Modern sugarcane cultivars (Saccharum spp.) are important sugar and energy crops worldwide and developed primarily through interspecific hybridization between S. officinarum (2n = 80, x = 10) and S. spontaneum (2n = 40–128, x = 8, 9, 10). They have variable somatic chromosome numbers (2n = 100–130), high polyploidy levels (8–13), aneuploid, and highly complex, heterogenous architectures (Huang et al. 2026).
Sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) is essential for global sugar and bioenergy production, but its yield and quality are severely threatened by fungal diseases (Ling et al. 2025). Plant defence against pathogens is primarily regulated by transcription factors (TFs) (Buscaill and Rivas 2014), among which WRKYs can act as positive or negative immune regulators (Huang et al. 2022).
