Book reviews from the Ruth Enlow Library
All Creatures Great and Small By James Herriot Published by Bantam/ St Martin’s Press Reviewed by Lori Stemple There are a few books that I reread periodically, and this one is the first book of my favorite series. Herriot has changed names and locations in his books, but they are inspired by his real-life experiences as a veterinarian in 1930s–1950s Yorkshire.
Five Favourites: Books on Bond
Books on Bond 5 – Ian Fleming, by Andrew Lycett, 1995. Lycett is an accomplished and celebrated literary biographer; his books on Kipling, Dylan Thomas and Wilkie Collins are close to definitive. He brings the same levels of research and insight to his book on Fleming, with no stone unturned. If sometimes the detail is overwhelming, this remains the most complete biography by some distance.
Perceptive Travel
Perceptive Travel Book Reviews December 2020 by Susan Griffith In this issue: A lost region of Europe stretching from the North Sea to Switzerland, a painful account of making a new life on a Scottish island with only nature for company, and an inspiring selection of adventure ideas for children and their parents.
Book Review: “Lotharingia”
A very long time ago, but also for a very long time, there was a third country between what is now France and what is now Germany. Today, this area is divided among a number of countries – Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Eastern France, Western Germany, and Switzerland. Parts of this area were known for a time as “Burgundy.” But originally this area was called “Lotharingia,” in honor of Charlemagne’s grandson, who once ruled the region.
A Mess of Tiny Principalities
A Mess of Tiny Principalities Lotharingia: A Personal History of Europe’s Lost Country by Simon Winder Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 504 pp., $30.00 Prisma Archivo/AlamyLouis the Pious (right) blessing the division of the Carolingian Empire in 843 into West Francia, Lotharingia, and East Francia; from the Chroniques des rois de France, fifteenth century Flat on the floor, England lies enlaced in the serpents of its own European nightmares.
Civic Nationalism Or Mob Rule?
Scottish nationalism has destroyed civility north of the border, putting journalists in the firing line Scotland Screen UK Politics 28/04/2015 SNP hate figure: Faisal Islam, the political editor of Sky News (photo: ITN) If the media were the rat race and snake pit of popular imagination, Faisal Islam would have chosen a different career. Conscientious, serious and cheerful, the political editor of Sky News would never have stayed in journalism and would never have wanted to stay either.
Danubia: A Personal History of Habsburg Europe
A charmingly personal history of Hapsburg Europe, as lively as it is informative, by the author of Germania For centuries much of Europe and the Holy Roman Empire was in the royal hands of the very peculiar Habsburg family. An unstable mixture of wizards, obsessives, melancholics, bores, musicians and warriors, they saw off—through luck, guile and sheer mulishness—any number of rivals, until finally packing up in 1918.
The ‘Dark Ages’ Weren’t As Dark As We Thought
There can be few more damning or more useless terms than “the Dark Ages.” They sound fun in an orcs‐and‐elves sort of way and suggest a very low benchmark from which we have since, as a race, raised ourselves up into the light—with the present day using as its soundtrack the last movement of Beethoven’s Ninth. But the damage the term does is immense. A simple little mental test is just to quickly imagine a European scene from that era. Now: was the sun shining? Of course not.
Medieval Innovations | Simon Winder
In the High Middle Ages, an era that devotes itself to conjuring up vast churches and palaces and excels at great intellectual and religious movements, it is good to focus first on a couple of small objects. The first is really tiny—a spherical lattice about the size of a Christmas-tree ornament, made in one of the Meuse towns, perhaps Dinant. Made from chiseled brass, it was designed to burn incense.

Simon Winder Author Page
Simon is also responsible for much of the great classic and contemporary foreign fiction published by Penguin that is so popular with many customers at Foyles. Given Simon's vast knowledge of literature from many nations, we were delighted by Simon's suggestion that he put together a selection of his favourite fiction by Germans and about Germany to mark the paperback publication of Germania.
Nezahrnuje přívalem dat, spíš nabízí lidské portréty jednotlivých zajímavých členů rodu, především králů a císařů, a zasazuje je do kontextu doby a dění.
Europe, a Continent of Refugees
LONDON — At the heart of Europe’s confused response to the refugee crisis is a feeling, largely unexpressed but still quite palpable, that these desperate, robbed, half-starving Syrians are in some way a contaminant, that to allow them in will result in Europe’s getting something horrible and staining on its fingers — but also that somehow Europe is “full.” This is not just knee-jerk racism.
Opinion | If Franz Ferdinand Had Lived
FOR over 25 years, Archduke Franz Ferdinand paced up and down in his palaces and castles waiting impatiently for the death of the ever more ancient emperor, his hated uncle Franz Joseph I. As we all know, his wait was in vain. Of this summer’s great anniversary commemorations of World War I, the most important will be those marking the assassination on June 28, 1914 of Franz Ferdinand, the “original sin” from which all the terrible subsequent events followed.
