NFL 2026-2027: Week 4
September 29, 2026, 2:44pm 1 In Week 3, Atlanta destroyed the Pack on Thursday, and the undefeated Bills kept the Chargers winless. The Browns won their second straight, while the Colts got their first win at the expense of Houston, who is 0-3. Titans are also without a win, as are the Rays, who lost their QB Baker Mayfield to a thumb injury. Commanders got their first win while handing Seattle their first loss, and the Ravens won a thriller over the Boys in Rio.
SDMB Fantasy Football DYNASTY League: Year 18
Welcome back to year 18 in one of the oldest dynasty leagues in the world. Fortunately it would appear that we will have no ownership changes this year so another year of stability. League Dates Hall of Fame Game opened preseason on July 31 Cuts be due either Mon Aug 24 at 12 noon eastern or Aug 30 at 7pm eastern, pending discussion and a vote. I will address this later. Draft begins 1 minute after the cut deadline, depending on where we set it.
Is the Modern Economy Pushing Ordinary People Toward Gambling?
June 18, 2026, 9:40pm 1 I’m curious what others think about a trend I’ve been noticing. It seems like the wealth gap is widening rapidly. People with education, professional careers, and access to investment opportunities are accumulating significant wealth through stocks, equity compensation, and other assets. Meanwhile, wages for many hourly and blue-collar workers have not kept pace with rising living costs.
Obsession [2025 Film], open spoilers
So I’m a month late but saw it in theaters tonight to a surprisingly packed theater. It’s apparently getting incredible word of mouth because it’s still packing a relatively low traffic theater a month later. It is an excellent movie. I won’t see it again. Whether you’d enjoy it is: Are you okay with being uncomfortable? And I guess if you want to see a horror film, you are.
Game giveaway
Over the years I have accumulated game keys from various games I don’t need (usually because I already have it). Most of these keys are for steam, if not I’ll note it. I’m not just going to post them openly or some bots will snatch up the keys immediately, so I’m going to ask people to PM me lists of games they want. List them in order of preference, list the games you want most first. I’ll try to distribute them fairly.
The hidden price of free
Netflix has a $17 tier where you get an ad free version of their streaming service. They also offer a reduced cost $8 tier where you have to watch 12 or 13 minutes of ads per hour. When people select a subscription, they’re choosing: what’s more important, my time and attention or $9? So let’s examine that decision. Let’s say the average Netflix subscriber watches 1 hour a day of Netflix. I think you’ll agree that’s a reasonable number and quite possibly conservative.
"Something went wrong, try again later"
May 20, 2026, 10:09am 1 This is a rant about the trend in user interface design to make error messages vague to the point of being unusable. I decided last week that I felt like going to Sonic to eat. If your immediate reaction to that is “well there’s your problem”, fuck you, you snob ass motherfucker, it’s just a concrete example. People are allowed to eat cheap burgers.
Midjourney image/video creation tool
Midjourney is an AI based image and video generation tool. I’ve recently subscribed to it and it’s genuinely one of the most fun creative tools I have ever seen in my life. I’m having a blast with it. I want to state up front that this isn’t a thread for the discussion of “AI slop” or whether can be a tool to create art or any of that. Here is a better place for that kind of discussion.
Are Democratic voters more motivated to vote for something or against something?
March 31, 2026, 4:11pm 1 The biggest Democratic victory in recent history was 2008, when there was a charismatic black candidate to vote for, a history-making guy. (Of course, Bush and his cronies were very much a legacy to vote against. So that election was a combination of D’s both voting for something and against something.) In 2020, there was very high D turnout, and it wasn’t because Biden was a magnificent guy, it was because Trump was awful.
Project Hail Mary post release thread (open spoilers)
Project Hail Mary is one of my favorite lighter reading, page turner books. I was worried they were going to screw the movie up, and I’m happy to say they didn’t. It was actually a really faithful adaptation. They even spent an appropriate (fairly long) amount of time on the first contact communication struggles. Of course after they advanced past that point, they quickly moved into the super easy communication stage, but the book did that too if I recall correctly.
Would a jetpack actually be useful in war?
