Interview
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Probably, a tie between Mary Tyler Moore and Murphy Brown. But, Perd Hapley is also a close runner-up.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
I prefer to get an email with all the information, but not too much editorializing, I want to find the story myself.
Why did you become a journalist?
I've always wanted to be a journalist since I was a kid. I was shy but a good listener. I always liked the idea of telling stories.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
Negin Farsad, who wrote a book called How To Make White People Laugh, which looks at how her Muslim faith changed her sense of humor.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Make sure to stand behind the stories you tell because your name is on them.
When's the best time to pitch you?
I love getting pitches in the morning and earlier in the week, gives me time to think them over.
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
I love reading Vulture, The Cut, The Ringer, The New York Times, and Vanity Fair.
