Carolina Wolf Spider - behavior question
December 27, 2025, 9:50pm 1 So, I’m dealing with an overly friendly wolf spider. She is huge, would almost fill my palm if you include the legs. Body length a little over an inch, I guess, and very chonky. She is constantly trying to cozy up to me at night. To the point that I’m now having dreams that she’s one of my dogs reincarnated. She will just sort of lay alongside my arm on on the chair, or beside my leg. Or I’ll go to move and find her darting from between the folds of the blanket.
Another 'is this a scam' request
May 7, 2025, 9:56pm 1 A coworker of mine, whose husband has recently passed, is getting a lot of this type of stuff in the mail. She wasn’t that involved in her husband’s affairs so has no idea if these things are valid or not. To me it smells very scammy, however, Malia Cohen is a real person. What say the teeming masses? Raising sons shouldn't be and isn't just the mother's job
May 16, 2024, 9:00pm 1 Kinda telling that you state that YOU raised your son to be a decent person and that your husband was his mother’s job. Where was his dad and your husband in all this, shouldn’t they have been taking on a greater role in socializing a boy? That’s rather my point–women are automatically assumed to be the ones responsible for socializing kids and the ones who get the blame if the kid turns out wrong. How come dad doesn’t rate the opprobrium for poorly socialized boys?
Helena has passed on
Per her friend Cow Princess, posted on the Raffe, longtime member of both these boards Helena (Helena330 here) has died. This was not unexpected, as she had a recurrence of cancer and has been in hospice care for a while now. She had to put her kitteh Twig down recently due to illness and I think that took a lot out of her. She was a kind and sweet soul and she will be sorely missed. Where is a safe place to order seeds?
I want to order Piel de Sapo (aka Christmas or Santa Claus Melon) seeds. I usually buy seeds at a local nursery or order them from Burpee but I’ve not been able to find them. I’m concerned about ordering from Amazon, I’ve been hearing sketchy things about their seeds nowadays. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Wildfires on Maui [2023-08-10]
My wife told me about this right before I fell asleep last night. Checking the news this morning, wow. The entire town of Lahaina is basically reduced to ashes. My wife was showing me a picture and saying “I remember walking down that street.” I said “Yeah, that’s where I bought my Hawaiian shirt” (which I’m wearing today).
Windows update changes user files
This is embarrassing, because an am an IT guy. After Windows update, my local account was like new; just created, all saved files, bookmarks, passwords were gone. Thunderbird had no account associated with it. Upon a Google search, I found that four restarts in a row would fix an account where the user name had been changed. It worked. After four restarts in a row, everything was back.
Dingo vs human
Assuming that all combatants are sufficiently motivated for an actual fight to the death (relatively rare in nature; most creatures will know when they’re beat and surrender or retreat as appropriate), and assuming that you mean which would be more likely to win, as opposed to which fights the human can win with sufficient luck… Generally, animal-vs-animal fights come down to a simple question of mass. A human significantly outmasses a dingo, so one on one, the human has the edge.
Anybody watching Tacoma FD?
It’s sitcom about a fire station in Tacoma WA starring Broken Lizard’s Steve Lemme and Kevin Heffernan. I think it’s pretty funny, straight in your face humor with a decent cast and creatives ideas. One of the funniest episodes featured a signer for the deaf having to translate the contents lost in a fire at a sex shop (see spoilered link below). The most recent episode featured guest star Joe “Joey Pants” Pantoliano.
Since We're Binge Watching (Mad Men Question/Discussion)
1 I am rewatching Mad Men and something struck me. I just started Season 4 so this may not bear out. When Don was married to Betty, he never cheated on her with a blonde…they were all brunettes or redheads. Now that he’s divorced his first serious “date” (meaning they don’t immediately end up in bed) is with a blonde. I know he marries Meghan, but I can’t remember if he cheats on her (knowing Don, most likely) or he stays away from brunettes during that marriage.
B-52s fans: Can Fred Schneider sing?
I’m not a huge fan of the B-52s, but am familiar with their most popular hits (Love Shack, Rock Lobster, etc.). One thing that’s immediately striking about the music is Fred Schneider’s vocals. In contrast to the band’s two female vocal leads, Schneider’s vocals are much closer to speaking than singing. I suppose the technical term for this is sprechgesang.
Trucks hauling "suicide coils."
I have a friend who’s an OTR trucker. He said he will haul any freight except “suicide coils.” According to him, “suicide coils” are large coils of steel that are rolled onto (and then secured to) a flatbed truck. Like this, this, and this. He said that, if he were to get into a wreck, there’s a good chance the coils will break free from their restraints, roll to the cab, and crush him to death. I’m not an ME or physicists, but I can certainly understand how this could happen.
