A Sudden Liberating Thought
I live in a basement; a result of having come down in the world, in every sense. My room has only one window, and only the upper part of it is above pavement level; causing me to see the world outside from below. It’s not a very big world, but it often feels big enough. I see only the legs and lower parts of the passersby on the pavement on my side of the street, but having lived here for four years, I can tell whom they belong to in most cases.

Today’s selection is by Kjell Askildsen presented by Stranger’s Guide Editor in Chief, Kira Brunner Don.
Obituary: Alan Mace (1929-2024)
Alan Victor Patrick Mace peacefully passed from this life to the next in his Teignmouth home last October, aged 95. Alan was born in Norwich in 1929, but grew up in Thundersley, Essex. At 14 he attended art college, where he learned his trade as a sign-writer. At 16 he met a certain Wendy Nutt on the bus home. Their friendship led to a courtship and then marriage in 1951. In the Stories of Kjell Askildsen, Stasis and Revelation Intertwine
The narratives of "Everything Like Before," only the second book by the Norwegian writer to be published in the US, bend toward the seemingly mundane, then sting with an act that might (or might not) change everything. Kjell Askildsen, winner of the Swedish Academy’s Nordic Prize in 2009, is a consummate chronicler of contradictory, quicksilver emotions and impulses.
Sunhat, an excerpt from Everything Like Before
Photograph by Matthew Murdoch / Flickr They sat reading. Neither of them had spoken for a while, when she suddenly said: “When we go to Yugoslavia I’m going to get one of those sunhats I didn’t buy myself last year.” “What page are you on?” he asked. “Thirty-three. Why?” “Just wondering.” She did not say any more and continued reading. For reasons he did not understand he found himself thinking about an exchange he had heard the previous night through the open window.
