The Australian national anthem will always be rooted in racism
The Australian national anthem is a symbol of ongoing colonialism and occupation. Even though the words ‘young and free’ have been replaced with ‘one and free,’ the anthem is and always will be rooted in racist and problematic assumptions. After 233 years of colonial occupation, now is the right time to change one word that doesn’t fit well with current political attitudes?
NIAA needs to be led by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
From Walbunja man and CEO of the Byamee Institute, Simon Jovanovic. National Indigenous Times welcomes letters to the Editor. Please send letters to Hannah Cross at editor@nit.com.au. Dear Ms Cross, I am writing to clarify and point out the assumptions and problematic statements made about the lack of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leadership and over-representation of non-Aboriginal and non-Torres Strait Islander leadership in the National Indigenous Australian Agency (NIAA).
The problems with ‘racialised’ Indigenous employment policies
Since the late 1970's, we've seen an emergence of racialised policies targeted at increasing the representation of Indigenous people in workplaces. Indigenous refers to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians. These policies have continued a long tradition that frames Indigenous people as a different 'race', a deficit disadvantaged minority. At face value these mean well. The policies explain that Indigenous people are employed to deliver services for the Indigenous community.
IN FOCUS: NAIDOC WEEK
Indigenous policy in focus Every year in July, NAIDOC Week celebrates the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This year’s theme is ‘Voice. Treaty. Truth. Let’s work together for a shared future.’ This NAIDOC Week, Policy Forum is highlighting Indigenous policy issues. With our special In Focus section, we would like to recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voices, and encourage debate on Indigenous policy amongst all Australians.
