What vet practices need to know
Back to blog list 2025 marks 50 years since the formation of the Federation of Veterinarians of Europe (FVE). Sean Wensley, BVA Past President and former Chair of the FVE Animal Welfare Working Group, writes on the organisation’s important role in the One Health-One Welfare agenda in Europe. Last month, the Federation of Veterinarians of Europe (FVE) hailed a landmark agreement by the European Parliament and European Council to introduce EU-wide rules to protect cats and dogs.
The veterinary voice for animal welfare: reflecting on BVA’s updated Animal Welfare Strategy
Good lives for animals Recognition of animal sentience – that animals can consciously experience feelings that matter to them, such as fear and enjoyment - underpins a veterinary and broader societal aspiration that animals used for human benefit should experience a good life and a humane death.
Prioritising the welfare of non-traditional companion animals
Back to blog list The welfare of non-traditional companion animals (NTCAs) has long been a concern for many vets. In this blog, BVA Past President and Chair of the Working Group Sean Wensley talks through BVA’s new NTCA policy position. The welfare of non-traditional companion animals (NTCAs; also called ‘exotic pets’) is a recurring concern of veterinary professionals.
Through A Vet's Eyes by Dr Sean Wensley, Miranda Krestovnikoff
Dr Sean Wensley, Miranda Krestovnikoff Press Reviews A compelling account of the trials, tribulations and triumphs of life as a vet - and a lesson to us all on how we should treat the animals with which we share our lives. -- Stephen Moss, naturalist and author of THE ROBIN: A BIOGRAPHY Over the years as a vet, I have experienced many of the same situations, challenges and feelings that Sean reflects on in this incredible book.
Driving evidence‐based improvements for the UK's ‘Stressed. Lonely. Overweight. Bored. Aggressive. Misunderstood…but loved’ companion animals
Abstract Background: The Five Welfare Needs in UK animal welfare legislation underpin a legal duty of care and are an animal welfare assessment framework. Health and welfare problems arise when these needs are unmet. The veterinary professions work with others to address these problems, but there is no publicly funded U.K. companion animal welfare surveillance to identify priorities, or promote and monitor change.

Taking action on UK welfare priorities
Taking action on UK welfare priorities Sean Wensley, former BVA president 490 Antrim Road, Belfast BT15 5GF email: wensley.sean{at}pdsa.org.uk Statistics from Altmetric.com It was excellent, and poignant, to see that the results from the Animal Welfare Foundation-funded study of UK animal welfare priorities had been published in a peer-review paper in Vet Record.1 Among the four distinguished authors was lead author Fiona Rioja-Lang; a good friend and colleague who tragically died in 2019,...

Breeding change - vets and vet nurses tackling root cause animal welfare problems
For as long as humans have used animals – for transport, food, sport, companionship and more – we have recognised the benefits of breeding from the best suited naturally occurring individuals. Whether selecting for behavioural traits, such as herding, guarding or fighting, or physical attributes such as strength, speed or growth rate, artificial selection – as distinct from natural selection – has sought to make animals increasingly useful across successive generations.
One Health Week: Augmented reality, One Health for the real world
One Health is, at its heart, about joining forces to tackle the world’s big problems. Climate change, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), the fair treatment of animals and producers, food security and unprecedented biodiversity loss are all amongst the issues that need co-ordinated, expert global responses. Good health and wellbeing for people and sentient animals is the central goal.
#ChooseAssured - voting for animal welfare at checkouts
There’s a saying that our meals give us three votes every day. Each time we exchange our money for food, we give our clearest possible support for its desirability and provenance: “This is something I want; I am happy with the way it has been produced and I am directly funding you to continue.” Recognising ourselves as influential citizens rather than passive consumers can change the future of our food system.

Government's U-turn on welfare codes
Sean Wensley, the BVA President, writes: BVA acknowledges the concerns raised in the letter from past-presidents of the British Veterinary Poultry Association (BVPA), and similar discussions were held at the BVA Council meeting on April 13. However, far from setting back the cause of animal welfare, we feel our actions have held Defra to account on an important animal welfare issue in which the profession has a strong interest.
