Does Density Aggravate the COVID-19 Pandemic?
The COVID-19 pandemic is a perfect case study to investigate the relationship between density and the spread of highly contagious infectious diseases. This novel coronavirus outbreak was first recorded in Wuhan (China) in December 2019 (Cascella et al., 2020). In less than 4 months, it has spread to more than 212 countries and territories around the world and was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO) on March 11, 2020 (WHO, 2020).
How Cities Are Taking Action on COVID-19
Photo by Smederevac iStock/Getty Images Plus. By Shima Hamidi and Keshia M. Pollack Porter Since the outbreak of COVID-19 hit the U.S., life has changed drastically in communities across the country as state and local governments have issued stay-at-home orders and closures of all but essential businesses and services.
Urban sprawl and the emergence of food deserts in the USA

Longitudinal Analysis of Transit's Land Use Multiplier in Portland (OR)
Historically, research examining the role of public transit in reducing vehicle miles traveled (VMT) and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions has focused directly on mode shifts from driving to transit occurring as a result of transit investments. Such research typically shows only modest reductions in vehicle travel (Arrington & Cervero, 2008 Arrington, G. B., & Cervero, R. (2008). Effects of TOD on housing, parking, and travel: TCRP Report 128. Washington, DC: Transportation Research Board.

Promoting Upward Mobility Through Transportation Policy
Transportation costs, after housing, are the biggest expenses in the budgets of most American households particularly for those settled along the urban fringe. Less costly alternatives to automobile travel, particularly public transit, are typically much less accessible and thus largely impractical in suburban and exurban locations relative to central cities.
Does urban sprawl hold down upward mobility?
Contrary to the general perception, the United States has a much more class-bound society than other wealthy countries. The chance of upward mobility for Americans is just half that of the citizens of the Denmark and many other European countries.
Urban sprawl leads to more fatal crashes, while denser areas experience higher rates of accidents which cause injuries.
Is urban sprawl good for us? Recent years have seen a growing debate over the costs and benefits of urban sprawl compared with denser communities in areas such as public health and environmental sustainability. Using data from nearly 1,000 metropolitan counties across the U.S., Reid Ewing and Shima Hamidi examine the relationship between sprawl and fatal crashes.
