Strategy as Appetite Suppressant
It is tempting to compare successful national strategies to unicorns: They both seem mythical. But while good strategies might be rare, they are very real. And despite the impressions left by recent history, they are possible. There are multiple meanings and purposes for grand strategy; as grand plans, as a set of macro principles, or as patterns of state behavior, as Nina Silove detailed. However, there is a fourth meaning and this purpose now rises to the forefront in salience.
Kings, Presidents, Editors, and People with Tapeworms
November 4, 2019 “Only kings, presidents, editors, and people with tapeworms have the right to use the editorial ‘we.’” This line, often attributed to Mark Twain (it wasn’t him) speaks to the thorny feelings that writers associate with those who shape their prose. "Nuclear South Asia: An Analyst's Guide to India, Pakistan, and the Bomb," the Stimson Center’s inaugural open online course, seeks to provide an interactive and dynamic space where strategic analysts can study and debate nuclear issues in South Asia. The course consists of filmed interviews with over 60 analysts, scholars, and former government officials from India, Pakistan, and the United States.
India's Achilles' Heel
The United States has an enduring interest in India’s economic and military rise. Just last week, Admiral Harry Harris, commander of U.S. Pacific Command, called the U.S.-Indian relationship “the defining partnership for America in the twenty-first century,” encouraging India to step up its joint military activities with the United States as a signal to China.
