Sofia Axelrod, PhD, is a neuroscientist, sleep consultant, author of “How Babies Sleep” and founder of Kulala. Dr. Axelrod is a sleep researcher in the laboratory of Michael W. Young, the winner of the 2017 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. When she became pregnant with her first child, Dr. Axelrod, a lifelong insomniac, feared she would never sleep again. After the birth of her first baby, she naturally applied her expert knowledge to baby’s sleep.
By: Dr. Sofia Axelrod, PhD When I tell people I’m a chronobiologist, they may understandably be confused. All this means is, I’m a scientist who studies the effects of biological rhythms on living things. This includes, most crucially, circadian rhythm, which are the processes our bodies follow over a 24-hour cycle. People understand much better when I tell them that I’m essentially a sleep scientist. I’m also a mother of two.
Abstract Time-restricted feeding/eating (TRF/TRE) - limiting not the amount of food but the daily time window of food intake - is a dietary intervention that has been shown to improve health markers in model organisms and humans, but whether these benefits translate into positive effects on aging and longevity is not clear. We demonstrate here that TRF robustly prolongs lifespan in the short-lived genetically tractable model organism Drosophila melanogaster.
