Oscar-winning Irish folk musician Glen Hansard has died
BBC reports it was a motorcycle crash outside of Dublin. He was only 56. Incredibly sad; I loved his music. What a loss.
New Maine Senate race thread, moving on from Platner
July 9, 2026, 12:35am 1 Platner is out (hooray!). Dems have a couple of weeks or so to pick a new candidate. How will they do it? Who will they pick? How will that candidate fare against Collins? If they can pull it together, I hope they do a statewide caucus (since another primary election is probably impossible on such short notice), and I hope Troy Jackson wins.
I cleared this spot, it's MINE!
January 27, 2026, 5:00pm 1 The recent snows have re-ignited the annual debate in our fair city about shoveling out the parking spot in front of one’s house and then proclaiming a perpetual “this spot is mine,” even to the point of putting down traffic cones, lawn chairs or other obstacles to keep other drivers from parking in it. The arguments come down to two intractable points of view. 1. It’s in front of (or at least adjacent to) my house; I cleared it out; it’s mine. 2. You don’t own the street.
Are the Cormoran Strike books any good?
November 24, 2025, 1:10pm 1 I don’t care for Rowling, but I was also unaware that she’d written this series. Are they interesting? Well-written?
NFL Week 7
October 14, 2025, 2:01pm 1 The Colts and Bucs improved to 5-1 and lead their divisions, while the Steelers, at 4-1, are the only team above .500 in the AFC North. The Eagles have lost two in a row but still lead their division, while the Packers have moved into first in the NFC North. The Chargers and Broncos both won by two points to remain tied atop the AFC West. The Bills lost their second in a row and are tied with New England, while the Niners fell to 4-2 and into a tie with Seattle.
NFL Week 5
September 30, 2025, 2:10pm 1 And then there were two. Buffalo remained undefeated with a tougher-than-expected victory over the Saints, while the Eagles built a big lead and then survived a furious comeback by the previously unbeaten Bucs to also improve to 4-0. The Chargers lost their first game to the previously winless Giants, the Colts suffered their first loss to the Rams, and the Niners committed four turnovers in their loss to the Jags.
Movies where a singer sings - let me explain
August 8, 2025, 12:36pm 1 In Rio Bravo, there’s a point in the movie where Dean Martin gets to sing. Same for Ricky Nelson in Wackiest Ship in the Army. The songs have nothing to do with the story, they’re just scenes to provide the singers an opportunity to sing. Are there other movies with songs inserted just because? Is it because the singer’s agent puts it in the contract? Does anyone do this any more or was it a short-lived gimmick?
Do Boston restaurants feature baked beans?
I pulled up a list of “best steakhouses in Boston.” Looking at the menus of places that don’t appear to be chains, and appear to have been around for a while: The Stockyard: no Boston Chops: no Grill 23: no Abe & Louie’s: no Mason’s Steakhouse: no Doesn’t mean there aren’t restaurants in Boston that have baked beans, but it’s not apparently a thing at “nice steak houses” in the city.
What’s the most underrated video game you’ve ever played?
July 17, 2025, 11:29am 1 I have been diving back into some older games recently and realized how many amazing titles never got the recognition they deserved. What’s that one game you love that nobody seems to talk about? Can be PC, console, or even mobile. Tell us what made it special for you!
Stranger Things - Final Season
July 16, 2025, 5:13pm 1 Netflix has just released the first teaser trailer for Stranger Things Season 5: https://youtu.be/iKZyYdwS3Wg It seems they are going for a “holiday weekend” release schedule: Vol 1 on November 26 Vol 2 on Christmas Finale on New Year’s Eve I’m all in - can’t wait to see how they close it out! Fingers crossed they don’t screw it up
Return To Office, not working as controlling bosses wanted it
July 14, 2025, 10:06pm 1 Business Insider Researchers studying RTO policies of S&P 500 companies found no improvement in the value of the businesses that brought workers back to the office. Late last year, Forbes reported that 90% of companies will return to the office in 2024, with 28% threatening to fire workers who don’t comply.
