Opinion | Joe Biden and the Rise of Monopolistic Surveillance Capitalism
In June 2020, the surveillance powers of the Patriot Act —an act introduced by George W. Bush against the threat of Islamist terrorism on domestic soil— finally expired after almost 19 years. The law allowed the FBI to go spy on American citizens without a warrant. But this may be the only good news on this front, and not for long. With the Capitol Hill protests, and a stupid LARP (Live Action Role Play) resulting in the breach of the US Congress, domestic surveillance is likely to be back.
The Myth of the 99%
When I published The New Class War: Saving Democracy from the Managerial Elite in January 2020 (February 2020 in the UK), I naively expected what passes for the intellectual left to engage with my arguments in a respectful if critical way. After all, the targets of my criticism were technocratic neoliberalism and demagogic populism, both of which are harshly criticized by many leftists. My book is a defense of the New Deal and a polemic in favor of organized labor.
Breaking Down Biden’s Potential Cabinet & Transition Team
Politico’s list can be found here. It should come as no surprise that Biden, when compared to Trump, was by far the favorite of the capitalist elites who caused the 2008 crash, and the neocons who led their country administration-after-administration into new foreign wars. Of course, Biden will reward his posh patrons while doing his very best to sideline the laughable progressives who gullibly cast their votes for the candidate of “harm reduction” and “resistance”.
The New Cultural Revolution
The protest movements that have upended American life following the death of George Floyd have stupefied both pundits and ordinary citizens. In some ways, what we are witnessing is unique. But it is useful to compare this civic upheaval to another one, the Chinese Cultural Revolution that began in 1966.
The Case for a Left Patriotism
There is often discussion amongst various self-described leftist circles on the ill-effects of Western liberal humanitarian intervention, a reckoning with the malaise of colonialism infected upon various countries around the world.

A Left-Right Populist Agenda To Take Jobs Back From China
A new Cold War is likely, and a workers-first strategy is one of the few things that could forestall it. The neoliberal era of global governance has given us a centrist establishment in favor of free-market fundamentalism, austerity, open borders, and political correctness. It is far right on economic policy often displaying the worst aspects of woke virtue signaling.
UPDATE: Embattled Liberal MP apologizes for using photos from U.S. detention camps to attack Conservatives
Liberal MP Adam Vaughan compared Doug Ford’s immigration policy to ICE camps in the U.S. in a now-deleted tweet. He was quickly rebuked. Update: According to Global News, Adam Vaughan has apologized for his tweets. “The children of refugees are in profoundly vulnerable situations across the planet and here in Canada. Earlier this week, I criticized the Conservative government of Ontario on this point over Twitter.
Erin O'Toole calls for "mandatory minimum" sentences
Shortly after Andrew Scheer’s accidental Conservative leadership victory, I was having beers with some dejected party faithful, who bemoaned the outcome and their fraught involvement with Dragon’s Den investment mogul Kevin O’Leary’s abandoned campaign. My drinking compadres could best be described as the millennial generation of hardcore Conservative supporters.
#CNNisTrash trends on Twitter following Democratic debate
Media, and people in general, have a tendency to make everything seem like a doomsday scenario. This could be for a number of reasons. Perhaps, as humans, we have a tendency to see the negative while ignoring progress. This is certainly the case with many social justice movements, which seem to refuse to acknowledge the large strides made in the past few decades. While of course things are not perfect, and there are still things to be improved on, a lot has gotten really good, really fast.
Over 91.8 percent of Canadians said they were "comfortable" if their next-door neighbour were to be lesbian, gay, or bisexual.
Canada already has a political party that supports carbon taxes, expanding the managerial bureaucracy, giving more of our tax dollars to foreign countries, shackling the economy with endless regulations, taking rights away from law-abiding gun owners while ignoring gang crime, endlessly increasing immigration levels without debate, showing weakness towards China, serving the elitist political and corporate class at the expense of Canadians, and sacrificing our own energy sector at the altar...
Albertans feel worse off, spend less: poll
Canada’s economy is in a bit of a difficult situation. As we recently saw, Canada’s national economy made a step backwards by one tenth of one percent this past October, as real gross domestic product shrank for the first time in eight months. According to figures by Statistics Canada, several sectors made marginal declines, with manufacturing down for the fourth time in five months dropping by 1.4 percent, and transportation equipment manufacturing slipping at a hefty 2.5 percent.
Veteran wakes out of a coma just in time for Christmas
Canada’s manufacturing sector has—like manufacturing in many of our Western allies—been on a long-term decline. That decline is due in large part to the corrupt corporate and business elites, who sold us out for cheap labour in China, in effect exporting our manufacturing capacity to foreign nations. As a result, entire sections of our nation have been hollowed out, with good-paying jobs often replaced with either low-paying precarious work or by nothing at all.

New Montreal board game rewards corruption
A Montreal man is being praised as a hero after his bold actions saved roughly a dozen people from being seriously injured, or worse. Erick Marciano was driving his SUV to a meeting Tuesday afternoon in Montreal’s downtown core, when he saw a car speed through a red light, with Montreal police hot on the vehicle’s tail. When he saw the suspect vehicle making a sharp U-turn in front of him toward a crowd of roughly a dozen pedestrian and city workers, Marciano says he knew he had to act.

Jody Wilson-Raybould is 2019's newsmaker of the year
The 2019 federal election had a great deal of uncertainty. Up until the polling stations had closed, Trudeau’s Liberals and Scheer’s Conservatives had been level on points, with the other parties scrambling for third place. However, it soon dawned on Ottawa’s broadcasters that nothing of any interest had occurred. The Liberal’s had won their minority, the Conservatives had failed to convince anyone of their competence outside of the Prairies, and the NDP was, unsurprisingly, swept away in Quebec.

Jewish student targeted by McGill student government in alleged anti-Semitic bullying
Anti-Semitism is an escalating global problem, and no objective observer denies it. There are many contributing factors, but a common two-ply thread is the demonization of the state of Israel as an all-evil oppressor and the Palestinians as an all-innocent oppressed people. The obsession rises to its crescendo on university campuses, where fulltime hate-fuelled activists plow their Israel-delegitimization furrow without surcease via the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement (BDS).

Amidst calls for proactive measures on the global “climate crisis”, 11,258 scientists from 153 nations agreed with the findings in a recent BioScience publication. They warn of “untold suffering due to the climate crisis”. Unless we commit to reproducing less, “transition” from fossil fuels, cut meat from our diets and end deforestation, the effects will only worsen, according to the publication. The Liberal Party dogma echoes these sentiments.
DON CHERRY: "I wish I had used different words"
One evening our neighbours came over for dinner. They asked my parents, “Where are you from?” My father’s response, “We are from Poland, but now we are Canadian.” A proud patriotic daughter moment right there. My parents raised me with Polish traditions but moved to Canada–nay, fled to Canada–to give my sister and I a better life. In Canada, we have freedoms and a great quality of life that not everyone around the world is fortunate to have.

Scheer tells Trudeau to recall Parliament on Nov. 25
After years of Elizabeth May saying that she would never run outside of Nova Scotia, the Green Party Leader packed her bags and moved to Vancouver Island. The Green Party apparatus, in those days composed of hippies and homeopaths, believed vehemently that the island would be the epicentre of where a “green wave” would be triggered; the faultline of where their leader would change Canada forever. Pundits happily bought into these prophecies.