February 5, 2026, 12:35am 1 I watched The Rocketeer again a few days ago, and I got me wondering if a jetpack would actually be a useful item in WW2, or even in today’s military?
Fixed wing vs rotary wing - Pilot’s position
On older helicopters the collective levers (that control blade pitch on the main rotor) were shared between the seats and located physically in the center of the aircraft. Most pilots prefer that the cyclic, which tends to need more complex and frequent adjustments, can be used with their right hand, so having the collective in your left hand and cyclic in your right hand meant the pilot would generally sit on the right.
One of the signs of the great sickness of our society is that news and current event comedians are more honest and more real about what’s going on than any sort of news station or anyone else is in the mainstream public discourse
January 29, 2026, 7:38pm 1 Very emotional bit here by Jimmy Kimmel on the Alex Pretti murder: I watch very little TV news (only when clips make the sdmb or reddit, basically) and not much more in terms of talk shows or other sort of current events entertainment on TV. So I may be wrong about this. But I used to watch more TV and I suspect it’s only worse since years ago.
A House of Dynamite (2025) contains no actual dilemma and makes no sense
I expected to really like this movie, because I have an amateur interest in nuclear doctrine / strategy and because I like movies where people are forced to make decisions that are really too big for any one person to handle, so it’s right up my alley. But the movie lacks a central dilemma and the one it tries to create is false and makes no sense. I’m not going to nitpick the technical details or decisions made in the movie, but rather the structure of the story itself.
Moderation in the Minnesota shooting thread
January 28, 2026, 4:18am 1 This isn’t going to be like a mod pitting, I’m not admonishing or being hostile, I’m just trying to be helpful, but since I was noted in that thread that to say anything at all about the relevance of something being in a thread rather than a hijack to take it to ATMB instead, here I am. I get what you’re going for.
Should SNL be going after the current presidential administration more harshly?
January 25, 2026, 10:07am 1 (This could fit into any one of a few other forums; I will not be surprised if it gets moved.) This is a big topic on the Saturday Night Live subreddit. The show’s “cold open” (the first sketch of the night, before the opening credits) is very often politically oriented. Given the headlines these days, many viewers are frustrated that the ones involving Trump are (by their opinion) going too easy on him and effectively downplaying the evil of his actions.
NFL Week 15
December 9, 2025, 2:42pm 1 The Steelers notched a huge win in Baltimore to move back into first in the AFC North, thanks to a ruling that a touchdown wasn’t actually a touchdown. The Saints upset the Bucs which allowed the Panthers to tie Tampa Bay for the lead in the NFC South. Buffalo used a 4th-quarter comeback to beat Cincy, which put a severe damper on the playoff hopes of the Bengals. Detroit won a shootout over the Boys, and Miami stayed alive with a win over the Jets.
Arc Raiders
Arc Raiders is a PVPVE extraction game that released 2 weeks and a half weeks ago. It has been wildly successful peaking at 700,000+ players regularly on steam and growing in addition people playing on console. The premise is that the ARC, killer robots, have taken control of the surface of the Earth and that remnants of humanity are forced into an underground city, scavenging on the surface to acquire gear before extracting back down underground with it.
How high would Watergate rank if it were a Trump scandal?
November 17, 2025, 7:36pm 1 Let’s say that something like Watergate happened, exactly down to details, in the Trump presidency - a break-in, a cover-up, etc. Something bad enough to topple Nixon. Out of all the countless Trump misdeeds, where would it rank in terms of badness? Somewhere in the top 1/4 of bad things, or even just only in the middle?
The consequences if ACA subsidies go away permanently
3 So my understanding is that it’s the enhanced subsidies, enacted during COVID, that are going away, not ACA subsidies in general. There are still the baseline subsidies that exist when the law went into effect, including the cost sharing reductions, as well as the original ACA tax credits for premiums.
Pluribus (New Vince Gilligan show on AppleTV)
Open spoilers – anything that has been available to stream will be open for discussion. Created by Breaking Bad / Better Call Saul creator Vince Gilligan and starring Rhea Seehorn, the premise of the show is “The most miserable person on Earth must save the world from happiness.” The first two episodes are available for streaming now. The schedule says they’ll be released on Fridays, though these two episodes were apparently available Thursday night and I’m not sure if that will continue.