NY Times Readers' 100 Top Movies of the 21st Century
12 On taking another look, Inception is also on the list (#24). That’s another one that just wasn’t a very good movie at all. It’s just a brainless action movie that came up with a gimmick for why all of the rampant destruction of an action movie doesn’t matter. None of the Big Ideas were actually fresh, new, or innovative. There are also some foreign-language movies on the list, but they’re underrepresented. But that’s to be expected, being chosen by readers of an English-language publication.
So... how are men supposed to look for "business casual" shirts?
June 10, 2025, 4:11pm 1 It’s a bit embarrassing to ask this… but, uh, how do I shop for everyday shirts that aren’t just t-shirts? (I don’t know all the different clothing vocabulary, sorry, maybe “business casual”?) As a working-class millennial, I feel like this is one of those things that I was just never really taught or picked up on my own.
Four days in Barcelona in August
My wife is presenting at a conference in Barcelona this August (paid for by work), so I’ll be taking the opportunity to join her for a short stay. August would not normally be my choice of times to visit Barcelona, but c’est la vie, to mix languages. I’m looking for advice on where in the city to base ourselves. We’ll be staying within the city (no day trips) and using public transportation/walking, so I want to stay someplace near the center of things without being directly in a tourist hell zone.
Help me defeat my cat
April 22, 2025, 4:53pm 1 So my dear Matilda, a lovely and intelligent little kitty, is also a pain in my ass. She likes to go into my room and wake me up too early by knocking things off of my nightstand or turning on my sleeping computer if I don’t pet her or show some indication that I’m getting up to feed her. If I try to catch her and get her out, she runs away into my room and hides. If I do manage to get her out and close it, she will somehow pop it back open.
Ireland in Early Autumn: Tips/advice Sought
March 11, 2025, 4:24pm 1 I’m tired of all these MF snakes…or the geopolitical climate, so I figured it is time to visit Éire. It’s been a long-time desire, but the idea of perhaps living much of the year outside the US has become increasingly appealing for some reason. I’ll add some of my thoughts and situation details regarding soft-immigration at the end. Key points: I am thinking September, because the weather should still be ~pleasant, and it is outside the main tourist season.
Matt Gaetz withdraws from AG nomination
10 Thank God. The senators he spoke to must have told him there was no way he would be confirmed. What’s even better is that this means the attention can now be squarely focused on Trump’ s equally odious choices for his cabinet: namely Pete Hegseth, Tulsi Gabbard, and RFK Jr. Unless of course Trump nominates someone even worse than Gaetz for AG, like Rudy Giuliani.
I think I'm done with Thanksgiving
November 12, 2024, 2:21pm 1 Not a huge loss for me, as I’ve never really enjoyed the food aspect of it. I figure, if I want a delicious meal I can make one at any time. As far as the family aspect, Thanksgiving is a time when the men get together to watch football and drink beer while the women make 3 simultaneous meals. Since I don’t like football and I’m uncomfortable with misogyny, that leaves me to guiltily try to help in the kitchen while trying to avoid conversations about sports or politics.
NFL 2024-25: Week 6
October 8, 2024, 2:34pm 1 Last week the Jags got their first win, justifying their status as favorites over the Colts. The Vikings hung on against the Jets in London to remain undefeated, and the Falcons won a wild OT game over the Bucs on TNF. The Commanders improved to 4-1, and the Bengals dropped to 1-4 with an OT loss to the Ravens. The Bills dropped their second straight, while the Broncos improved to 3-2.
NFL 2024-25: Week 5
October 1, 2024, 5:27pm 1 Last week the Bengals and Titans got their first wins, while the Steelers, Seahawks, and Bills suffered their first losses. The surprising Commanders are 3-1, and the Broncos beat the Jets in the rain while passing for only 60 yards. The Chiefs won another one-score game to remain undefeated, and the Vikings are also still unbeaten. Joe Flacco (Joe Flacco?) came off the bench to pilot the Colts to their win over Pittsburgh. The Jags are now the only team without a win.
Biden v Trump: June 27 debate (Live debate comment here)
June 25, 2024, 8:56pm 1 This thread is for discussion of the debate, speculation about the debate itself and reaction after the conclusion. If the debate does not actually happen this can die a natural death and Aeschines can say “I told you so.”
