Krauklis wave propagation within a complex fracture system: Modeling via a two-dimensional time-harmonic boundary element method
Topics Sound source perception, Waveguides, Wave power, Elastodynamics, Wave mechanics, Wave propagation, Body waves, Numerical methods, Network theory, Boundary element methods Unlike a solid containing small distributed pores, permeable fractures allow propagation of fluid pressure waves over many wavelengths. Such guided waves are called Krauklis waves (KWs) (e.g., Korneev, 2008; Krauklis, 1962).
Sparse reconstruction of sound field using pattern-coupled Bayesian compressive sensing
Conventional near-field acoustic holography based on compressive sensing either does not fully exploit the underlying block-sparse structures of the signal or suffers from a mismatch between the actual and predefined block structure due to the lack of prior information about block partitions, resulting in poor accuracy in sound field reconstruction. In this paper, a pattern-coupled Bayesian compressive sensing method is proposed for sparse reconstruction of sound fields.
Pulse duration, frequency band, and sweep direction effects on crosstalk in wideband backscattering measurements
Topics Echosounders, Acoustical properties, Nonlinear acoustic propagation, Picosecond ultrasonics, Speed of sound, Acoustic waves, Signal processing, Signal-to-noise ratio, Numerical methods, Nonlinear optical processes Fisheries acoustics broadband echosounders utilize frequency-modulated pulses, which provide advantages, but also some challenges compared to the narrowband echosounders depending on the application.
Low-frequency non-reciprocal sound propagation features in thermoacoustic waveguide
Thermoacoustic waveguides are systems of hollow tubes and thermally graded porous segments that can operate as active materials where acoustic waves receive energy from an external heat source. This work demonstrates that by adjusting the pore geometry several unique low-frequency propagation features arise from the complex-valued band structure of periodic thermoacoustic waveguides that reflect into the acoustic pressure field within finite-length systems.
Adversarial multi-task underwater acoustic target recognition: Toward robustness against various influential factors
Underwater acoustic target recognition based on passive sonar faces numerous challenges in practical maritime applications. One of the main challenges lies in the susceptibility of signal characteristics to diverse environmental conditions and data acquisition configurations, which can lead to instability in recognition systems.
Learning English vowels: The effects of different phonetic training modes on Arabic learners' production and perception
This study investigated the effect of different types of phonetic training on potential changes in the production and perception of English vowels by Arabic learners of English. Forty-six Arabic learners of English were randomly assigned to one of three high variability vowel training programs: Perception training (High Variability Phonetic Training), Production training, and a Hybrid Training program (production and perception training).
Amplifying the power density in thermoacoustic systems using a spring component
This paper deals with the introduction of a spring component into a thermoacoustic system to increase the power density. This enables more compact and cheaper thermoacoustic systems. A theoretical and experimental study is presented to demonstrate the effect of the introduction of a spring component to amplify the thermal power in a thermoacoustic heat pump. The required spring constant is determined using an electrical circuit analogy model and a DeltaEC model of an existing heat pump.
Effect of frequency compression on fricative perception between normal-hearing English and Mandarin listeners
High-frequency speech information is susceptible to inaccurate perception in even mild to moderate forms of hearing loss. Some hearing aids employ frequency-lowering methods such as nonlinear frequency compression (NFC) to help hearing-impaired individuals access high-frequency speech information in more accessible lower-frequency regions.
Phase space representation of sound field excited by a noise source in underwater acoustic waveguide
The analysis of the field excited in a waveguide by a point noise source is performed using the phase space representation of this field given by the distribution of its amplitude in the depth–angle–time space. The transition from the traditional description of the field amplitude as a function of depth and time to phase space representation is performed using the coherent state expansion developed in quantum mechanics.
Reducing contaminating noise effects when calculating low-boom loudness levels
During NASA X-59 quiet supersonic aircraft community response tests, low-boom recordings will contain contaminating noise from instrumentation and ambient acoustical sources. This noise can inflate sonic boom perception metrics by several decibels. This paper discusses the development and comparison of robust lowpass filtering techniques for removing contaminating noise effects from low-boom recordings.
Recovering speech intelligibility with deep learning and multiple microphones in noisy-reverberant situations for people using cochlear implants
To answer these research questions, we performed three development and evaluation steps: Speech-enhancement algorithms: In Sec. II, we first describe the implementation of deep-learning-based speech enhancement algorithms using single- or multi-microphone behind-the-ear (BTE) recordings; objective comparison: Performance was then compared for three algorithms with either one microphone, two unilateral microphones, or six bilateral microphones.
