To assess the self-organized pattern organization of cortical actin, we used a combination of experiments and computational analysis. We first simulated the distributions of F-actin orientations and densities within actin vortices, stars and asters. Qualitative analysis of the simulated distributions allowed us to identify and differentiate these actin patterns from randomly generated F-actin networks in the experiments.
