OnDemand | Detect and Defeat Automated Cyber Attacks
Competing for customer loyalty in a digital world is hard. To add to this challenge, security teams must defend the business from motivated adversaries who have evolved their tactics to bypass traditional defences and evade detection. Any business that operates eCommerce applications or manages user accounts of value is a potential target and the consequences are significant. Credential stuffing and account takeover can result in fraud losses, damaged brand, and other equally disastrous scenarios.

There is a war brewing in cyberspace. The general public is blissfully unaware, and very likely will remain so. The media, when it talks about cybersecurity, tends to focus on the breach of the week, even though there cannot possibly be any lessons left to learn in that parade of spectacle and shame. The war we speak of is against malicious automation (bots), and it’s being fought largely outside the gaze of journalism.

When NIST issued guidelines in 2017 advising organizations to check new users’ credentials against a password “breach corpus,” one of the first questions was how to ensure the breach corpus itself didn’t get compromised. Shape’s game-changing product, Blackfish, solved that problem by designing a patented approach to credential storage involving Bloom filters.

Eight years ago, there wasn’t even a term for the practice of testing consumers’ stolen credentials against multiple e-commerce sites to see if they’ll enable account takeovers (ATOs) and other forms of fraud. Now, the US consumer banking industry alone faces nearly $50 million per day in potential losses due to credential stuffing attacks, while online retail is experiencing losses of about $6 billion per year.

2021 Credential Stuffing Report
Shape Security & F5 Labs Whitepaper Despite consensus about best practices, industry behaviors around password storage remain poor. Plaintext storage of passwords is responsible for the greatest number of spilled credentials by far, and the widely discredited hashing algorithm MD5 remains surprisingly prevalent. Organizations remain weak at detecting and discovering intrusions and data exfiltration.

Account Takeovers (ATOs) and credential stuffing represent a huge threat to the retail industry. In fact, they pose major problems for any vertical in which customers tend to reuse passwords for multiple accounts. Password reuse makes compromised credentials even more valuable to cyber criminals. Starbucks recognized this threat more than four years ago, before it was well understood by the industry at large.

E-commerce fraud has grown to the point where it’s a now a bigger drain on retail profits than shoplifting or inventory shrinkage. Based on the information we’ve gathered defending many of the largest retailers, banks and airlines in the world against cyber crime, there are three attack modes that carry particularly high risks for retailers: Ecommerce chargeback costs for retailers, the biggest financial hit associated with account takeovers, have now reached $40 billion per year.

More than 90 billion passwords are being used across the web today, and it’s expected to be nearer 300 billion by 2020. With that in mind, the topics of password best practices and the threats around stolen credentials, remain top challenges for many global organizations. Security Boulevard recently hosted a webinar with Shape and cyber security expert Justin Richer, co-author of the new NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) Digital Identity Guidelines.

Recently, Shape collaborated with R-CISC to share attack data and analysis of the most prevalent threats for retailers and best practices on how Top 10 Retailers are mitigating these threats. Watch the threat briefing video here or read a summary of the key points below.
Why Data Breach Stats Get It Wrong
It's not the size of the stolen data dump that is important. It's the window between the date of the breach and the date of discovery that represents the biggest threat. Earlier this month, Yahoo announced that it had drastically underestimated the impact of the data breach it reported in 2016. In December of last year, the company reported that, in addition to its previous breach of 500 million accounts, an additional 1 billion accounts had been compromised in a separate breach.
How Cybercriminals Bypass CAPTCHA
2Captcha workers are incentivized to submit correct solutions much like an Uber driver is incentivized to provide excellent service—customer ratings. 2Captcha customers rate the accuracy of the CAPTCHA solutions they received. If a 2Captcha worker’s rating falls below a certain threshold, she will be kicked off the platform. Conversely, workers with the highest ratings will be rewarded during times of low demand by receiving priority in CAPTCHA distribution.