Art installation known as “ The Portal that links NY sidewalk with Dublin temp closed
May 15, 2024, 3:40pm 1 This is an art sculpture. Human behavior is part of the experience. I don’t agree with censoring art. People can and should interact with the sculpture however they want. Just don’t vandalize it. I don’t have any problem with people flashing the camera. Or holding up a political sign. It’s all a form of communication. That’s how the exhibit influenced them. It would be awesome to have a circular sculpture with eight video portals to various cities around the world.
Nfl draft 2024!
April 22, 2024, 10:38pm 1 We’re just a few days away from the 2024 NFL draft. As with every year, I’m excited to see how the draft will play out. Who will get horribly over-drafted (JJ McCarthy/Drake Maye). Who will fall and provide great value (Jackson Powers Johnson?). And which team will decide to trade up to get the guy they’re absolutely sure will be the cornerstone of their franchise (Vikings? Giants?
Bob_Blaylock hates Electric Vehicles and was happy to highjack a thread about it
March 13, 2024, 12:22am 1 I’m a construction worker, and can expect to be sent to projects as far as eighty miles away from home. I live in an apartment, with no EV charger available to me, and no realistic possibility of having one installed for my use. I usually work at places that are still being built. There may be chargers there, when those places are finished, but by that time, I’ll be done with that project, and hopefully moved on to another.
Tell Me About Your Life Without Sugar
1 I’ve been feeling pretty crap lately, and I don’t think it’s coincidental that I’ve been ingesting large amounts of sugar. I believe it’s disrupting my sleep. However, I can’t really imagine my life without it. It’s a part of how I cope with life. How I deal with stress and how I celebrate. How did you do it? What is it like? I don’t think for me there is any such thing as moderation. Did you find that also to be the case? Just looking for others’ experiences here.
Nevada Fake Electors Indictef
1 A Nevada grand jury has indicted the six fake electors. Kenneth « The Cheese » Chesebro has been singing like a canary, sounds like. CNN – 6 Dec 23 A Nevada grand jury has indicted six individuals who acted as fake electors in a scheme intended to overturn Joe Biden’s 2020 election win, according to the state’s attorney general.
When you were a child, was it your dream to grow up, own an egg company and someday rip off all of your consumers?
Or does that only happen as you get older and more cynical? I’m just asking. I mean WHO FUCKING DOES THIS? Well, The Decision Makers at Cal-Maine and Rose Acre Farms did. twitter.com Ron Filipkowski I thought it was Biden’s fault?
NFL 2023: WEEK 11 Men on the field, Buffalo
This week starts with a great matchup in Baltimore and ends with a Super Bowl rematch in Kansas City. But in between there are 7 woofers in which the spread is at least a touchdown.
RIP Sinead O'Connor
Wasn’t expecting this. RIP. Saw that and felt very sad. What a complicated life. I’m not surprised. I heard a story about her on NPR a while ago. From the Variety obituary: In August 2017, she posted an emotional video to her Facebook page, stating that she had three mental illnesses and felt alone after losing custody of her 13-year-old son Shane. She continued that she had wanted to kill herself for several years and that only her psychiatrists and doctor were keeping her alive.
Recommend spy novels
Back in college in the late 80’s I read a lot of spy novels. The cold war was a great time for that genre. I worked at a library and read everything from The Man from U.N.C.L.E. to Robert Ludlum to Tom Clancy and pretty much everything in between. I have not read this genre is over 20 years. Are there any decent authors out there that write current spy novels? Yes, Mick Herron’s Slow Horses series is superb. Highly recommend.
Matt Gaetz being investigated for sex with 17 year old girl (DOJ declines to charge 2023-02-15)
friedo March 30, 2021, 10:29pm 2 More coverage from the NY Times: The investigation was opened in the final months of the Trump administration under Attorney General William P. Barr, the two people said. Given Mr. Gaetz’s national profile, senior Justice Department officials in Washington — including some appointed by Mr. Trump — were notified of the investigation, the people said.
