Chicago Sky Go Down - no wait - SKY WIN
Chicago Sky Go Down - no wait - SKY WIN By , today at 1:50 pm Last night’s Chicago Sky game versus the Las Vegas Aces started out terrible – there is no other way to describe it. Some may have left their TV’s, screens or laptops thinking this game is already over. But NO – hang in there because this is the 2021 Champs version of the Chicago Sky and they not only came back with a vengeance, they came back and made history making up a 28 point deficit to win the game by nine points.
The B Side
The B Side By , Thursday at 11:28 pm B 1 – Chicago Bulls – started out the season with a bang, fell apart mid-to late season but made the playoffs. Fun team to watch, lots of talent when the whole team was healthy. To quote the movie On The Waterfront featuring Marlon Brando – “I coulda been a contender” truly applied to the Bulls this year, again, if the team had all of its talent healthy at one time.
WNBA Star Brittney Griner detained in Moscow since February
WNBA star Brittney Griner was arrested in Russia on suspicion of illegally bringing drugs into the country after she was searched at the airport and found with hash oil in her luggage, according to Russian news agency Tass. This story is just breaking NOW and with the horrors occurring with the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the United States’ tenuous relationship with Russia – it is a very frightening situation for Griner, her family and U.S. teammates from the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury.
Is It Just Me????
Is It Just Me???? By Sheri Warren, Thursday at 11:20 am Is it just me or is our Chicago Sky all-star Candace Parker a queen of the court? Recently named AP Female Athlete of the Year, she’s also a WNBA Champion, Gold medal Olympian and Collegiate Championship title holder and to keep it even more local – 3 time Illinois Miss Basketball from her high school days at Naperville Central…a true winner in every sense of the word.
Chicago Sky - WNBA Champions
As someone who has loved this team since its inception – yes I was very excited when it was announced that Chicago was getting a team in the WNBA some 16 years ago – yesterday marked the culmination of my dream of seeing this team win a WNBA Championship title. I’ve attended 100’s of their games and covered the team extensively in this blog with words and photos. Regrets – yes the big one – that I couldn’t attend Sunday’s game due to other work commitments.
Chicago Sky Beat Mercury BIG
Chicago Sky Win BIG By Sheri Warren, Friday at 11:52 pm Okay so my prediction that the Chicago Sky would win the WNBA Finals in a 3-game sweep didn’t come true after they lost to the Phoenix Mercury on Wednesday in overtime. BUT, and this is a big BUT – the Sky did sweep the floor with the Mercury tonight in a major blowout beating Phoenix 86-50.
Sky High, Sox Low, Bears & Blackhawks High Hopes, Cubs BOO HISS
Sky High, Sox Low, Bears & Blackhawks High Hopes, Cubs BOO HISS By Sheri Warren, Tuesday at 10:43 pm WNBA Finals are on and the Chicago Sky are ON – they look strong, fired up, cohesive and unfaltering in their drive to the 2021 title. On Sunday they won game one in fine fashion and by that I mean not only are their uniforms cool, so are all facets of their game in fine fashion. A 14 point win over the Phoenix Mercury was a true team victory with six Sky players scoring in double figures.
Chicago Sky headed to WNBA Finals
Chicago Sky Flying High By Sheri Warren, Thursday at 2:57 pm that was then... After seven years of average play and reaching the playoffs only to be knocked out on the first round, the Chicago Sky changed direction in 2021 and are now headed to the WNBA Finals. As someone who covered this team back in 2014 with our then superstar Elena Delle Donne, everyone had high hopes back then that they could go all the way. The Phoenix Mercury had other ideas and swept the Sky in three games.
Cubbie Blues
Cubbie Blues By Sheri Warren, Wednesday at 11:53 pm I got ’em, thousands of others got ’em – the Cubbie blues. Ever since the biggest three stars were unceremoniously and shockingly traded from the Cubs, I’ve felt this sadness and anger towards ownership and management. My first thought was, “how could they do this?” – and then I immediately went into anger mode feeling that the ownership was throwing in the towel on the 2021 season awful early by trading Bryant, Rizzo and Baez a few weeks ago.
S.O.S. - Sheri On Sports
Congrats to Chicago’s First Tee Leadership Summit Participants! First Tee, in partnership with PGA Tour Superstore, has announced the first-of-its-kind First Tee Leadership Summit to be held August 2-13, 2021, at West Creek Ranch in Montana. Brandon Savage (15 years old) and Madison Miller (17 years old), both from First Tee Greater Chicago are two of 40 teens who will take part in this special Summit.
