Interview

Why did you become a journalist?

I chose to become a journalist because I’ve always been passionate about storytelling and shedding light on important issues. Throughout my career, from covering biopharma events at Informa Connect to documenting homelessness at Goldsmiths, I’ve found that journalism allows me to not only inform but also engage people on topics that matter. Whether it’s uncovering complex financial stories or sharing human experiences, the power of journalism to influence and create change is what drives me every day. My experience in both print and digital media has only deepened my commitment to the craft.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

I worked in my school newspaper where I contributed as a writer and editor, covering a variety of topics including local events, student issues, and school initiatives. I gained valuable experience in reporting, editing, and meeting tight deadlines, while also developing a strong understanding of journalistic standards and ethics. This early exposure to journalism laid the foundation for my career and honed my skills in storytelling, content creation, and working as part of a collaborative team.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

I’m proud of every piece of work I produce, but I’m particularly proud of my event reporting stories and those where I’ve had the opportunity to interview C-suite professionals. These stories allow me to gain unique insights directly from industry leaders and share what’s happening behind the scenes in companies, offering a deeper understanding of their strategies and innovations. It’s a rewarding experience to bring these exclusive perspectives to the forefront, especially when they have a significant impact on the industry.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

My advice to aspiring journalists is to always pick a niche and specialize in it. By focusing on a specific area, whether it’s healthcare, finance, or any other sector, you can build expertise that sets you apart in a competitive industry. It's also crucial to stay adaptable—embrace digital tools like SEO, analytics, and multimedia storytelling, as they are key to engaging modern audiences. And above all, persistence is key—never stop chasing stories and refining your craft, as journalism is a field that rewards those who are dedicated and passionate about their work.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

One of the most common misconceptions about biopharma and healthcare journalism is that it’s solely about writing dry, technical reports. In reality, it requires a deep understanding of complex topics like drug development, regulatory processes, and financial trends, while also presenting them in a way that is accessible and engaging for a wide audience. It’s not just about covering facts—it’s about telling stories that highlight innovation, industry challenges, and the human impact of healthcare advancements. A successful biopharma journalist blends technical expertise with compelling storytelling to make complex subjects both informative and relatable.
