Measurement has never mattered more
5 best practices to excel at L&D measurement in remote and hybrid work. by Tom Griffiths June 8, 2022 Measuring learning has always been important, but in today’s remote and hybrid workplaces, it’s essential. You can develop, design and deliver the best training programs, but if you can’t show stakeholders across the organization that it actually “worked,” then you’re missing a crucial part of the story.
Two years on: What have we learned from hybrid learning?
These behavioral science-backed practices can help leaders build a hybrid learning approach that maximizes impact for everyone thrust into a world of remote working and hybrid learning. by Sebastian Bailey June 7, 2022 Agile and flexible working is non-negotiable. Employees are likely to quit if they don’t get it. We’re also in a massive skills shortage, with CEOs rating it as one of the top five risks to their business.
How (and why) leaders can (and should) leverage the power of visual thinking
The ability to see the world through the lens of others — as well as the ability to enable others to understand what’s going on in our mind — is among the greatest challenges that leaders face. by Todd Cherches May 27, 2022 One of the biggest challenges all leaders face is getting others to “see” what they’re saying. And one of the most powerful and effective ways of successfully achieving this objective is by leveraging the power of visual thinking and visual communication.
Use Buddies To Accelerate New Hires' Performance
With the mixed US job data this week, the challenge of how organizations get value from their new starters as quickly as possible is a big issue. Apparently it takes a new hire three months to reach break-even point, when they add as much value as they consume. The first few months of a new job are all about reducing uncertainty; newcomers not only have to learn skills to meet the demands of their role, they must also figure out the cultural norms of their new workplace.
How To Beat The Five Killers Of Virtual Working
In a previous post I asked the question: does working from home work? The answer from a Chinese company was a resounding yes. Home workers were 13% more productive, happier in their jobs and less likely to leave than their office-bound peers. Virtual working saves money, is better for the environment and gives staff the flexibility they crave, so it’s no wonder that more and more organisations are encouraging it. Let’s Get Lateral
Of all the concerns keeping CEOs awake at night, finding and keeping talent reigns supreme. Human capital emerged as the primary challenge facing leaders in Development Dimensions International and The Conference Board’s 2014-15 Global Leadership Forecast — ranking above customer relationships, innovation or operational excellence. But only 27 percent of more than 13,000 leaders consider themselves “very prepared” to address it. Outside hires rarely solve the problem.
Inclusion Begins With Understanding The Self
In my last blog post I explained why many Diversity and Inclusion initiatives fail: because they focus on diversity at a corporate level in terms of demographics, and don’t address inclusion at an individual level, which is key to realizing the benefits of diverse teams. Whether for a large organization or a start up, creating a culture of inclusion helps individuals feel psychologically safe, which is linked to greater innovation, productivity and retention.
Hey Managers: It’s OK Not To Be Liked
The main reason people leave a company is because of their boss. But it’s also the main reason why they stay, learn, grow and make extra effort. Getting this relationship right is an essential part of being an effective manager. “Managing ourselves is tough enough these days,” said Soni Basi, vice president, global talent at The Estée Lauder Cos. Inc.

Can You Catch Rudeness Like A Cold?
Be wary of airport gates, security lines, and taxi queues, because it seems that, like a cold, rude behavior can be contagious. Research has shown that when managers feel they are being treated unfairly they pass this mistreatment onto their own employees. Even low-level, minor negative behaviors can spread.
Wanted: Employees With Grit
Some people seem to have all the luck. They land the enviable job. They fly over life’s hurdles while others get stuck, and overcome obstacles to achieve remarkable things. Although their peers have equal intelligence and similar opportunities, they might not fare as well in life. Why? Brains aren’t everything. The answer to this type of success might lie in possession of another trait: grit.
A Pen by Sebastian Bailey
You can apply CSS to your Pen from any stylesheet on the web. Just put a URL to it here and we'll apply it, in the order you have them, before the CSS in the Pen itself. If the stylesheet you link to has the file extension of a preprocessor, we'll attempt to process it before applying. You can also link to another Pen here, and we'll pull the CSS from that Pen and include it.
The Generational Divide
With their supposedly short attention spans, job-hopping tendencies and sense of entitlement, millennials have been subject to much disparagement in recent years - summed up in a recent Saturday Night Live skit featuring Miley Cyrus. How best to manage the millennials is up for debate, but what about their Generation [...]
Is Your Dogmatic Leader Suffocating Innovation?
Despite grand commitments to innovation, many large and established organizations are sluggish when it comes to change. It's easy to blame processes and red tape for the lack of agility, but a large part of the problem is down to culture. On a day to day basis, is innovation encouraged [...]
How To Get The Best From Your Extra-milers
In teams, not all members are made equal. Certain individuals try harder, speak up, help others and generally go beyond the call of duty. These 'extra milers' are gold-dust when it comes to creating a high-performance culture ; not only do they produce more (research estimates that the top 5% [...]
