What was your first job as a journalist?
Weekend nights at a paper's high school sports desk. Stringers at games would read me their stories over the phone and I'd transcribe them.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Used? Yes. Used as part of my trade? Can't say I have. I don't think I would have lasted in the days before the "Delete" button.
How is social media changing news?
Journalists now have to be their own hype man. This creates a situation where different type of journalist thrives than may have in the past

What does it mean to be a journalist?
To ask the questions that need to be asked. And to serve as a proxy for readers who can't be everywhere at once.

Oh man, anything I say will seem so dated in a week.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?
A laptop and smartphone. I type using Pages and Google Docs, and use my phone's video record function to tape interviews.
What's your favorite social network?
I like the rawness of Twitter. Facebook's feeds lose a lot of luster in their algorithmic attempts to be relevant to me.

All those I admire and fear.
Why did you become a journalist?
So I could speak to and learn from people who are far smarter than myself.