JD Vance, Usha Vance, and Erika Kirk
This may shock you, but MAGA is not terribly fond of brown people or non-Christians even when they have republican/MAGA cred. For example, Vivek Ramaswamy, a recent republican presidential candidate and candidate for governor of Ohio went to a Turning Point rally and the MAGA audience made it clear that there’s no room for people with kooky brown people religions in their party. He wished everyone a Happy Diwali and got a disgusting but unsurprising response.
Battlefield 6
October 11, 2025, 12:32pm 1 Battlefield 6 launched yesterday and seems to be a huge hit with about 750,000 concurrent players on steam (which isn’t the only PC platform to get it from) which is a huge launch. People are claiming it’s a return to form as a peak battlefield game comparable to BF3 and I think I agree. It’s modern day (technically 2027) so the weapons are pretty familiar though the story with the warring factions is a little silly – not that it matters.
Why are European apartment doors built like bank vaults?
October 2, 2025, 6:17pm 1 Just moved to Europe from the US and have been thinking about something I’ve noticed on previous visits: The doors. Our apartment door could probably stop a police battering ram as well as high-powered rifle fire. The deadbolts come out of at least two sides (I haven’t examined the top). You have to turn the key seven times to unlock it. Why? Crime, especially violent crime, is so much lower here.
QAnon Shaman claims to be the rightful president
September 30, 2025, 12:19am 1 At this point, I say might as well give him a try. Arizona resident Jacob Chansley, better known to America as the QAnon shaman who stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 in a striking horned warrior outfit, is suing a host of entities – including the federal government and President Donald Trump – for $40 trillion. In the process, the Phoenix resident is claiming that he is the rightful leader of the United States.
"Unconditional Surrender"
August 15, 2025, 8:32pm 1 A spinoff from the justified-A-Bomb discussion: Think it was January 1943 that FDR said the Allies expected “Unconditional Surrender” from the Axis. Later, he said it wasn’t a considered statement – that Grant’s famous phrase popped into his head and he liked the sound of it. Was that true, far as anyone knows? Does everyone now agree that it was a bad idea to say it?
SDMB Fantasy Football DYNASTY League: Year 17
Welcome back everyone to what must be one of the longest running dynasty leagues in the world. League Dates Preseason Began July 7 Cuts due by Sunday August 24 at noon eastern. Draft begins at 12:01pm eastern NFL Season opener: Thursday Sep 4 Trade deadline is until the playoffs begin. I will set the yahoo trade date to the latest possible date, but it will cut us off somewhere around week 12 or 13. After that, we can still make trades manually using PMs and announcing them in the thread.
What level of humidity should I expect from an evaporative humidifier?
I live in Las Vegas and my bedroom is typically somewhere around 22-24% relative humidity at around 25c. The house has central AC of course and AC-dried air is blown into my room. I get some issues with how dry it is (my post-lasik vision improves when I’m in a humid climate because my eyes are too dry for example) and decided to try a humidifier.
Why is Epstein the scandal that has stuck, and why now?
July 29, 2025, 11:47am 1 Trump has done and said a thousand things that were so horrific that any other political figure in our lifetimes would’ve ended their career had they done any of them. He does things that are so stupid, and so evil, with such regularity that the news just lets them fly by, only covering the latest horrific scandal for a few hours or perhaps a few days before the next one comes along. And of course his cult doesn’t care about any of it. Water off a duck’s back.
Trump is making a deal with Ghislane Maxwell to exonerate him and accuse his enemies
July 26, 2025, 1:27am 1 The Epstein files scandal seems to finally be something that’s gaining some traction against Trump. They can usually just do something even stupider, more evil, and more outrageous and have their latest scandal vanish as everyone focuses on the new one, but even a significant fraction of MAGA seems pretty pissed off about this one. And so… You’re all probably aware that the Department of Justice is talking to Ghislane Maxwell.
