Shawn Carrié’s Biography

Journalism isn't meant to entertain, it's meant to write the history of the present.

I'm a freelance correspondent based in the Middle East covering politics, human rights, and migration. I've always been drawn to tension, conflict & strong emotions – but I firmly believe in rigorous, fact-based reporting that cuts through the polemic and rhetoric that clouds our world, and can help up to understand, and just maybe, improve it.

I've interviewed the family of a teenager killed by police in Ferguson, traced the route from the Syrian border to the German one, photographed smoke-filled cafés alive with the prison songs of jailed Tunisian revolutionaries, and been shot in the head twice.

My work has appeared in The Guardian, VICE, The Nation and Syria Deeply. I graduated from The New School for Social Research in 2014 with a double major in journalism and politics. I am fluent in French and and speak conversational Turkish and Arabic.

In a past life, I was a classically-trained pianist.