We The People
We The People By Sheri Warren, Sunday at 11:25 pm “This is what it feels like to be 100 percent” – declared beloved actor/comedian Bill Murray before singing Take Me Out To The Ballgame during the 7th inning stretch at the June 11th Chicago Cubs game – heralding in the return of full capacity crowds on the north side. This was the first time since the fall of 2019 before the pandemic hit, that Wrigley Field could open to 100 percent capacity.
The Good, the Sad, the Ugly
The Good, the Sad, the Ugly By Sheri Warren, today at 11:09 pm Let’s start with the Good: The Chicago White Sox are in 1st place in their division, the Chicago Cubs are only a 1/2 game back of first place in their division and are up by 5 in tonight’s game against the Padres. Life is good so far for fans and the teams on both the north and south side – a rarity that BOTH teams are playing great in the same season….SO FAR.
Welcome Home Candace Parker & Congrats HOF inductee Tamika Catchings
Welcome Home Candace Parker & Congrats HOF inductee Tamika Catchings By Sheri Warren, today at 10:23 pm Tamika and I catching up at a Sky game in Chicago For two of the greatest to ever play basketball, it’s been a very good 2021 so far thanks to some very formative years playing hoops at all levels from high school to the pros to the Olympics.
Chicago Blackhawks Eating Crow...So Far
Chicago Blackhawks Eating Crow...So Far By Sheri Warren, Sunday at 11:46 pm 3 games into the 2021 season, the Chicago Blackhawks have scored a grand total of 5 goals while their opponents in the three games have scored 5 goals in EACH game. So far it seems like the Hawks are eating crow - which is a testament to letting go a future hall-of-famer and seeing the results of said move. I hope the decision makers are feeling some of this pain and are willing to admit they should be eating crow.
Life in 2020 and the Chicago Bears - No Laughing Matter
Life in 2020 and the Chicago Bears - No Laughing Matter By Sheri Warren, Thursday at 11:36 pm To my fellow Illinoisans...I get it because I got it, too. Quarantine Brain - brain fog - No restaurants, no bars, no movie theaters, no plays, no concerts, no sports early on, no parties. Nothing to stimulate our brains and help distract us from our desire to socialize with fellow human beings outside our personal bubbles.
USA Today Names Coaching Legend Pat Summitt to "100 Women of the Century"
USA Today Names Coaching Legend Pat Summitt to "100 Women of the Century" By Sheri Warren, today at 9:59 am Coach Pat Summitt w/championship trophies For one of my sports heroes - an honor I wish could have been bestowed while she was still with us but it's nice to know her many many accomplishments live on....this one's for you Coach! Following is the story from USA Today...
There But for the Grace of GOLF Go I...
With no sports to write about for months and none to watch on TV or barely any to participate in - only golf has remained a constant in my life. If it wasn't for this little four letter word -GOLF-I would be a screaming looney tunes human what with all the insanity going on in our world since late February. No March Madness, no hockey playoffs, no spring training baseball games, no NBA, WNBA, pro golf, auto racing, horse racing, soccer....NOTHING.
Tamika Catchings - Basketball Goddess, Olympian and Humanitarian
When Tamika Catchings (’00, ’02) played basketball at Tennessee she always looked to her coach, the legendary Pat Summitt (’76), but not just to learn her plays. “I used to watch Pat when she didn’t know I was watching her,” Catchings says. “She was so humble and she never saw a stranger. Everybody who worked in a facility, she knew all of them and always spoke to everybody.
Oregon's Sabrina Ionescu Secures her Place in the NCAA Record Books
Oregon's Sabrina Ionescu Secures her Place in the NCAA Record Books By Sheri Warren, today at 11:04 am University of Oregon star basketball player, Sabrina Ionescu, delivered another masterful performance and this one was one for the NCAA record books. Ionescu did so by becoming the first college basketball player -- male or female -- to have 2,000 points, 1,000 assists and 1,000 rebounds in her career.
LPGA Tour Player Suzann Pettersen's letter to her son
Dear Herman, My precious gift, you were far too young to know what was happening or why but you were there with your father and me during the final week of my full-time career as a professional golfer. We were all in Scotland, September 2019, at a place called Gleneagles for the Solheim Cup. I’ll get to the details in a minute.
Meet The Chicago Cop Who's Enshrined in Baseball's Hall of Fame
Here is the wonderful story of a 20-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department and how SHE ended up in the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY. Back in 1994, Pam Schaffrath tried out for and won a spot on the roster of the Colorado Silver Bullets. The Silver Bullets became a reality arising from an idea by Club President and former Atlanta Braves Executive Bob Hope and were sponsored by the Coors Brewing Company.
Improving Retention at Your Club
image by shutterstock Most health club managers and directors recognize the need to not only attract new members to their club, but more importantly, keep the members they already serve. While committing time, attention and resources to the marketing ideas designed to attract potential new members to the club is critical, well-thought-out strategies to ensure the longevity of each current membership might be even more important.