CBS is ending ‘The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’ next year
July 17, 2025, 11:57pm 1 Posting here because there is no way this isn’t politically motivated: CNN – 17 Jul 25 In a shocking move, CBS is ending “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” next year, potentially exiting the late-night television business altogether. CBS, however, said in a statement that “this is purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night.
Are there non-ICE agents acting like ICE agents?
July 11, 2025, 6:24am 1 On reddit and in a few opinion pieces in media, I’ve seen people say or speculate that a lot of the people who are claiming to be ICE are not actually employed by ICE and are impersonating them (or perhaps deputized in some way?), ranging from bounty hunters to proud boy types. Among these same sources it’s suggested that there’s some sort of bounty on illegals (which often just ends up being brown people). I’ve heard $1500 specifically quoted.
Stock futures significantly lower post Liberation day tariffs
6 Question: If, with no intent to profit, a political figure makes a false statement designed to keep the market from having an extremely bad day, Is that manipulation even illegal? I don’t know, but I don’t think it matters. For two reasons: There is no way in hell trump and company aren’t profiteering by front running the news they’re creating. Which is most sincerely positively absolutely illegal. The concept of “illegal” becomes meaningless once there is no, or only corrupt, enforcement.
Planning a trip to Spain and Portugal
March 27, 2025, 10:50am 1 As per this thread I might be interested in moving to Spain or Portugal, so I’m booking a trip to check them out to see how I feel about them. So it will be part vacation, part scouting trip. The time table is flexible but I’m expecting to spend maybe 3 weeks there, which could be extended a week or two. I will be arriving around Apr 20. Things I like: natural beauty, particularly with water. Beaches. Scenic road trips. Trying new foods. Bar hopping.
Foodguessr web game
I just found Foodguessr which is basically the food version of geoguessr. It gives you a picture, the ingredients, and a description of a dish, and you have to guess where it originated. If you’re wrong, it tells you how close you are (from hot to cold), and gives you a general direction of the right answer. I’ve only played 2 games so far but I’ve been doing surprisingly well despite not recognizing the specific dish.
Investment general discussion thread
March 5, 2025, 6:24pm 1 There have been some threads lately concerned about what people should do with their investments in light of recent… instability as well as some politics prediction threads revolving around performance of the economy in which people start discussing investment strategy. So I thought it might be a good idea to start a thread for any sort of investment discussion.
Trump's disgusting shakedown of Zelensky
February 28, 2025, 7:52pm 1 I know. There are other Trump threads. If this feels redundant, shut it down. But there are occasionally moments so over the fucking top that I feel like they deserve their own separate discussion. BBC article with video. It took me 15 minutes to watch the video because I had to stop every 20 or 30 seconds because I was so fucking embarrassed, horrified, and disgusted. Every aspect of it is fucking horrific.
The Trump Recession
7 Another thought that crossed my mind is the question of who moves the markets. As the most important stock markets with the highest capitalization are in the USA, which is also the richest nation on Earth, and knowing that a very small proportion of people hold most of the wealth, and considering that those multi-billionaires are purportedly set to gain the most (at least in the short(-sighted)) term, from the temper tanTrump’s economic policies, what do you think they are doing?
New executive order seizes complete control of all regulatory agencies, interpretation of law
However, previous administrations have allowed so-called “independent regulatory agencies” to operate with minimal Presidential supervision. These regulatory agencies currently exercise substantial executive authority without sufficient accountability to the President, and through him, to the American people. Moreover, these regulatory agencies have been permitted to promulgate significant regulations without review by the President.
Opinions on places in the world for Americans to retire to cheaply
February 17, 2025, 10:30am 1 I’m interested in ideas of where an American might move for a retirement visa and presumably spend the rest of my life. I’m going to be a bit vague on personal details, but I’m only about 40 and so I realize I’m not exactly retirement age, it would be hard to practice my job in other countries. There are language/cultural issues and licensure issues that would make things complicated.
Please stop using the phrase "In this economy"
January 15, 2025, 6:02pm 1 I am really getting infuriated with this. Economies are not binary. They are not simply “good” or “bad.” Competent viewers of society should understand that in “this economy”, 2025, probably most of the people in the USA, there has been a big difference in recent times between the unemployment rate and the inflation rate.
