A Mask the Color of the Sky
Winner of the International Prize for Arabic Fiction A bold, psychologically rich novel of identity, exile, and resistance from one of Palestine’s most vital literary voices—written entirely from behind bars. Nur, a young Palestinian refugee from a camp near Ramallah, is often mistaken for an Ashkenazi Jew. Fluent in Hebrew and with a degree in archaeology, he dreams of freedom beyond the fences of the camp—and of writing a novel about Mary Magdalene based on the Gnostic Gospels.
Fathers and Fugitives: When a Book Travels North in a New Language
I have just made my debut in the U.S. with my novel Fathers and Fugitives, a book that garnered praise and won prizes in South Africa, but has, until recently, been unknown to readers in America, as am I as a writer. It’s the glue that holds everything together.

S J Naudé’s collection of short stories appeared in an Afrikaans language version (Alfabet van die Voëls, Umuzi) in 2011, and when I received it I read it straightaway, and straight through.
10 of the most compelling local books of the year
Of the many recent books about apartheid spies and their nefarious dealings, this is the best written and researched account of the life and times of a man who still walks among us thanks to the TRC and remains, as he was when he worked for his apartheid bosses, a truly unlikeable, unrepentant and despicable specimen. Fezekile Kuzwayo was vilified and hounded by the supporters of Jacob Zuma when she accused him of rape in 2009.