March Lotto Madness
With March Madness in full swing, sitting in front of the TV and watching many of the games is a popular pastime for many around the country. The games of the men's and women's NCAA tournament run are often exciting as heck and go down to the wire with many top seeds doing what they're supposed to do by winning and others losing to lower seeds and busting brackets along the way.
The Bears KICKED Out of the Playoffs
The Bears KICKED Out of the Playoffs By Sheri Warren, today at 9:21 pm Remind me again why we parted ways with Robbie Gould? An unexpected and wildly successful Bears season ended with a thud off the upright and then the crossbar and tumbled the wrong way onto the field instead of over the goal post...and just like that the post season for the Bears is done.
An Olympian's Story - from Rape to Redemption and so much more
An Olympian's Story - from Rape to Redemption and so much more By Sheri Warren, Wednesday at 11:46 pm This is a must-see video from Olympic Gold Medalist swimmer Nancy Hogshead-Makar - a story of rape, redemption, and a golden warrior's tale. Thank you facebook.com/TheRealAthleteTPT videos for sharing this story with us all. http://www.facebook.com/TheRealAthleteTPT/videos/1114865142011572/
Da Cubs...Da Bitter End
It was a crazy 2018 season for the Chicago Cubs - a very good one with 95 wins and a great year compared to many other MLB teams. The team reached the post-season for the fourth consecutive year and made history with this stat for the franchise. Even with balky offense in many games, the Cubs hung in there and made it an exciting year for their fans...until the bitter and unexpected end.
Building the ‘Perfect’ Sales Team
What type of people make up a perfect team? Is it the most qualified or most experienced in their field? Possibly, but not necessarily. The best teams are made up of those who possess the core values of the company, believe a win/win only exists when the team benefits regardless of who is individually rewarded, and understand the ultimate mission before them.
Big Kick-Off for LPGA's KPMG/Women's PGA Championship next week
Major champion Phil Mickelson joins LPGA Tour star Mariah Stackhouse and Chicago Professional athletes for the KPMG Windy City Skills Challenge; Monday, June 25 at 3:00 p.m. CDT WHAT: Kicking off the week of the 2018 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, KPMG will host an interactive event benefiting local youth at Chicago’s historic Soldier Field.
Great Dame: Laura Davies Wins Inaugural U.S. Sr. Women's Open at Chicago Golf Club
The scene was the Chicago Golf Club in Wheaton, IL - the event was the inaugural U.S. Senior Women's Open Championship...and it was a trip back in time for many who came out to watch former favorite LPGA players in the 50+ age group compete once again. And, it was awesome. England's golf royalty, Dame Laura Davies, came to play and proved what a great Dame she is by leaving the rest of the field in her wake and winning by 10 strokes. An absolutely awesome performance from one of the game's greats.
Patrick Sharp retires
Happy Retirement Patrick Sharp - sorry to see you go but it sure was fun while it lasted. Speaking of the Blackhawks - what a downer - first time not in the playoffs for 10 years - this is a real drag not having our Blackhawks even make it into round one of the playoffs. Bummer. And what has happened to Corey Crawford? He's been out since December with that "upper body" injury.
Calling All Women Golfers
Calling All Women Golfers By Sheri Warren, today at 10:33 pm As someone who belonged to this group for many years and met some very special ladies who also share my love for golf ( I better since it's my career!) - I wanted to make sure you knew about them and had the scoop on the beginning events for the group and their league line-ups.
2018 Winter Olympics Kick-Off; Let My Olympics Mania Begin
Up until 1992 the Winter and Summer Olympic Games were held in the same years, but in compliance with a 1986 decision by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to place the Summer and Winter Games on separate four-year cycles in alternating even-numbered years, the next Winter Olympics after 1992 was in 1994. This allows all of us Olympics watching junkies the opportunity to go manic every two years instead of every four years.
MeToo, Breanna Stewart,
I remember what he smelled like. Cigarettes and dirt. Kind of metallic, too. He was a construction worker and he smoked. You can’t really wash those smells off. My family was close. I used to sleep over at relatives’ houses all the time. He lived in one of the houses I slept at the most. There was a big couch in the living room and a smaller loveseat under a window that looked out on the front lawn. I’d stay up late, watching TV on the couch after everyone went to sleep.
Rizzo Foundation, LPGA Tour, Symetra Tour
*Chicago Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo attended a ribbon cutting ceremony at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital on Tuesday. The ceremony was to commemorate The Anthony Rizzo Family Foundation's $3.5 million contribution to Lurie Children's Hospital back in May. Okay so if you didn't love Anthony before, which many of us do, you just have to admit this guy is special both on the field and off.
