For the first time in decades, the Republican Party has removed all pro-life language from the party platform. Trump has also called for less free-trade, more government regulation, and he is indifferent about Russian aggression in Europe. At the same time, the Democratic Party is embracing patriotism, law and order, tax cuts, and retreating from its more progressive social and environmental policies. What's happening?

by Skye Jethani Note: This is the first in a series of reflections Skye is writing about his recent trip to Israel/Palestine. Last week, the former U.N. ambassador and Republican presidential candidate, Nikki Haley, visited Israel. She was photographed writing "Finish Them" on an artillery shell just hours after the Israel Defense Forces used similar American-made weapons to bomb a refugee camp in Gaza killing 45 Palestinians including innocent women and children.
What does the Bible say about marriage in heaven?
Bride and groom on the beach. By Анна Ковальчук/stock.adobe.com A woman in the UK married her terminally ill fiancé in the hospital, then he died thirty-four hours later. She called her wedding “the best day of my life,’ but noted, “I didn’t know it would be my last with him.” None of us who are married can know if this is our last day with our spouse. When that day comes, what then? Will we be married to them in heaven? Those of us whose parents are with the Lord wonder the same thing about them.

Does Your View of Heaven Match Jesus'?
The first clue that Jesus’s map of heaven is different from ours is found in the word itself. The Hebrew word for “heaven” in the Old Testament is shamayim, and the Greek word in the New Testament is ouranos. Both words are plural and are usually accompanied by a definite article.

Fear Is the Enemy of Gratitude
Skye Jethani The most repeated commands in the Bible are not warnings or restrictions. They are calls to “praise the Lord” and “do not be afraid.” These commands take different forms such as “give thanks,” “rejoice,” and “fear not” throughout Scripture, but the emphasis remains the same ‒ God’s desire is for us to be full of joy and gratitude, but He knows that fear is always lurking and ready to hijack our souls. Fear is the enemy of gratitude.

What If Jesus Was Serious about the Church?
Publisher Description Researchers have uncovered the following three trends: First, distrust of institutions, including the church, is at an all-time high. Second, young people raised in the church are leaving at alarming rates and not returning. Third, loneliness and social isolation are at pandemic levels. What’s the connection? It appears that an entire generation is starving for the very thing the church is called to provide but has chosen to look for it elsewhere. Why is this happening?

Born from the ideals of free market capitalism and designed to thrive in a consumer society, these massive companies feed us, clothe us, educate us, entertain us, heal us, and increasingly, some would argue, they even govern us. Few doubt the dominance and effectiveness of corporations.

Skye Jethani on Pastors Creating “Mini Me” Parishioners
Over the years, dinnertime conversations at our house have had a recurring theme. When pastors do a series of teachings on discovering and using your spiritual gifts, the conclusion is often self-serving, inasmuch as the deployment of those gifts always involves serving the church’s own agenda, its own programs, and activities limited to its own physical building.
You Are Not Defined by Desires
Jesus had been fasting in the desert for 40 days. He was understandably hungry, so the enemy presented to Him a very practical and relevant idea. “If You are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread” (Luke 4:3 NAS). The enemy was not saying that Jesus should prove His identity as God’s Son by turning stone into bread, although that is often how we misread the story. The enemy was saying, “If You are God’s Son then You have every right to satisfy Your desires.

1/ Let’s talk about conspiracy theories. Not any specific one, but their overall popularity right now particularly among Christians. First, conspiracy theories happen because our minds are hardwired to see patterns & reject randomness. We want to make a narrative out of the world 2/ ...where a series of cause-and-effect events create a pattern of meaning. Our minds do not want to believe in random, chaotic, unrelated occurrences. Therefore, when no obvious cause is evident we will invent one.

Lent: Preparing Our Garden for Growth
Lent is a time to remove obstacles and dedicate ourselves anew to growing in Christ. From the editor Despite its rich history in the church, many of us don't observe Lent. Maybe it's time to reconsider. As Skye points out in his sermon, this special 40-day period before Easter is a unique time for us to take inventory of our lives, commune more intimately with God, and clear out those things that may distract us from our commitment to him.