The Hidden Source Of Energy At Work
Businesses are investing in ever-more exotic ways to increase employee wellbeing and stave off burnout - from free gym memberships and massages to onsite juice bars, healthy eating seminars and even sleep pods in the office. It's no coincidence that as the pace of work gets more frenetic, outside of [...]
'One Team' To Rule Them All
How do you get people to collaborate across a business - to operate as 'One Team'? Given that deep expertise is what differentiates one organization from the rest, more and more businesses are switching from a regional structure to a functional one, in which expert functions call the shots. But [...]
True Grit: Why It Matters And How To Increase It
Top rugby coaches are being drafted into schools in the UK to teach kids ‘grit and resilience’, as a means of strengthening kids’ character and, presumably, preparing them for the real world. But what does grit actually mean? We associate it with dogged determination; gritting one’s teeth and forging ahead no matter what. But actually, it’s more complex than that. Grit is about the sustained, passionate pursuit of a long-term goal.
The Huge Value Of Mindfulness At Work: An Interview With Ellen Langer
This article is more than 8 years old. Mindfulness has been shown to reduce stress, increase charisma, and improve sales . Ellen Langer, a professor of Psychology at Harvard University, is perhaps its chief proponent. Her landmark work ‘Mindfulness’, started a movement which is becoming ubiquitous in our schools and workplaces. In this interview, Langer explains why it’s worth cultivating a mindful organization and some of the steps to get there. Sebastian Bailey: What is mindfulness?
How To Beat The Bias Against Women As Leaders
The revelation by the New York Times last month that in the S&P 1500 there are more CEOs named John than there are women neatly sums up what we all already know: the glass ceiling is as solid as ever. Diversity targets are one way to influence the demographics of executive boards, but quotas won’t address the underlying bias against women as leaders .
What's Stopping Your Team Going The Extra Mile?
‘My kids have just thrown up and three planes have broken. We’ve now been delayed two days. This is a nightmare. The worst thing is the airline staff don’t seem to care.’ This is the message I got from a colleague when bad weather and broken machinery had left him and his family stranded. It’s the opposite of what business leaders want, which is for their team to ‘go the extra mile’ and deliver great service whatever the weather .
Emotional Intelligence Predicts Job Performance: The 7 Traits That Help Managers Relate
The evidence that Emotional intelligence is a better predictor of workplace performance than IQ is clear . The problem is that no-one can agree what it is about EI that actually makes the difference to performance, until now. A recent study published in the Journal of Applied Psychology looked at the results of 36 separate pieces of research into the relationship between self-reported EI and job performance (measured via supervisor ratings), with an overall data set from 2,168 employed adults.
Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk: A Novel - Kindle edition by Ben Fountain. Mystery, Thriller & Suspense Kindle eBooks @ Amazon.com.
When I first heard about this book (and Karl Marlantes' blurb), I assumed it was written by a veteran - it isn't, and that's really amazing, because this is a pitch-perfect look into a soldier's experiences.I say that as a veteran (of Desert Storm) and an embedded journalist in Iraq in 2007-09, so I have some first-hand knowledge with what he describes. To me, the voices and actions of the characters are dead-on accurate. It's got some flaws, which I'll get to first so I can finish strong.
How To Get Results With Visualization
Visualization is the poster child for positive thinking : we’ve all heard stories about how visualizing their swing helps golfers reduce their handicap, or mentally picturing training boosts athletes’ performance. There are stories of how visualization can improve pitching ideas and ace key-note presentations. But is it all it’s cracked up to be?
Why Do Unfair Bosses Make Stronger Teams?
Ask three people to describe their most horrible boss and chances are the topic of fairness will arise more than once. A manager’s erratic behavior, favoritism or downright rudeness are some of the strongest reasons for people to dislike and leave their job, while a fair boss equals happier and more committed employees, right?
5 Ways to End Procrastination Now
“Never put off till tomorrow what may be done the day after tomorrow,” quipped Mark Twain. Waiting until later is one of life’s guilty secrets, but chronic procrastination is linked to poorer health, work and relationship outcomes. Thankfully there are some straightforward ways to put off putting-off, and the way you think about a task can impact your desire to get it done.
Who Makes A Better Leader: A Man Or A Woman?
In 2012, women held just 3.8% of Chief Executive Officer positions in Fortune 500 companies, and 90 out of 535 seats in US Congress. Much has been written about why women are so severely underrepresented in senior leadership – from poor childcare provisions to institutional bias. One thing researchers can’t agree on is whether there are fewer women leaders because they’re less effective at the job, or because society expects them to be.
Are Your Top Performers Picked On?
This article is more than 10 years old. New research suggests that top performers often feel hidden abuse. If you're trying to attract or retain great people, whether in a start-up or established business, this is troubling. A study in a US financial services company asked supervisors to rate their employees’ performance. Meanwhile employees reported how often they’d been a target of various types of victimization over the last 30 days.
