What was your first job as a journalist?
Writing an article about the development of a mall in Kenya. I interviewed the entire team involved in Nairobi.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes. Although briefly. There was one at my old office. I wanted to see how it felt typing on it. It was oddly satisfying.
How is social media changing news?
It has increased the speed and reach of news. Journalists now have to share news immediately and publish more items than before.

Carrie Bradshaw
What does it mean to be a journalist?
To inform. The responsibility falls on journalists to tell the truth always, regardless of personal feelings.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
Through email. I don't mind reading long pitches as long as the structure is clear.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
Google Docs, Grammarly and Semrush

Why did you become a journalist?
I have enjoyed writing ever since I was young. I wanted to write pieces as good as the ones I would read in the newspaper.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
Yes, I did. I wrote pieces for guidance and counselling. They would contain encouragement and validation for my fellow students.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
A story about Lamu as a travel destination at the height of terrorism in Kenya.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
The more you write, the better you get. Let research be your greatest tool.

A writer wanted to critique the system where poor people in Kenya pay more for services than the wealthy. She called it "Poverty Penalty"

A pitch asking to write about the benefits of luxury hotels in the community land in Kenya
What's your favorite drink?
Tea. I want it, however I can get it. Iced, hot, black, green. Any kind will always be my favourite.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
On my couch or outside my house in the garden.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?
That you can write gossip without proof. We have to ensure that every piece of news in entertainment is verified.
