While Gytha Lodge’s second book in her Jonah Sheens series is a British police procedural, it is also a psychological thriller and a character study—her characters fly off the page. Aiden Poole, a lecturer at the local university, is sitting in front of his computer waiting to Skype with his girlfriend Zoe, who is offscreen in the bathroom, when her video camera catches the small bit of her front door that is visible opening.

A few things readers of Lee Child’s Jack Reacher series can depend on: Reacher will be minding his own business as he wanders hither and yon, trouble will invariably find him, a lot of action will ensue, and a beautiful woman will inevitably join forces and share a bed with him. Nothing much changes in Blue Moon. Reacher is on a bus and notices an elderly man sleeping.

A Chicago industrialist and his wife are found shot in their summer home on the lake. At first it’s thought it might be an outside job—the industrialist was involved in several ugly lawsuits.

Detective Chief Superintendent Frankie Sheehan of Dublin is called to a grisly murder scene where the bodies of a man dressed in a priest’s vestments and a woman naked from the waist up have been posed at the local Catholic church. In the man’s hand is a knife with the word “weapon” written on it. The murders come on the heels of the high-profile release of Sean Hennessey, a man who spent 17 years behind bars for the murder of his parents, but who has always maintained his innocence.

There’s nothing quite as delicious as a well-plotted, keep-you-guessing psychological thriller with a domestic twist. English author Louise Jensen delivers just such a book in The Surrogate. Nick and Kat White cannot conceive. Twice they’ve thought they had an adoption tied up—they’ve bought clothes, decorated the nursery—only to have the child given to another couple. Kat is devastated; all her life she’s wanted to be a mother.

Need to Know
Need to Know, a thriller that merges espionage, domestic, and psychological subgenres, received so much buzz that before it even had a publisher its film rights were sold to Universal Studios as a major motion picture produced by and starring Charlize Theron. Pretty heady stuff for debut novelist Karen Cleveland, who, like her protagonist Vivian Miller, has experience as a CIA analyst.

Life imitating art imitating life is perhaps the best way to describe this debut psychological thriller by Natasha Bell, set as it is in the world of performance art, a world with which the protagonist, Alexandra Southwood, is enthralled. When Alexandra disappears one night on her way home from work, her devoted husband, Marc, is beside himself, but doesn’t give up hope of finding her.
