What was your first job as a journalist?
In the fourth grade, I used my computer class time to create "The Cool Kid Gazette," which was distributed to my fellow students.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes!
How is social media changing news?
It's changing how, where and when people consume news. Social media is the news now, and there is really no going back.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Sally Albright in "When Harry Met Sally." And while she's not a journalist, I highly identify with Elaine Benes and her footwear copywriting.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
Journalists seek to explain the world, to help make sense of it. They help people to digest issues both big and small.
What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?
I will never forget
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
Email is best. Hed and dek with a short summary and ideas on sources is all that's needed to get going.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
Social media channels, of course. But I find that utilizing the Adobe creative suite helps more and more with integrating text with visuals.
What's your favorite social network?
Instagram, but I'm really starting to love TikTok.
Who do you wish followed you?
Rihanna. I would select every word more carefully if I knew she was following along.
Why did you become a journalist?
To explain and use my voice.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
Yes! I was the lifestyles editor at The Tower newspaper, an award-winning student publication at Grosse Pointe South High School in Michigan.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
Off the top of my head, a cover shoot with Martha Stewart; a cover story and shoot with Allyson Felix; shoot with Jordan Brand's Howard White
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
A tendency to ask a lot of questions is key.
When's the best time to pitch you?
Monday mornings.
What's the best pitch you ever got?
One I loved was matching watches with the personalities of famous guys in TV and film. Not the best but memorable.
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
Somewhere back in 2012, I and a group of fashion editors received a pitch on the brand "Poo-pouri." The publicist was relentless.
What's your favorite drink?
Kombucha, and Negronis.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
Hiking if at home. At work, I'm on press previews and appointments.
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
The New York Times, every day. Plus, The Atlantic, the New Yorker. Air Mail is a treat.
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
That fashion is fluff.
