After 16 years in its location on Buckeye Road, West Coast Martial Arts has moved to 1328 Highway 395 in Gardnerville, in the former Centerfield Sports Bar & Grill space. The move was prompted by the Bently Heritage Estate Distillery project planned by Chris Bently. The interior of the building has been transformed from a sports bar with televisions littering the walls to a wide-open martial arts gym, but it hasn't been easy. "It was tough," said George Fujii, owner of West Coast Martial Arts. "We ended up having less than a month to move from the Bently building to this one.

Minden, Nev. - Thunderbird pilot Major Scott Petz and Crew Chief Staff Sgt. Alex Reed visited the Minden-Tahoe Airport on Monday in preparation for the air show that will take place Aug. 22-23. Both pilots look forward to putting on the show in a smaller area like the Carson Valley. "We are fortunate to come to Minden," said Petz. "I enjoy smaller venues because we get to interact more personally with the community and it's just a lot of fun." Most spectators attend airshows to experience the excitement of six F-16's flying low and fast in tight formation, but both Petz and Reed emphasized that although the show is the main attraction, there is a lot more going on.

On her Caribbean retirement cruise, Karen Goode will undoubtedly have a lot to think about. Goode retired Feb. 20 after 33 years with Douglas County Social Services. "When I first started with social services, it was a tiny office in the basement of the old courthouse in Minden," Goode said. "Now it's huge compared to what it was." The years have been challenging at times for Goode, but in the end they have all been more than worth it. "Seeing people who were clients do well and come back to say that we made a difference is what really fulfilled me," said Goode.

For centuries, cats have lived in libraries and been trained to hunt rodents and serpents that might destroy old papyrus manuscripts or eat the glue in the bindings of modern books. Many Carson Valley residents remember Douglas County's own library cats Baker and Taylor, who were brought to the Douglas County Public Library in Minden for just that purpose from 1983 to 1997. New York Times bestselling author Lisa Rogak is going to tell the story of Baker and Taylor in an upcoming book.
