RIXS observation of bond-directional excitations in the Kitaev material Na 2 IrO 3
Abstract Spin-orbit coupling locks spin direction and spatial orientation and generates, in semi-classical magnets, a local spin easy-axis and associated ordering. Quantum spin-1/2’s defy this fate: rather than spins becoming locally anisotropic, the spin-spin interactions do. Consequently interactions become dependent on the spatial orientation of bonds between spins, prime theoretical examples of which are Kitaev magnets.
Two-dimensional coherent spectroscopy of CoNb 2 O 6
Abstract With recent advances in terahertz (THz) sources and detection, two-dimensional coherent spectroscopy (2DCS), which allows one to probe nonlinear responses, now reaches the meV regime relevant for quasiparticle excitations in magnetic materials. This opens a promising route to reveal many-body phenomena that evade linear-response probes. To date, most experimental applications have focused on classical magnets, and a solid demonstration in a quantum magnet has yet to be established.
Robust Teleportation of a Surface Code and Cascade of Topological Quantum Phase Transitions
Popular Summary The concept of teleportation has transformed from an idea of fiction to an accepted notion of science, with foundational work in quantum mechanics by Bennett and others in the 1980s. Starting in the late 1990s, it was first realized in tabletop experiments to longer and longer distances, first involving glass-fiber connections and, more recently, even links to Earth-orbiting satellites.
Nishimori's Cat: Stable Long-Range Entanglement from Finite-Depth Unitaries and Weak Measurements
In the field of monitored quantum circuits, it has remained an open question whether finite-time protocols for preparing long-range entangled states lead to phases of matter that are stable to gate imperfections, that can convert projective into weak measurements. Here, we show that in certain cases, long-range entanglement persists in the presence of weak measurements, and gives rise to novel forms of quantum criticality.
Spin-valley magnetism on the triangular moir\'e lattice with SU(4) breaking interactions
Abstract The discovery of correlated insulating states in moiré heterostructures has renewed the interest in strongly coupled electron systems where spin and valley (or layer) degrees of freedom are intertwined. In the strong-coupling limit, such systems can be effectively described by SU(4) spin-valley models akin to Kugel-Khomskii models long studied in the context of spin-orbit coupled materials.
Order by disorder in classical kagome antiferromagnets with chiral interactions
Abstract The Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the kagome lattice is an archetypal instance of how large ground-state degeneracies arise, and how they may get resolved by thermal and quantum fluctuations. Augmenting the Heisenberg model by chiral spin interactions has proved to be of particular interest in the discovery of certain chiral quantum spin liquids.
Transmon platform for quantum computing challenged by chaotic fluctuations - Nature Communications
Abstract From the perspective of many-body physics, the transmon qubit architectures currently developed for quantum computing are systems of coupled nonlinear quantum resonators. A certain amount of intentional frequency detuning (‘disorder’) is crucially required to protect individual qubit states against the destabilizing effects of nonlinear resonator coupling.
