The 2026 election is taking place at one of the most consequential moments in our history. The future of democracy is at stake. But so is the question of what kind of society we want to be. We Iowans have long cared for our neighbors, welcomed strangers, and reached out a hand to those in need. We have treasured a sense of community where differences in income, religion, educational achievement and ethnic background are immaterial.
Labor Day has a long and storied history in the United States. Its origins lie in the great labor strikes of the 19th century and the search by workers for recognition and dignity. Workers first claimed May 1 as a labor “holiday,” unrecognized by their employers or the state, and used it to celebrate their work, to demonstrate their efforts at self-improvement and ultimately, to demand equal rights.
