Last spring, the Alabama Legislature passed the Distressed Institutions of Higher Education Revolving Loan Program Act with a unanimous vote in the Senate and a supermajority in the House. It has educated many of the business, civic, and governmental leaders throughout our state for decades. That’s one reason it would be a tragedy of the highest order if we lose it.
J. Richmond Pearson's legacy of upholding justice will live on: guest opinion
Judge J. Richmond Pearson often towered above many people he encountered on the streets of Birmingham. When he sat on the bench in his Jefferson County courtroom, his booming voice punctuated with precise diction and authority caused lawyers - seasoned and rookies - to pause and pay attention. He had an undeniable presence. Judge Pearson passed away in the early hours on Thursday, October 23. His presence and his legacy, however, will remain with us forever.
