Horseman,” the theme of the most recent season involved BoJack’s family motto, “Time’s arrow neither stands still nor reverses.
NBA Lottery Reform Will Change Perceptions But Not Reality
Since replacing David Stern as NBA commissioner in February of 2014, Adam Silver has largely been viewed as a progressive leader for the league. He swiftly expelled Donald Sterling when the former Los Angeles Clippers owner’s racist comments became public. Silver has come out in favor of legalizing sports betting, feeling it’s the inevitable path of professional sports.
Why The Joel Embiid Extension Matters
Anyone who peruses NBA salary cap tables knows that the biggest off-court question for the Philadelphia 76ers concerns a Joel Embiid contract extension. Discussions kicked into overdrive in the sports mediasphere this week thanks to Sportsradio 94WIP’s Howard Eskin. He stated on air that Embiid’s agent, CAA Sports’ Leon Rose, wants a new deal for his client before the big man will participate in 5-on-5 activity.
Dario Saric still a critical piece for 76ers development
When a player finishes second in NBA Rookie of the Year voting, he will often be the most-hyped young player on the team heading into his sophomore season. However, Dario Saric has flown under the radar by comparison on a young, up-and-coming Philadelphia 76ers roster with last year’s consensus “top rookie” Joel Embiid, and the last two No. 1 picks in Ben Simmons and Markelle Fultz.