Welcome to Chicago Mitchell Trubisky!
I'm not one to watch an entire pre-season Bears football game (especially with their record the last few years) but there was something that made me watch the whole game for the Bears home opener last Thursday night - and boy am I glad I did! We all got to see the unveiling of what we all hope will be our quarterback of the future Mitchell Trubisky. He put on a show and this rookie wowed the crowd, his teammates and everyone watching on TV.
Cubs, LPGA Tour, Chisor
Chicago Cubs: Get pounded today by the Pirates 14-3 as they head into the All-Star break. Good thing they get a break because the 2016 World Series champs are certainly not the same team that won it all last year with a record of 43-45 to fall 5 1/2 games behind the first-place Brewers and to add insult to injury, the Cardinals have pulled into a tie with them for second place in the division.
S.O.S. - Sheri On Sports
Chicago Bulls - Jimmy Butler traded to Timberwolves - our best player traded away and not too happy about it and neither are many of us....the face of the franchise??? Great hair, great player...WTF - Bye Bye Bye Chicago Blackhawks - The Breadman - Artemi Panarin traded to Columbus Blue Jackets - Panarin who paired so well with Patrick Kane the last several years. Gone is the Rosen bread company promotional opportunity that was linked to Artemi the last couple of years.
Chicago Sky to Welcome One-Millionth Fan June 18th
Feeling lucky???? You might be the Chicago Sky's one-millionth FAN - see the details below and see you at the game! The Chicago Sky are projected to welcome the one-millionth fan at Allstate Arena on Sunday, June 18 when they take on the Indiana Fever. To celebrate this momentous milestone, the Sky will randomly select one fan in attendance to receive a pair of courtside Sky season tickets for the 2018 season, a customized Sky jersey, autographed basketball and a Sky experience.
Chicago Sky, Pokey Chatman Indiana Fever
The Chicago Sky fell to the Indiana Fever tonight at the Allstate Arena with the final tally being Indy 91 and the Sky 79...dropping the Sky to a 2-9 record on the season. It hasn't been a pretty year for the Sky with new coaches, loss of a league MVP (I won't say the name Elena Delle Donne since it ticks off the current Sky players to no end) and new faces on the team along with some veterans.
Revamped Chicago Sky Lose Season Opener to Minnesota Lynx
It was a tall order to ask of this overhauled Chicago Sky team to win against one of the best teams in the WNBA in their season opener. The Sky made a good game of it for the most part considering so much has changed since the 2016 season - from top to bottom. New coaches, many many new players and the loss of a WNBA MVP in Elena Delle Donne who requested a trade to Washington so she could be closer to her home state of Delaware.
S.O.S. - Sheri On Sports
Deja vu - flashback - throwback - glad you're back - here's to having the awesome opportunity to see some of the LPGA Tour greats back in action this past weekend at the Red Nose Day Walgreens Charity Championship held in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin at the beautiful Geneva National Resort Player Course.
S.O.S. - Sheri On Sports
Girls in the Game has a wonderful opportunity as the LPGA will make a $10,000 donation if we can get 100 volunteers for this summer's LPGA KPMG Championship! The tournament is being staged at Olympia Fields Country Club in Olympia Fields, IL, June 27-July 2.
UConn Women Lose, Mississippi State Wins
I thought I'd never see a game as great as a few years ago when Louisville upset the Baylor Bears featuring the mighty (and mighty tall 6'8") Brittney Griner. At the time, many called it the greatest upset ever in the women's NCAA tournament - that is until tonight when a player nicknamed Itty Bitty took a last second shot and ended not only UConn's NCAA run, but their season AND an 111 game winning streak.
Lexi Thompson, LPGA ANA Inspiration Tournament
Would someone at the USGA and the R&A PLEASE come up with a rule that tournament outcomes cannot be decided by TV viewers who call in with possible rules violations - especially when the violation occurred the previous day. Lexi Thompson of the LPGA was assessed a 4 STROKE penalty for an unintentionally mis-marked ball on the green in Saturday's round - and it was not enforced until SUNDAY'S final round when she was 4 shots up and was notified by LPGA officials between the 12th & 13th holes.
LPGA Tour - Legends Tour
For all the golf fans out there - some great news! The LPGA's Legends Tour is coming to Lake Geneva, Wisconsin the week of May 18-21, 2017. They are currently seeking volunteers so anyone interested can find out more information on the LPGA's web site (LPGA.com) and click on the Legends Tour link at the bottom of the home page and it will give you all the tournament information. It is being played at the Geneva National Resort and is called the Red Nose Day Walgreens Charity Championship.
