Planes, pains & automobiles: Mike Cannon-Brookes defends owning a private jet & backing F1 racing
Nobody really understands the torment of being a billionaire, especially those very mean people at the AFR. After luxury jet-shaming Mike Cannon-Brookes and outing him as the owner of a Bombardier 7500 – you can pick one up for around $100 million on Facebook marketplace – the Atlassian CEO felt compelled to defend himself on LinkedIn about being a high flyer and his company’s recent naming rights sponsorship of back-of-the-grid Formula One team Williams.
REVIEW: Pirate ships but with lasers: Pirate Yakuza's wackiness delivers so much joy
Tight gameplay mechanics Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii reach new heights and make a strong case for more fast-following spin-offs that recycle assets. The first trailer for Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii confounded me. After jumping into the series last year with Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth, I wondered if the franchise was doing a historic game – set in an era where pirates were rife and apparently in Hawaii. But no. I was wrong. This is a game set in the present time.
Cars, and cash for startups: Airwallex gets into the F1 spirit
Airwallex launched its ‘Shifted Perspectives’ campaign for the launch of the Formula 1 season in Melbourne this week, handing out startup grants and chatting to homegrown McLaren driver Oscar Piastri. The fintech sponsors the UK F1 team McLaren, originally founded in 1965 by Kiwi engineer, innovator, entrepreneur and driver Bruce McLaren.
Shark Tank's Robert Herjavec joins Melbourne data lakehouse scaleup Zetaris and also invests in it
US Shark Tank investor and cybersecurity startup founder Robert Herjavec is joining Melbourne scaleup Zetaris as executive director of global strategy. He was so impressed, he’s also invested in the company, although that figure was not disclosed. Herjavec believes Zetaris has unicorn (worth more than $1bn) potential. Zetaris was founded in 2013 by Vinay Samuel and Michael Cimino as a data management platform that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to help businesses make decisions.
BOOK REVIEW: Bill Gates’s life of privilege exposes many of the tech industry’s problems
Bill Gates, cofounder of Microsoft, is one of the world’s richest men. He is also a highly controversial figure. On one hand, he contributes to social, medical and environmental causes through his foundation, making grants worth more than US$77 billion ($A123 billion) from its inception to the end of 2023. On the other, he has confirmed associations with Jeffrey Epstein and was the subject of spurious COVID conspiracy theories. Even Gates’ Microsoft days were controversial.
Lobby group The Tech Council of Australia rearranges its chairs, with Atlassian's Scott Farquhar replacing Robyn Denholm
Robyn Denholm, chair of beleaguered car manufacturer Tesla, is stepping down as inaugural chair of industry lobby group The Tech Council of Australia (TCA), after 3.5 years in the role. She will be replaced by Atlassian cofounder Scott Farquhar, who stepped away from his day job as co-CEO last year, and has also been on the TCA board since its inception.
One year of gaming reviews: what I've learnt about Australia's hunger for good video games journalism and Substack
I’ve always loved video games and the idea of writing about them had been a passion. Back when I worked as a business tech reporter, I would pitch in stories about gaming companies amid my usual weekly commentary. While arguable more people game now than back then, the sector was a lot more vibrant in terms of the number of people covering it. I think I can now count most employed games journalists in Australia on two hands.
Burnout isn’t the enemy - it’s the message, but are you ready to listen?
Everywhere I turn I hear another story about how burnt out everyone currently is. How everyone is overworked. That they’re at their breaking point. In fact, Deloitte did a survey on professionals in the workplace, stating “77% of respondents say they have experienced employee burnout at their current job”.
Is Your Smart Watch Burning You Out?
There are so many pros to the digital age that we live in these days. One being that many of us can work from anywhere at any time we like. Another being that for those of us who have a business or want to start a side hustle, it has never been easier to reach new audiences thanks to easy access to website creation tools and social media. However it comes with many cons too. For starters, it has never been easier for people to reach you 24/7.
