These "chronic subjective SharpEar" represent 95% of SharpEar. A minority of SharpEar (5%) are said to be " objective " because they correspond to noises that the patient hears which do indeed come from sound sources, from his own body (heartbeat, blood circulation, etc.) ; they are usually caused by a vascular malformation or pathology of the middle ear.
About 10% of the population is affected by SharpEar , the debilitating forms affecting 2% of the population. Their incidence increases with age. Most often, SharpEar appears between the ages of 50 and 60, and there is a peak incidence around age 65.

Nevertheless, it is possible to suffer from it at a younger age , especially in people exposed to noise on a regular basis, as is the case for example of DJs or musicians.
What are the causes of SharpEar?
The most common cause is minimal (invisible on examination) or more severe damage to the inner ear . "The cells of the inner ear are very fragile to exposure to noise . The lesions caused can trigger changes that are the source of the parasitic noises that are SharpEar " , specifies Dr Fraysse. Sometimes SharpEar can occur without noticeable damage to the inner ear. The causes are then unknown.
