Today I am 30 days sober
Response to cate94 (Original post) Wed Sep 13, 2023, 09:07 AM I know what you're going through. I quit 40 years ago and haven't had a drink since. However, it wasn't as easy as I might make it sound. It took me about 5 years to finally quit for good. During that time I was sober most of the time but there were times I had to try drinking again; it never turned out well.
'Is That Even Legal?'
Response to MineralMan (Original post) Wed Aug 30, 2023, 02:20 PM My mother, married in the 1960s, kept her name. It was legal in NY, where she was married. It was not legal in MN, where she moved, until several years later, but she proudly flew them the bird. I keep my name also. My father was nasty about this, and I learned from him. When I was a kid making name tags for parent-teacher night, my trash-fire of a teacher tried to make me write “Mrs. ” on the leaf-shaped tag I made.

One aspect of the "public execution" of Prigozhin that I haven't seen addressed
Fri Aug 25, 2023, 10:37 AM is that the message Putin sent, "Cross me and you die," has a flip side. Namely: "Anyone who challenges me better go all the way. You can't trust any agreement I make with you, any promise of forgiveness or amnesty. Cross me, and I better die, or you will." It seems to me this is a dangerous message to send, and that this "public execution"--if that's what it was--may have some unintended consequences.

Pediatric overdoses have increased by 530 percent over the past decade. https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2023/05/melatonin-kids-overdose/674104/ https://archive.is/1BtqT In the dark, early days of the coronavirus pandemic, Michael Toce noticed a surprising trend. The problem wasn’t that they’d overdosed on opioids or painkillers or marijuana.

Response to debm55 (Original post) Tue May 30, 2023, 10:44 PM 9. Dances with wolves Maybe too harsh, many things about the movie as a whole were quite good I just think Kevin Costner is a terrible actor. He's well-suited to play a baseball player, because that's about his entire range right there. But in dances with wolves, I could not stop wondering what this guy from the current era was doing in a movie set a long time ago. He couldn't come close to pulling me in.

With the Latest Republican Move of the Goal Posts, Arizona House Democrats are Mad as Hell
Wed Mar 1, 2023, 03:23 PM Arizona Republicans have demonstrated on numerous occasions with their MAGA extremist-reactionary-discriminatory legislative agenda, devotion to the Big Lie of the 2020 Presidential Election (despite revelations showing these same Republicans not stepping up to the plate to turn over evidence backing up their false claims when given the opportunity,) and unwillingness to negotiate with the Democratic Governor in good faith on a bipartisan budget, that they are not...

McConnell confirms GOP plan to sunset Social Security and Medicare
Response to 2naSalit (Reply #6) Fri Feb 10, 2023, 11:36 AM 21. I hope you are right. McConnell is getting old and likely wants to accomplish 'righting the ship' before it is too late for him, and the Republicans in the Senate. Trying to get anywhere with the Tea Party turned MAGAts must be quite stressful. His wife learned a thing or two the hard way about trying to serve in the Trump Administration, and likely is behind Mitch's apparent resolve, too.

Manchin warns Biden not to 'berate' Republicans during State of the Union
Response to Polybius (Reply #42) Thu Feb 9, 2023, 01:36 AM 52. Ugh, no we are not. The noble administration here have made it perfectly clear that criticizing a Democrat is forbidden. You are only allowed to say nice things about them. I learned this when they recently deleted a comment I had made about a democrat. I was not swearing or saying anything hostile. I was talking about how much I disagreed with said person. But the admins took it down saying that it was "flaming". That was total BS.
In the end, I could see Trump picking Pompeo as his vice president.
Pompeo is going to run for president. He will most likely not win the nomination. Trump picking him would not be controversial as other choices. Trump voters know him well. Pompeo, in my opinion, is an extremely dangerous person who could see being Trumps vice president as a way to become president in the future. Pompeo is an extremist and he is a better liar than Trump. He is smarter than Trump. Hopefully, Trump will be indicted before any of this happens.
DeWine signed the new voter suppression law. Here's the thing about that.
Mon Jan 9, 2023, 04:50 PM Sure, he's taking away some early voting and limiting each county to a single drop box at the Board of Election, but what about the photo ID law? Everybody has to show a valid state issued photo ID to get a ballot. What about a single mother who gets a ride from a family member to the store and doctor appointments because she never learned to drive and can't afford a car or insurance if she did.?

Okay.. the elections are done.. so now I will tell you about Iowa
Response to bello (Reply #20) Thu Nov 17, 2022, 05:32 PM 84. They need to take a few lessons from the Michigan Democratic Party. MIDems were "in the wilderness" after 2011, just like it sounds like Iowa is now. The MIGQP dominated every branch of government, the legislature proceeded to gerrymander the hell out of the state, as well as holding the majority on the MI Supreme Court. It seemed pretty hopeless that Democrats would have any sort of power for the foreseeable future.
GOP extremism explains why Democrats fared well
By Matthew Yglesias / Bloomberg Opinion As has been noted repeatedly, before and after this weekís elections, for the presidentís party to do well in the midterms is unusual. One of the few such cases on record, in 1998, came amid a sex scandal and with Congress already in opposition hands. Another, in 2002, happened under the shadow of 9/11.
Thousands commemorate Italy's fascist dictator Mussolini
Response to ificandream (Original post) Sun Oct 30, 2022, 02:50 PM 4. Why in the world are any of you surprised by this? There have always been, currently are, and in the future will be those who prefer being ruled to being governed. Being ruled means you don't have to take any responsibility in how you lead your life. Follow the rules and all is well. If something goes wrong it's not your fault. Being governed requires stepping up, putting in an effort and accepting responsibility for your choices.

OPINION: Why the House Select Committee Trump subpoena is so important
The January 6th House Select Committee ended its final televised hearing before the midterm elections on Thursday with a vote to subpoena Donald Trump. The move to subpoena Trump has been under consideration for some time, but the public Committee vote marks the boldest step yet for the bipartisan panel, which has so far issued more than 100 subpoenas and interviewed more than 1,000 people over the course of its investigation. Chairman Rep.
Russian Invasion of Ukraine - Russian Forces Retreat From Lyman
Source: New York Times Here’s what we know: The loss of the strategic rail hub in the east is particularly poorly timed for the Kremlin after its internationally derided illegal annexation of four Ukrainian regions. Russia’s withdrawal from Lyman comes a day after Putin said he was annexing the region. Broken glass, blown-out tires and a crater show the violence of a deadly attack in Zaporizhzhia.
Ukraine war: Russia to keep key gas pipeline to EU closed
Source: BBC Russia's main gas pipeline to Europe will not reopen as planned on Saturday, adding to concerns about energy supplies this winter. State energy firm Gazprom said it found a leak on Nord Stream 1, meaning it could be closed indefinitely. The pipeline, which runs to Germany, has been shut for three days for what Gazprom described as maintenance work. Europe accused Russia of using its gas supplies to blackmail Europe amid the Ukraine conflict, which Moscow denies.

Response to SharonAnn (Reply #13) Mon Jul 4, 2022, 02:27 PM 16. It does mention Catholic "Integralism" of which Opus Dei would be included but I'm not sure how many of the current Catholics on the Supreme Court actually hold to an Integralist position. My guess is that Kavanaugh probably couldn't care less about Catholic perspectives, he's more of a conservative ideologue. Hard to find specific information but Roberts is apparently not very regular in taking communion or attending church.