Severance Season 2 [OPEN SPOILERS]
On January 17, after almost three full years, we get Severance season 2 on Apple TV. Season 1 thread I just re-watched the first season because it’s been so long since the previous one that I forgot some details and you may want to do that yourselves in the days we have until the season 2 premiere. At least the last couple of episodes. It looks like season two will be 10 episodes long (Season 1 was 9 which is a bit odd). Apple’s website has the first 8 minutes of the new season up on their website.
Marvel Rivals
Marvel Rivals is a just released f2p Marvel 6v6 hero shooter game – basically Marvel Overwatch. I have grown so sick of the whole Marvel universe after it has saturated the last 10 years of all media more than anything ever has before, so I was predisposed to dislike this game, but to my surprise it’s actually really good. I tend to think people use the word “clone” overly broadly to describe games in the same genre or that are chasing the same trend. However, it fits in this case.
Do you feel guilty about taking advantage of loss leader deals for small businesses?
December 1, 2024, 2:14am 1 So there’s a bar down the street from me that has really good pizza and after midnight it’s half off. I was really craving some pizza late at night, so I headed over and ordered a 14" supreme (taking home half of it). Their prices are already quite low, so what was normally a $17 pizza became an $8.50 one. There’s no way they’re making money off selling a large supreme pizza for $8.50, it’s just meant to get people in the door and have a few beers while they’re there.
NFL 2024-25: Week 5
October 1, 2024, 5:27pm 1 Last week the Bengals and Titans got their first wins, while the Steelers, Seahawks, and Bills suffered their first losses. The surprising Commanders are 3-1, and the Broncos beat the Jets in the rain while passing for only 60 yards. The Chiefs won another one-score game to remain undefeated, and the Vikings are also still unbeaten. Joe Flacco (Joe Flacco?) came off the bench to pilot the Colts to their win over Pittsburgh. The Jags are now the only team without a win.
Does Trump really want to win?
8 I think a combination of stress and age is getting to him. Running for the presidency has got to be stressful even under the best conditions and it’s exacerbated by Trump’s legal troubles and perhaps knowing that a significant portion of the American population can’t stand him. He’s a malignant narcissist, yes, but I can’t help but think coming into contact with evidence that so many people hate him bothers him a bit.
SDMB Fantasy Football DYNASTY league: Year 16
Welcome to year 16, and I gotta think this makes us one of the longest running dynasty leagues on the internet. I’m going to steal the fine work Jules did on last year’s thread and just use his format with some updates. League Dates Preseason begins: Thursday Aug 1st (Hall of Fame game) Final roster cuts: 12:00pm ET Monday, Aug. 26th 2023 Dynasty rookie draft opening day: 12:01p ET Monday, Aug. 26th NFL opening day: Thursday, Sept.
House of the Dragon finale 8/4/2024
August 5, 2024, 8:26pm 1 Man, what a letdown of a final. I thought the episode itself was pretty good. If that had been episode 5 in a 10 episode season I would have been pretty pumped about what was coming up. Big buildup! Huge things on the horizon! That doesn’t work as a finale though. Outside of one episode this entire season seemed like it was making very very slow progress if at all.
House of the Dragon 2.07 7/28/24 OPEN SPOILERS
July 28, 2024, 9:49pm 1 2.01: A Son for a Son 2.02: Rhaenyra The Cruel 2.03: The Burning Mill 2.04: The Red Dragon and The Gold 2.05: Regent 2.06: Smallfolk Everything on the TV show can be discussed with no spoiler boxes. Any material from outside of the show (books, leaks, etc) requires spoiler boxes. I decided to shake things up this week and actually post the episode thread in time instead of late.
House of the Dragon 2.05 "Regen" 7/14/24 OPEN SPOILERS
Anything that was on the show requires no spoiler boxes. Any material from outside of the show (books, leaks, etc) requires spoiler boxes. Sorry I’m late. I need to set a weekly reminder for myself. My enthusiasm/attention hasn’t been there this season. 2.01: A Son for a Son 2.02: Rhaenyra The Cruel 2.03: The Burning Mill 2.04: The Red Dragon and The Gold
